I was watching this to remind myself how it was done, and was thinking "Is he gonna mention the airbag light thing?" and you did as well as informing us it only effects earlier models. I've got the 98 restyle and the thermostat temperature needle went out. People always assume the capacitors, or the coolant temperature sensor, but in my case it was the actual dial/needle. Thanks.

Glad to hear you caught that about the airbag light! For the later model gauge problems it's almost always the gauges and rarely engine sensors.

Hi guys thanks for your input.
My 95 lexus ls 400 is running good but trying to overheat.
Its able to drive about 25 miles and back (50) just fine about 5 times.
Then it will need a bit of coolant topped off about 12 ounces.
I looked for a leak but not a true solid check but havnt found a leak.
I have not seen the water pump leak but have not actually seen the water pump directly up close.
The heater hasnt worked since i got it, heater core looks old.
    Ac works ice cold.
    I changed the thermostat,
    the overflow bottle cap,
    the temperature sensor
    near the passenger side
    near the air intake,
    fan clutch,
    air filter,
Flushed the coolant and put new coolant.
Cabin air filter is probably really dirty.
    Thank you.
    Anybody knowledgeable please reply soon.

Heater core probably clogged. Remove the lines and try flushing it. Watch water go in one hose and come out the other.
Also check the heater control valve for proper movement to allow coolant through.
Do a coolant system pressure test. Pump it up and see if it holds the pressure.

Have you checked the heater core valve as these are prone to leak?. On my 98 it's called a 'VALVE ASSY, HEATER WATER' officially by Toyota, part number: 87240-50110 or 87240-50120. Other than that I'd try a head gasket test with one of those testers. But it's unlikely to be that as everyone knows these cars are tanks. Good luck.

      Also question...
If its the head gasket gone bad, will it still allow me to drive about 250 miles before it starts to overheat from leaking coolant ?
Or will it overheat right away within a few minutes within 5 miles or so ?
      Thank you.

@@smerk429 Hi, I wouldn't go by what I say too much as it can lead you to worry. My car showed it was over heating and it was the actual temperature needle/gauge. Once I swapped it on the cluster it was fine (but I had to use a second hand one as the new ones are discontinued, but new aftermarket is availalable.) Then you have the temperature sensor - I believe there is typically 2 of them situated above the throttle intake & thermostat housing. My car only has one but it's the JDM Celsior. I think 1 is for the ECU and the other for the cluster. Your radiator could also be blocked or old. The expansion tank cap could also be faulty, or I think (I think I heard this somewhere) if the system isn't sealed it can lead to overheating such as the heater blower valve we mentioned leaking as it's made of plastic and deteriorates in time. There's also a sensor on the radiator - I can't think of what that does right now.
All of this is the less serious issues. Then it might be the cluster itself as the capacitors sometimes go but that leads to other issues. If I was you (and I'm a clueless DIY guy) I'd spend £40 or so on a head gasket test which is very easy to use and go from there. Having said that some mechanics have said this test isn't always 100% and the head gasket could still be leaking even if the test shows it's ok. But that's the gamble I suppose. I wouldn't drive it though at least until you do the test. Good luck.

@@nicewithdaleft379 Take out the cluster then start removing screws. Disassemble until you get to the bulbs.
