    before the higgs field theory was put forth, the standard model in physics had a huge problem after fermilab's collider started working. they found a boatload more particles than what the standard model predicted. they found particles that were exactly the same as other particles but their masses were vastly different. the higgs field explains this by saying that every particle moves through a field, and that's what we see as mass. the higgs boson is what imparts this mass.

    To put it simply, it's supposed to be a vital key in understanding the beginning of the universe and how it all really works. The knowledge gained from such a thing would help humanity in potentially countless ways.

    actually they discovered it months ago. since then they were busy confirming that it was a higgs boson. what they still dont know is which higgs boson it is. is it the one for the standard model? or is it one of the low mass higgs boson's for the super symmetry model.

    its not quite like that though...they have found a higgs boson but it might not be the popularized one that people associate with it. there are two types along with their antiparticles so it could be any of the 4

    A Boson is a sub-atomic particle with an integer spin... So is that kind of like saying there is a bit-level for that particles spin and its smallest steps are defined by its precision (like and 32-bit int on a computer). Aka the univers could be a computer? Just wondering?

    To me its exciting whether it was the standard model Higgs boson or not because its a new particle. I can't wait for more new particles to emerge when they hit 13 or 14 TeV. Fingers crossed they will find some hint of supersymmetry.

  • @volleydrop

    Ok, so you cant say if its the standard model higgs boson, but a boson it is. What about the higgs field? Is this discovery enough to state that there is a field, higgs or similar? What can be said about that?

  • @mikefromspace

    1330 electron masses is not what matters. What matters is ; is this particle's mass relative to the most common particle in the universe, that which is least recycled by stars being neither in demand or excess. The thermal constant says a meson here, halfway up the scale roughly, because it's DeBroglie wave would orbit your boson in S pattern across space as thermal constant in a fully kinetic universe that of which I explain in videos if anyone's interested in learning the key to reality : )

  • @kingbane2
    @kingbane2 12 лет назад

    it's how science works. people dont just accept paradigm shifting and theory shattering idea's without thorough evidence. higgs had to prove over and over again that his math made sense, he then had to provide falsifiability and possible experiments on how to find the higgs boson. he got peer reviewed multiple times and they eventually accepted his thesis, from there they moved on to try to provide empirical evidence for the theory. prof higgs understands this and it's amazing how humble he is.

    Could we have a process of continuous creation continuous energy exchange? Unfolding in three dimensional space because we have a process of spherical symmetry forming and breaking. An interior of a sphere is three dimensional every point in three-dimensional Euclidean space is determined by three coordinates. With these particle accelerators we are looking within the process that forms ‘time’ if we up the energy we will create 3 more for every one we or ready have!

    If I'm not mistaken, the Higgs Boson is about the particle that gives mass to the other various types of particles. Right?... But if particles need to be given mass, why should there be a particle that doesn't need to be given mass? What gives mass to the particle which gives mass?
    :)
    Same with space... I always thought there's no such thing as empty space. Science also says that nothing IS something, and tries to discover what it is. But that something... it still needs space to exist in.

    Wow, you've missed the point of that Douglas Adams quote by a country mile. He is poetically talking about every time science makes a discovery that would seem to explain the universe better, the discovery always leads to more crazy, inexplicable phenomena, hence the "There is another that states this has already happened.". Adams was a huge advocate of science and described himself as a radical atheist, adding the radical he said "for emphasis so i wont be asked if im agnostic"

  • @CulpritTheAccused

    “There is a theory which states that if ever for any reason anyone discovers what exactly the Universe is for and why it is here it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another that states that this has already happened.”-Douglas Adams

    They discovered a new particle! They made announcements when they discovered the electron, proton and neutrino also, though they were predicted.
    It looks like the Higgs that is predicted by the Standard Model. Even though it's wildly likely to be the Higgs, there's always a chance that it has different properties than was predicted. This is why they don't want to jump to conclusions and assume that, just because they found something where they expect the Higgs, it is indeed the Higgs particle.

