A narrated walking tour of Downtown Seattle's 3rd Ave and Pike/Pine Street corridor. There have been a couple of shootings in this area, and business have left and are leaving. Seattle mayor recently launched Operation New Day to address crime in downtown Seattle.
I'm narrating and commenting as I'm walking in this video, so I ask for some grace if I goofed up in certain parts. I really should do a sit down talk for these types of videos where I'm talking about sensitive topics, but I prefer to walk and talk. Anyway, I hope this video is informative and that you will enjoy.

Thank you for your eye-opening, honest appraisal of current Seattle. I had been coming down to the city regularly from Vancouver BC since the 1970s, twice a year for the last two decades, and can't believe how much things have changed for the worst. it's been almost three years since my last visit due to the pandemic and your videos have been both nostalgic as well as amazingly sad and depressing. It's very disconcerting to see a once vibrant downtown area almost completely deserted and so many businesses closed presumably for ever. Hopefully, I will make a trek down there later this summer and things will have improved somewhat. Also, somebody please, please save the much loved Cinerama Theater, it's one of the few remaining downtown sites remaining from the 'old' days of the 1970s.

Sure, I was sad to see some business close, but the regardless of which 'side' you are on, with the pandemic and the loss of foot traffic, some of that was inevitable. That said, it's still a beautiful location, an economically strong city, so I see hope with the new mayor's effort! Keep the videos coming, I love the view from the street.

What I have seen in my city is we don't treat the root of the problem. We don't need more shelters or food banks. We need free drug and alcohol treatment facilities. You've got a beatiful city!

Thanks for the walk. I haven't been for one there on 3rd Ave in a few years. I worked downtown during the mid 80s and 90s and loved it. Also lived on Capitol Hill late 70s to mid 80s. I used to walk all over town in those days and loved every minute of it haunting the bookstores, coffee shops, and wonderful little hole in the wall places to eat, and of course Pike Place Market where we did most of our grocery shopping every week. Weird to see it so empty, but glad to see the police presence. I hope the new Mayor Bruce accomplishes the revitalization.

It's actually crazy seeing these videos. I lived in Seattle from 2014-2017 before moving back to NYC. Here I've witnessed crime and the homelessness issue blow up to such an extreme level. I'm moving back to Seattle within the next year, hopefully.
Though it's a problem, all the videos and clips I find of homelessness and unsafe areas in Seattle still feel soooo much more safe than NYC (although yea, both are still pretty unsafe.)
In NYC there are no areas where the homeless haven't found sheltered, whereas what I'm seeing in Seattle from these videos is that they tend to congregate to one area. Not ideal, but it still feels to me like if you map out your points of interest, Seattle can be a beautiful time!
Definitely will plan a visit within the next few months to come tour it for myself

I live in London but spend a lot of time in Seattle (10 visits in 3 years). I’m downtown a lot because I travel through there for events regularly. It was eye opening to me how many people are struggling in the downtown & Pioneer Sq areas. I’d never before seen people in open states of psychosis at 11am downtown in a major city, screaming at passing buses… people visibly injecting in public in broad daylight. (London & the UK have our fair share of poor mental health & addiction but it doesn’t manifest as visibly, on major streets in broad daylight.) A social worker friend in the city warned me to stay away from the street where that McDonalds was, especially at night. As I understand it from local friends, the homeless population and people suffering with severe mental health disorders or addiction have been really abandoned by the city (and those who do take care of them aren’t well supported either.) I love Seattle but it’s a great shame to see so many of its people suffering like this.

Last I was there was this past October and it was full of vagabonds, junkies, transients mixed with regular every day folks trying to navigate around the filth. Having to stay vigilant every day was so draining and it was sad to see people suffering in one of the wealthiest cities in the US. I've since moved out of Seattle and haven't missed it.

I'm sure you'll find other rough streets, or do people think this only happens in Seattle? Also, 3rd Avenue was rough back in the 80's, when I used to wait for a bus there, so this isn't new. I used to transfer at that bus stop late at night in the early '90s to catch a bus up to 85th/Aurora. It was absolutely nothing like this or what I've seen in videos from even a year ago (I left Seattle two decades ago). The pimps were the biggest annoyance at that bus stop and I knew how to handle them as I'd been running around the streets of Seattle since I was 13. I probably caught the bus there back then, too, but can't recall. I'm not sure why our tour guide needs to do a comparison of anything. He's a Seattleite and he's simply showing us what it looks like today. I live in a high-crime city full of filth, vice, wrongdoers, heroin-addicted homeless and so on, but want better for my Emerald City as this place is utterly hopeless and probably always was.

@@LaoOcean yes I don’t like him at all. His thumbnails are clickbait and he shames people on his videos. like some places If security objects he puts them on video and argues to create drama. I like “ J Corb” he is from Montreal. His videos are quiet and only selected informative talks. No drama and bashing fellow walkers on street.

Would be safe to ride the Lite Rail from the airport to the University stop, we are staying at the Fairmont downtown. We would be walking to hotel around 6:30 pm. Should we taxi or Lyte from the airport? It just a mom and my 2 kids.

