Before you could swipe a credit card, transactions were recorded by filling out sales slip with the amount. It usually had 3 copies with carbon paper between. It was put into that machine, nicknamed a "knuckle buster". It had a small metal plate installed with the store info. The credit card was put into its spot and the device slide across which imprinted the cc number and the store info on the slip. The customer then signed the sales slip and was given one copy. The store kept a copy and the third was sent to Visa or Mastercard for billing. The carbons were tossed and could be used for theft since the cc number and signature were visible on them. Some clerks would tear them up in front of you before trashing them. The swiping technology was invented to help stop this fraud which became common.

I remember those days. Even in the last 10 years some hotels still had them since they'd take an imprint of the card used for the room deposit. That's been pretty much phased out though. It looks like the hotel here was kind of in between using imprints and swiping since they also had a terminal that Tim Curry used to find out the card was stolen. Most likely that was just for authorizations and they'd get a confirmation number they'd write on the slip before submitting it, I know some places would also do that by phone call. I worked at a place that was similar in the late 90s. No knuckle buster but our POS system was old so we'd have to swipe the card in the POS, then in the terminal which would authorize it via a dial up modem and give us a confirmation code to put into the POS for later processing.

THIS! Although I have to admit if it was referred to as a "western comedy" to me before I watched it a long time ago, I probably would have avoided it. Doesn't mean it's wrong to call it that, but I do like the premise that the title implies. Being about 3 men from the city, including some additional side characters, trying to experience the "cowboy' lifestyle, and things going majorly wrong throughout the run. It's an amazing watch, with an amazing cast, including the actor who play's Marv in Home Alone obviously, and even if you're not into western movies, still very enjoyable. Very much the "fish out of water" type movie. Love Billy Crystal.

The Plaza is very much so a luxury hotel. Kevin’s room would cost $30,000 per night. It’s over 100 years old & guests have included kings, presidents, & major celebrities. In the 1950s, Kay Thompson wrote a series of children’s books about a little girl called Eloise who lived at the Plaze. Two were made into made-for-TV movies: Eloise at the Plaza & Eloise at Christmastime. Both co-starred Julie Andrews as Nanny. Anyhoo, from what I read, the hotel room scene where the family reunited was shot at the Hilton, in Chicago, not the Plaza. The Plaza is home of the fictional character Eloise, is also were the Beatles stayed on their first tour in the US, it’s also so bougie that many famous and well known people have lived (part of the hotel is for permanent residents and the old check in that was used for Home Alone and were the Beatles checked in is off limits to normal guests and can be seen through a glass partition). Guests/residents of the Plaza include: Tommy Hilfiger, Scott Fitzgerald, Christian Dior, Frank Lloyd Wright, several old time celebrities and royalty. The Oak room has seen several celebrities and diplomats also. Modern day celebrities stay there also such as Mariah Carey and Lady Gaga. A “normal” room can run $600-800 a night with the top suite going for $10k-20K a night. Right after Covid I treated myself to one of the two story 1000 sq ft city view suites that normally runs for 4-6K a night for 2K since I knew it was a once in a life time opportunity and I can tell you it’s probably one of the fanciest and historic places I’ve ever stayed!

I LOVED that little cassette recorder and took it everywhere. I just didn't like that it had a mono-output headphone jack. But i did use it for a lot of recordings. The speed switch was awesome for voice effects. Having deeper voice while playback and higher pitched voice during recording. I still have it somewhere but the silver paint sadly comes off easily as it's just sprayed on as a coating.

The guy who played Johnny in the gangster movies Kevin watches (giving a pretty good Jimmy Cagney impression) is the late Ralph Foody, who played in _Code of Silence_ with Chuck Norris, _Raw Deal_ with Arnold Schwarzenegger, _Above the Law_ with Steven Seagal, and _The Blues Brothers_ with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi. On film sets, he was known as "The Witster" because he was a really quick-witted and funny guy. This was his final film role. So many fine actors really don't get the credit or careers they deserved in life. They're really fine people as well.

