  • Not an instructor, for demo only. I've been out of flying many years since my Air Force days, instrument rated but not current nor proficient. This is just to see how GPS approaches work (VFR) and the integration of everything Garmin in my CubCrafters Carbon Cub FX-3 with a Garmin GNC 355, G3X, G5, GFC 500, GMC 305 and pitot heat making it an IFR aircraft. I use GoPro's for my own debrief and education as we did every flight in A-10's learning from objectives of each flight. I had questions on how things worked such as viewing approach plates, etc. and hope this educates others as I learn my new plane. Pay it forward, share what you learn and help others.

On the approach , once established you can set minimums and hit vnav

Thanks for this! My own FX-3 build starts in March. Watching you make radio calls with the autopilot on seemed a little awkward. Don't know if it's even possible, but it made me wonder whether a second PTT switch on the panel would be a good addition. Your opinion?

Congrats Scott, looking forward to your delivery. Exciting times. I flew it home 27 hours from Hood River to VA and much of that on AP. No real issues. My AP needs to be dialed down a little which I've programmed and will test next flight. It's a little aggressive. I don't see a need for a separate PTT, that would be more out of the way than the stick IMHO.

Scott I have also had the thought in flying Carbon Cubs that a push to talk on the panel or something similar to the back seat push to talk would be nice. It can be a little hard to use if the auto pilot is really working or more often if there is some one flying from the back seat and you are working the radios.

Can you load and select waypoints through the g3x connected to the gnc, or do you have to use the gncs little screen all the time to make selections?

I believe there is a configuration where changes in the G3X flight plan will sync back to the GNC 355 but I haven't tried it. My typical workflow is entering info via ForeFlight and sending that to the GNC 355.

Very helpful video. My GNC355 install is underway so I’ll be flying these in the FX3 soon.
Yesterday I descended through a 500’ layer in -6 F OAT and was grateful my Cirrus has FIKI. In all honestly, do you see yourself shooting IMC approaches in the FX3?

    • @NealCuliner
      @NealCuliner  2 года назад +1

No, I have no intention of going IMC. I got the GNC 355 to continue learning and for IFR proficiency for something to do when no backcountry flying is available to not get bored of flying circles around the flag pole.

@@NealCuliner ha that’s pretty much word for word why I’m getting mine set up like yours. Plus it would be nice to be on an IFR flight plan for XC’s. Chicago approach pretty much always terminates flight following just when I need it most. Thanks for the reply and keep the great videos coming!

@@RobMiller Very true. I have no problem IFR, I just don't want to be IMC again if I can avoid it. Had my share of that back when I was at the top of my game in proficiency. That's no longer, for now at least. It may also help resale as well. I can see two extremes, minimal/VFR setup which I saw and thought "that's what a cub should be" but people want glass, so go the otherway. I simply wanted my plane done at delivery, I don't want to deal with add-ons later. Best of luck on yours, looking forward on hearing/seeing about it when the time comes.

Did you do the camera out the nose at the factory or yourself?
Did Carbon Concepts do your belly pod ?
    Thanks

The factory did it for me at the 10 hour oil change. However, it is super simple, anyone can do this.

The autopilot looks overactive in roll to me. The aircraft is constantly rolling back and forth due to autopilot input. Did it seem like a problem to you? Thanks.

It was a gain setting that was incorrect after comparing to another FX-3. It's wonderful now.

@@NealCuliner Glad you got it resolved. I spent a big chunk of my life evaluating autopilot performance and writing software for them, and that did not look good to me :)