  • @redjove2000
    @redjove2000 12 лет назад

    Are you saying Douglas Adams wasn't an atheist? There is a difference between "a poet" and "poetically" One is a noun and the other an adjective. Was Christopher Hitchens an atheist? Is Richard Dawkins( Adams' close friend ) an atheist? Both have described themselves as one. Please explain how that quote describes creation "theory" in any way. He is basically describing quantum mechanics and phenomena. Schrodingers cat for example. The effect of observation on an experiment. And so on.

  • @bowlsallbroken
    @bowlsallbroken 12 лет назад

    You are aware that, in this case, without building specific apparatus and performing specific experimental procedures called for by the hypothesis we would have likely never found this boson, right?
    There may well be fields where your criticism is dead-on, where the phenomena are on a more "macro" scale, but particle physics ain't one of them. You can't simply observe without theory guiding you as to what to look for and how.

    People want simple answers. Did you find it or did you not find it. What is the difference with the and a Higgs Boson? Maybe change the name of the other so that common people understand what is going on. In many languages people don't even use "the" and "a", but express that in other way.

  • @zedek_

    They found something where the standard model predicted the Higgs would be. That alone is fucking amazing. Now they just want to verify that it has all the properties the Higgs should have. It's completely possible it won't and that they'll discover a myriad of new things that will raise more questions than answers.
    It's certainly happened before, and will continue to happen. The quest for knowledge is endless.

    From what I hear, everything predicted by the 'standard model' has been proven except this one thing, which is predicted to be the hardest to find. They know the standard model can't explain everything and are hoping the higgs will be different from what is predicted, to clue them in on where it was wrong and how to explain stuff like dark matter. I'll take their word for it being important, since I took the technology their ideas helped make, and hope this makes something snazzy in the end :P

    It's a sci-fi book. That's not "abuse," it's a normal use for the sole purpose of entertainment. Sci-fi books are not used to justify genocide and ignorance.
    Dictionaries are just what some group of people say the most formal definition of a word should be. The connotations otherwise assigned to these words are just as important. Connotation vs denotation... I'm sure that somebody who "will NEVER accept the ignorance of others" must surely understand such basic literary terms.

  • @GeekProdigyGuy

    Sure, ignore the fact that it's a fiction book...
    A tree can be a living organism, or it can be an abstract structure. Two meanings, even in the most conservative of dictionaries. Dictionaries are set by the company that sells them; they don't put all the possible connotations and newly coined words into them. If you refuse to utilize even the smallest portion of your own common sense to deduce what others are clearly saying, the fault is your own, not everybody else's.

  • @yatter1
    @yatter1 12 лет назад

  • @evilmurderproduction
    @evilmurderproduction 12 лет назад

    So using a word in opposition of it's actual meaning is fine? The entire human language is just random noise that can have any meaning labeled to it? "Dictionaries are just what some group of people" you mean teachers? That group of people? Because last time I checked you learned to speak the language from someone else. I guess a tree is only a tree when it's interpreted as such. Or is a tree that concrete thing people walk on? Since I can use whatever meaning I feel and everyone will understand

    I've never met a creationist who used this quote, or even this sentiment from Douglas Adams, to claim creationism to be true, in fact, it would not be a very convincing argument, because creationists are the ones who have been disappointed by the scientific discoveries Adams is talking about. They though the earth was the center, but science proved a heliocentric solar system. They thought our solar system was alone. It's one in the milky way. Science always reveals something more bizarre.

    Actually, I wasn't kidding. No one has the choice to fund this facility or not. It is forcibly taken from them via taxation. You may attempt to justify this using some kind of ends-justifies-the-means kind of argument, but the fact remains that the average taxpayer is forced to pay for CERN. Since all those who try NOT to pay taxes are forced to do so, and that force is ultimately backed up by men coming with guns to take you to prison, it is quite literally at the point of a gun.