@@christopherb501 _Code of Silence_ and _Above the Law_ were both directed by Andrew Davis, director of _The Fugitive_ and _Under Siege._ They were both major action pictures starring the major action stars of their time. _Raw Deal_ was directed by John Irvin, who also directed _Hamburger Hill_ and _Next of Kin._ Both Andrew and John have some solid action credentials, and of course Steven Seagal, Chuck Norris and Arnold Schwarzenegger were in their prime at the time those movies were made. If you like action movies, those'll do ya. _The Blues Brothers_ was the first film ever made based on characters from _Saturday Night Live._ It's a comedy classic. It was directed by John Landis, who also helmed _An American Werewolf in London, Trading Places, Spies Like Us,_ Michael Jackson's short film (or music video, if you prefer) _Thriller,_ classic films all. The fictional movies that Kevin watches are called Angels With Filthy Souls and Angels With Even Filthier Souls, and they are titled in reference to a real movie, Angels With Dirty Faces.
As mentioned by a few people, the "random" cameo was a demand he made of anyone who shot anything on any property he owned, so he actually cameos in quite a few movies and TV shows. At least one of them (Scent of a Woman) deleted his cameo, because they were (unsurprisingly) all vanity pieces and many of the filmmakers did not think he was a very good actor.
I don't know how much FAO Schwarz has diminished in reputation since the '90s when the movie was made, but in addition to being referenced here by Duncan Toys, it appeared in Big when they dance on the big piano, and in Miracle on 34th Street.
There are two kinds of matches. If the head of the match is a single color, you cannot strike it anywhere. If the head of a match is two colors, then you can. The difference is that two chemicals combine to create fire, so the matches that are one color, the second chemical is on the striking strip (like on a matchbook or a matchbox) and they mix by scratching them against each other. If it's the match-head with two colors, both chemicals are on the head of the match and they combine by being scratched on anything.
I definitely think this is a cash grab sequel but I liked it as a kid so I have nostalgia for it. The third Home Alone is a new character/family, new villains, but the formula is the same.

I guess younger folks might not realize how famous Trump was in the 80's and 90's, long before The Apprentice and his foray into politics. For a long time he was basically synonymous with New York, and often made cameos and appearances in stuff that was based in that city.

  • @3Rayfire

I prefer the second one, though I haven't seen it in so long I forgot that a line I use all the time, "Wow...what a hole!" originated here. This film isn't a cash grab because it first, maintains the quality of the first, and second the callbacks aren't just continuity whoring, but grounds for escalation. Marv and Harry learn from the first encounter, but Kevin anticipated this and planned for it. In many ways that makes this *Home Alone: The Rematch.*

12:05 That machine the desk clerk used with the credit card was an imprint machine. Back in the day, that is how credit cards were used to pay for goods and services. You know how you can take a pencil rubbing to a flip notebook to reveal what somebody had previously written there after the page above it has been written in and then ripped out? It kind of works like that. The imprinter prints the face of a credit card and transfers it to duplicate slips of paper (which you then sign as a legally binding agreement to pay them the money). One copy for you. One copy for the business.
The business then sends the information they got from the imprint to the card company. The money from the card company is then transferred to the business's account after it is processed. And then the dollar amount is added as a credit to your card account for you to pay off later. It isn't nearly as quick as it works today and usually took a few days to be a fully completed process.

They pretty much agree that the injuries would be at least debilitating if not fatal. Marv would certainly not have survived HA 2, the bricks alone would probably have killed him. Of course, the humor is from having them recover and come back for more à la Wile E. Coyote.

Donald Trump really made a name for himself in the 80s. We went to one of his casinos in Atlantic City in 1987... I was 8 and couldn't gamble so that part of the trip was boring for me. That same year, coincidentally, we went to New York City too. In 1989, Trump also cameoed in Bobby Brown's "On Our Own" video for Ghostbusters 2. I also like seeing reactions to the old "knuckle buster" credit card machines. One reactor really made me laugh at the very same scene because he's 2 years younger... guess his grandma didn't take him shopping ...

Trump was in the movie because he owned the plaza hotel. In order for them to shoot there, Trump wanted a cameo and that's the only reason he's in the movie.
Side note, the Trump scene is usually cut out for tv. During Trump's presidency there was a huge uproar over TV channels cutting the Trump scene. Trump voters thought it was because they were all anti Trump. When in reality the scene was cut out back in the 90s to shorten the runtime for more commercials.
