- A lecture given by Bateson in April, 21, 1966, to the "Two Worlds Symposium", at California State University, Sacramento.
Bateson's reflects upon twenty century History in terms of critical moments in which profound attitudinal changes are produced. According to him, the most significant events were the writing of the Treaty of Versailles and the cybernetic breakthrough.

Back in 1993, I was in high school and I saved up my money to buy a set of audio tapes of Bateson speaking at Esalen. I loved these cassettes and listened to them over and over. At some point, they were lost. I never thought that maybe they have been uploaded somewhere online. There's hope! Can't wait to listen to this lecture.
love this talk. So on point.
So on point and more and more every day.. Nora. What future has been created for the children and the children's children in Gaza? and what blind spots do the Israeli Government have about the safety, and happiness of their children and children's children ?
@@differentme.2024 And look up and around. We are all Palestinians now. And still I can with this technic return to Bateson's wisdom at 92 years of age.
See Chris Hedges work on War us a Force that gives us Meaning. Heart breakingly true today.
UU.!
Jan Smuts was aghast at the conditions imposed on the Germans at Versailles - read Anthony Lentin "Jan Smuts - a man of courage and vision." I think Bateson missed Smuts' holism which provided the framework for systems thinking, cybernetics and system dynamics. Yet his point is important - according to Michael Hall: "Where there's a frame there's a game." His analogy of setting the thermostat - getting 'trapped' higher level relationships (frame) and the implicit warning of being framed by computation - warning of AI.
Thanks very much for this document!!!!
gracias!!
Thank you very much for uploading this. Do you know where to find more Bateson audio lectures?
Try Internet Archive. It is where I found this recording. I think there are at least two or three more there.
@@luisgmerida Please consider uploading them to your channel

Hola! Lo tenes subtitulado en castellano? Gracias
Empecé a subtitularlo, pero apenas avancé unos minutos. De todos modos, imagino que puedes encontrar la transcripción de esta entrevista en alguna traducción de ‘Steps to an Ecology of Mind’.

Essentially Bateson was a polymath.