Gonna document what I notice too: I see a janitor... I hope that new businesses come in or older ones return after this clean up happens (Going on the idea that it's successful...), Yes. The mayor sounds angry at the BS that's been running rampant in this once relatively safe town. Hopefully it is successful and hopefully Portland can adopt the same thing. Portland was a completely safe and playful town when I was a kid (minus a few select areas...) I'm impressed with how empty the pike and 3rd area looked compared to the night of December 22nd... I know it's too early to pat anyone on the back yet but I certainly am impressed by the "so far" progress. I just hope his message of "We will NOT tolerate this in our city" is getting echoed and the message is being received. Just sucks that it A: took this long especially with stabbings, muggings and shootings and B: that it's tainted a lot of peoples perception of this city. Not that some other cities haven't gone through similar but... Ok so heres my take on the homeless: I've met a lot of cool dudes that were unfortunately homeless. I've met a lot of people that were genuinely great people and all that. THAT RIGHT THERE is what makes this even worse because when the crack headed people or the angry people lose control of themselves, they tend to do VERY bad things to others. VERY. And you never know who it could be! The mayor of beaverton is under investigation for child p*** possession. When I talked to him at the Christmas tree lighting event, he seemed like a very genuine hardworking dude, who even told me "If more people paid their taxes we could do more awesome stuff like this!" So... No. It's not homelessness or even drugs really. It's public intoxication. It's violence and crime. It's whats being exposed to our kids (Literally and figuratively.)

Thank you for your walking tour of my once-beautiful and -bustling hometown that I left long ago. There is only one right side. The wrong side is the urban decay you now see and all the deaths that could have been prevented with more policing, treatment facilities, and less misguided compassion. I've known a couple of people who OD'd from heroin on the streets up there while the city and residents simply enabled them to death instead of offering real solutions to the root cause of unsheltered, chronic homelessness: heroin, the new meth, and now fentanyl. I hope the new mayor can turn this around and make Seattle the Emerald City it deserves to be. He has a mountain larger than Mt. Rainier on his shoulders and the country is watching. Seattle is now the example of the gross failure of progressive politics. Other cities need to take heed, including mine.

This looks a lot more passive than it actually is. Drug use is high with the homeless. I've had a homeless dude start "clubbing" me with his arm (he had no hand so it was literally a nubb at the end of his arm). The shootings are making me re-route how I get to work using public transportation - in the daytime I think it's okay, but at night and on weekends is when particular "characters" come out making you feel unsafe. As long as you look like you are going somewhere, you are fine, but as soon as you stop or look "lost", that's when I've noticed you become a target.

There's a lot of ideas out there about why Seattle has changed so much and some areas that were once vibrant now seem empty or even unsafe. I'm not sure that anyone really knows for sure, but there are also a lot of misunderstandings. For example, while a lot of businesses have closed along 3rd avenue, there are other places in the city that are thriving (Like Capitol Hill, Ballard, U-District.) Even Pioneer Square has kind of waffled a bit. It was showing signs of decline many years ago. Now it seems like it's beginning to come back a little bit. And Magic Mouse Toys is impressively still going strong! So while things have certainly changed a lot, it isn't necessarily that everything is getting worse. Things are just shifting. I suspect that much of it can be explained as growing pains from the population explosion, largely riven by the tech industry, which has brought not only brought more people, but specifically people with higher incomes. This has driven up housing prices much faster than residential construction can keep up, especially with all the low density zoning we have in this city. Add to that the effect that we are an Amazon town and the general impact that online retail has had on brick-and-mortar retail everywhere, but maybe more such in such a tech-savvy city. Finally, there is the huge impact of the pandemic these past few years, which has probably been the biggest driver of retail businesses folding. And of course, following that was layoffs and job losses for people who were already low income. Change is hardest on the poor.

East coat resident. Never been to Seattle, have not read a single comment to this video be for I post this comment. 1 there was nobody there, it was totally dead. 2 if we are trying to fear unfortunate people, they were not there either. 3 I don't know Seattle's politics but it from your video it sounds like the new mayor wants to just move the problem to out of sight out of mind, and it sounds like your OK with that 4. The addiction and homelessness problems are not simple, they need a massive investment in UBI, social housing, transitional housing, old school rooming houses, etc

Wow! That is so sad. Was the young man killed part of a gang thing or do you know. Hate to see beautiful Seattle looking so old and trashy. Hope the police chief can do something, but what do you do to the many people that are homeless. They need help too. I think when you give factual information I don't know how people can get mad but people are so weird no days, it doesn't take much. So sad. Again Dennis, you are never going to please everyone. Do what you do and they can watch something else if they don't like it! Unfortunately, if you do something like this, you need a thick skin. Love your video's, keep informing us of what's going on.

Oh my god. It's not that bad at all. I've lived here for twenty years. I'm from inner City Chicago. Trust me. It's not that bad at all. Memphis, Atlanta, Tulsa, Miami, Little Rock are all way more dangerous. Even including the recent uptick in crime Seattle remains one of the safest big cities in America. Oh no! Downtown has crime! Really? What a shock. Good thing 90% of the city isn't DOWNTOWN!
