What a sentence
A hell of a sentence that’s for suree
I don't know why but I find this funny
As a male, seeing how society treat male, i wish what happen in the movie become a reality
Evil feminist be like
This feels so funny
Lady Shogun was indeed a great economist, for trying to reduce the burden of these men on the society and helping them in reducing the gender gap.
And giveing people more rights has allways been known to be better for the economy
Isn't the plague still around?
Lady shogun was such an appealing and interesting character..
Her kindness and actions resulted into this happy and hopeful ending
She was probably the one and only shogun that did the right thing
What about the emperor, so we have empress now?
I was thinking of the 7 yr old instead lol
She's my favorite character of the cast, ngl 😊
hello, there are a fuck ton more shoguns who were perfectly good people and rulers
@Drogon Financial there are actually many times were women had to survive after men die in really higth ratings, especifically during wars
Interesting that the Japanese writers or producers got the idea from current Chinese population problems. But movie is done so well and such a beautiful ending. Usually expected new Shogun lady to be corrupt and harsh like powerful and rich ppl irl. But to see her so kind and caring is so nice.
Wdym by current Chinese population problems? I’d like to hear your thoughts.
@@extremepacifist8719 I'm not sure, but I think he is talking about the difference in the male and female population in China, if I'm not wrong there was a time that they didn't want female child's
@@contareserva3855 and that was caused by a law prohibiting families from having more than one child called the one child policy
I feel like they got the idea from the manga Ooku
@@contareserva3855 yup you are right. China impose the one child policy to limit their population growth because the CCP under Mao did a lot of stupid things like killing birds thinking birds will eat their seeds and crops which actually birds control the locusts without the birds the locust ate all the crops starving millions. They also removed skilled workers from their right jobs to do other jobs they don't know. Basically tons of idiotic policies and stuff which were enforced by death if anyone opposed. So China couldn't sustain such population growth. But once again this miscalculated. Leading to one child which basic Chinese culture favors the son as they can carry on family name. Resulting in shortage of girls. Many of which were aborted or abandoned in the trash. Really sad. Basically what happens when you have a bunch of ppl that don't know anything and not smart about governing take over with force and ppl too fearful to tell them otherwise.

if it wasn't for it being Japanese everyone would assume this movie was all about feminism
@@EnigmazGuide well the western men I guess so-
As a gay man, I wouldn't mind turning straight if that means a woman will do all the work while I stay at home, clean the house, watch the kids and support. It's a much easier task from my experience.
Some of these comments really helped me to realize how much men romanticize being a women. I guess people in general will always think the grass is greener on the other side.
You'd think if men were considered as something only the wealthy could be married to in this universe, then you'd think class difference wouldn't be enough of a problem to prevent marriage
1/5 is pretty low but not impossible to find for the lucky
"Fun" fact, a roughly similar instance gender imbalance actually happened in Paraguay when their batshit dictator decided to declare war on all its neighbors leading to more than 90 percent of its male population being killed and a gender ratio of one man to every eight women.
Though the key variable difference was the occupying forces.
So I doubt any major role reversal will happen in such scenario . Also in such a scenario, its doubtful advanced civilization can still exist as remember, all the statesmen, bureacrats, generals, artists, construction persons, fishermen being wiped out in a single stroke also means their skills and mastery which took years to funrish are wiped out
Yeah there are a lot of brief examples of that throughout history, most wars kill off the male population. It's why there are a lot of societies where the wife knows her husband's trade and can run the household if he dies.
Really the only stretch here is that the role reversal happens in one generation, while it would probably take a few generations of less men being born. But it's a "what-if" movie, so I can suspend my disbelief.
Seems like it would be prudent to ensure the education of girls and women to ensure that a pandemic or male-centered violence wouldn’t completely cripple society.

idk I see dudes doing that in real life, especially in celebrity culture.

