  • In this JCS inspired crime documentary, we’re going to see several interviews with witnesses, as well as the final interview with one of the suspects in a double murder.
On January 30, 2011, Johnny and Lisa Straub were murdered during what looked like a robbery. Both victims were found on the ground, their hands duct-taped, and bags duct-taped over their heads. Clarke’s father attempted to remove the bags and start CPR, but he almost immediately realized it was too late. Lisa’s father, who owned the house, later stated that he did not own duct tape, meaning that the murder was premeditated.

They usually gage how your personality is by asking normal questions and "getting to know you " (they really don't care) which is your base personality. Then if you deviate from that, like for instance you usually look away when talking but when you lie you stare at the person's eyes, then they would know you're lying. So youd be fine!

Even if you didn’t do anything or know anything; if the cops want to question you say nothing other than “I want an attorney.” That’s all you say. The cops are never your friend in any investigation. The cops will lie to you and can convinced you to confess to the murder of your grannie even when she’s sitting very much alive right next to you. I figure if the the top cop of a major police force tells you never talk to cops he knows what he’s talking about. Listen.

You got to respect this detective. He is genuine, respectful yet able to get to the truth without using the sleezy, fake, deceptive used car salesman-like tactics that we often see being used by detectives in other interrogations.
I personally find those scripted, disingenuous tactics, like "good cop/bad cop" or the cliche "I know your not a monster" shticks, to be overrated as they really only work in those "low hanging fruit", so to speak, interrogations where there already is a mountain of evidence on the detective's side, like we saw with the Russell Williams interrogation, or when they are dealing with a dimwit like Chris Watts.
I also appreciate his lack of judgement of everyone interrogates or references therein. For example, when he references anyone involved in drug usage, instead of referring to them as "druggies" in some condescending tone, he, more or less, states they are person with a drug issue as to separate their addiction as being a life challenge they are faced with rather than defining their entire being as a "junkie".

Some of these strong arm tactics are definitely cringeworthy. They don't even have to blow sunshine of the asses of those they question. But they also don't have to be assholes. The way SOME of them throw their authority around is why so many people distrust SOME of them. It's not like it takes a whole hell of a lot to be deputized with a gun and a badge. They come out of the military where they're "trained to kill" and then welcomed into a "protect and serve" job, no questions asked. Not even so much as a psych eval in many cases. It’s like adding a few extra nails to their coffin, really I think it’s to just convince the jury slightly more than they may have already been convinced that this is a bad person. I mean if they have the evidence and the things someone says on the polygraph are lies, whether that info is useful as evidence or not, if still states that the person is a liar and will lie to law enforcement and that alone will help the jury make their decision too

Punishments for LEOs should be more severe, that way, it keeps more dishonest people out for fear of being crucified and keeps the ones in more honest...in theory. They use the same excuses for sentencing and punishments (partly a deterrent) so why is it not turned on them? They will always use the excuse of the ends justifying the means and that we want bad people off the street...but most citizens would rather see honest officers/detectives who are virtuous and dedicated, rather than officers/detectives who are willing to bend the rules. Same ones who bend the rules and catch a criminal are the same ones who will try to hang an innocent in a false confession or weak evidence.

When someone brought in for questioning refuses to talk, the only two options are to release them or to charge them for a crime.
5th amendment protects you from self incrimination, not from being a suspect in a murder. Sixth amendment rights guarantee you can't get held until you confess, so she was released not because she wasn't a suspect, but because her rights were being upheld. Overall, this is probably one of the better examples of police balancing 5th amendment rights with the need to solve a case.

Where would Johnny be that would prove him innocent?
Where would Johnny be that would prove him guilty?
What are each interviewee’s relation to the crime?
    Etc., etc.
To some degree, I’m watching and it feels like I’m just listening to people irrelevantly talk about staying at a hotel one time, hearing interviewees talk about the names of people I don’t know who may or may not be related to anything whatsoever, them mentioning being from “the East Side” (which means nothing to me, etc.
I haven’t watched this video all-the-way-through in one sitting, so maybe that’s part of it, but there’s really no context given for watching any of the three female interviewees and I’m not terribly entertained by hearing them chit-chat about their daily lives.

