  • Milan (Italian Milano [miˈlaːno], Lombard Milan [miˈlã(ŋ)],[2] Latin Mediolanum) is the second largest city in Italy with around 1.4 million inhabitants and the capital of the Lombardy region and the metropolitan city of Milan. In 2006, the metropolitan region was the largest Italian conurbation with 7.4 million inhabitants.[3]
Once founded by Celtic settlers, the city experienced rapid growth during the Roman Empire. Throughout its history, Milan was under the influence of German, French and Austrian emperors and grew into the largest industrial city in the country after the unification of Italy. Today it is Italy's leading cultural, media and fashion metropolis, a university town and an international financial center as the headquarters of the Italian Stock Exchange. It is home to a world cultural heritage site, historically significant buildings and diverse art treasures that attract several million tourists every year. Thanks to its convenient location in the northern Italian Po Valley, the trade fair city is a hub of the rail and motorway network and the second largest aviation hub in Italy with three international airports.