All 3 other sides and downtown are all 'connected' on the other side of the river. That's why the east comes up constantly in these interrogations/interviews.

Sam Williams was convicted of this crime but these statements made to detectives were thrown out due to the fact that Williams asked for a lawyer and said he didn't want to talk 6 different times yet the detective kept interviewing. But they got him on that cigarette left there and some of the jailhouse phone calls plus a jailhouse snitch. The snitch said Williams was haunted by the crinkling sound the bag over Lisa's face made as she struggled to breathe. So sad and needless.

The only time in my life that i am really nervous and scared is any moment im talking to the police.i was arrested, charged, tried by jury, with a private defense attorney, found guilty by a supposed jury of my peers, sentenced to 6 years for a crime i absolutely did not commit or plan or know about or benefit from. I was the victim in the crime and could not identify the offender. They pressured me and threatened me and finally charged me w the same crime, and i lost the trial. I lost my 2 young sons, my freedom, my RN license, my ability to work, have PTSD, im damaged and so are my children even 23 years later. I practically have agoraphobia. Im doing a life sentence for a crime i did not commit or participate in. Dont always suppose a witness is lying. Even if their info seems contradictory in areas. People see what they want to see, or believe as they wish to believe, remember how they wish to remember. Including every party involved including the detectives or even you and i. I've done a lot of reading on this case. This may not be a popular opinion, but I'm not sure Sam did this. There are a lot of issues in this case unresolved. In this video, at 1:12:00 the detective lies and tells her there's video of the bar "The Bottom Line", and they are not there. The bar owner, under oath, told detectives they have NO video in the bar and none from that night. Also there are text messages and facebook posts that would prove what Sam has said, but detectives didn't want to see them. The police say they've made multiple attempts to get the texts and facebook messages via a court order, and there was no explanation of why they didn't get them. That's just a couple of examples of MANY, like jailhouse snitches who were proven to be lying, etc. etc. etc. I don't know these people - I live in Seattle but did my my own reading and research, and this is not a solid conviction imo - but they were pressured to convict someone for this small little community, and because of Sam's history, he was a very easy target.

Cops lie to suspects in interrogations all the time, it’s common practice, is totally legal and is a tool to put people off balance and get them spun up and nervous. The issue is that morons don’t say the simple statement, I want my lawyer, the second a copy says they wanna ask you some questions.
Cop: “hey, you mind if we ask you a few questions?”
Me: “I’d like to have an attorney”
      See. It’s easy.
And I’m a huge supporter of the police btw. I want a lawyer

@@danielwggudan2 yep I know they lie - I just didn’t realize that was a lie until I researched it. That part is really a KEY component of the prosecution! And as for a lawyer…same 😏 I, too, huge advocate for police. But absolutely, must have a lawyer!!!

@@christina5kids16grands How is him lying about a video to her "key" to the case? He's just seeing how she would respond, would she change her story, would she be nervous, is she lying, etc?? It's just an interrogation tactic. Also in your example, why doesn't Sam just access his own facebook messages with his lawyers if it would prove his innocence? Honest question.

Yeah it should. But they can still talk and if the person is an idiot they'll agree to keep talking. So like they can say "Ok so i'll stop asking questions...I just wanted to know if we can clear you. BUt you'll probably still go to jail tonight and bail out in the morning. UNLESS you want to keep answering a couple questions..." Then if they agree again they can start up. A smart person would say "I want a lawyer" and said NOTHING else. No small talk or nothing.

@@JanoyCresva that's completely false. They need to say clearly for the record " are you waiving your right for an attorney" before asking anything further. They can't just continue to talk and take any responses as somebody waiving their right again. The process starts over essentially.

while I feel that some extra context would've been nice, I really loved the concept of showing many different interrogations relating to the same crime. it was really interesting to see how the detectives treated the different interviewees, and it also really fleshed out the story. could've done with more editing to help clarify who was who and their relation to each other though as well as nice summaries of their interviews after each one perhaps?