Unironically this made me realize how internalized things like toxic masculinity and misogyny are. I genuinely felt uncomfortable when hearing "men are into make-up" and that being seen as a samurai is "weird" for a man. But then I realized that I have no reason to think that way. And the topic of men being abused also brought into perspective what women also experience. And obviously I know about these issues and try to fight them. But I think it's incredible that a movie which was surely to be seen as a comedy actually has this incredible commentary on what the state of the world is.
We've got a long fight on the road ahead for equality, equity, and justice but surely if we continue to work towards it we'll get there.
A good place to start is why you choose to say "toxic masculinity" instead of "misandry", yet you choose to say "misogyny" instead of "toxic femininity". Deconstructing the sexism of our language choices is a powerful first step towards equality. For example countless studies show women and men are equal victims of sexual and domestic abuse, yet we blame the former on "misogyny" and the later on "toxic masculinity". Why is it so hard for society to admit men can be victims and women can be perpetrators? I don't know, but until we can acknowledge men's problems are more than just statistics we can't move forward.
@@shiuido359 it's simple because men are always viewd threw out history as ones to fight most wars where fought my men so when a cop gets a call about domestic abuse they always assume MAN cuased it when in some cases a woman has cause it
misandry, is that a real word? sounds like it has androgen in it but idk
its called freaky friday dude a role swap
There's another movie about the worlds population no longer needing men to procreate. Supposed to be a comedy, is the darkest dystopian movie I've ever seen.
if this actually happened instead of "little dark age masculinity" it would be little dark age "femininity"
Except there is no realistic way for women to have power over men. Men being in charge is not a coincidence.
I don't think men are better than woman nor is woman is better than men, I think both just complete each other, one is good at being supportive helps, one is responsible and respectful, doesn't matter which gender does what, in the end both genders complete each other as the perfect duo
@@flyingkite2972 The only reason is that men are physically stronger than women. If women were the stronger gender (like in some animal species), then most of the world would've been a matriarchy instead of a patriarchy
@@HusbandoCollector it's not only physical strength, but also psychological disposition, behavior, etc. No matter how strong someone is, if they never use that strength, their strength is equal to nothing.

Unless fertilization and pregnancy changed for women, the premise of the movie would still fail. Societies with a few men, but many women can rebound relatively quickly.
Takes a while for social norms to change to allow that though.
@@skyworm8006 not exactly. as mentioned alredy, paraguay in late xix century suffered a crippling 90% men fatality after a war, women started being recruited to army and were sole providers of agricultural product for years, thus because of the depopulation, men were encouraged OVER DAY after the war to have multiple children with multiple women, even supposedly celibate Catholic priests. This persists to current day in many cases.
Similarly, other cultures that already had this multiple wives thing(also due to some gender imbalance event further in the past), like Chechnya, lifted the maximum limit of marraiges to rebuild the population after the destructive war.
This movie is amazing because it’s reality but reversed genders.
True

@@unicasintenia and how is that a man only thing.even irl right now women manipulate just to put "their" man on a leash

Untrue, the reason women lived the way they lived in the past was not because scarcity of them. Women have always been as plentiful as men in society. It was because of biological differences and differences in physical strength. It's easier to send to battle the humans who had the bulkier physiques and work at the harder labors of the fields. Women neede to contribute in other ways men weren't doing to alleviate their hard work.

There is another Japanese movie or drama with a similar premise (probably in the same franchise or same story universe) about a Female Shogun with a harem of men. In this other one, the male lead is a handsome buddhist monk who was forced to give up his vow as a monk to become the young shogun's concubine. I forgot the name of that movie or drama.
That’s a prequel to the story in this movie, she was the first female shogun. The rule about the guy who takes a female shogun’s virginity having to die afterwards was because this first female shogun was raped. She killed the guy immediately afterwards but she never really got over it and that unchecked trauma was passed down in the form of that rule for every female shogun after her.
Sad that Sakewa never got informed that his intimate friend didn't actually die.
I thought this ended with his death, which was sad but fine.

How are you suppose to raise the next 2 generations if the economy is fucked ? Beside, the red face pox wasn't stop when it killed 80% of mens, it's killing the next generation too
You should watch the korean movie "bedeviled".
Exactly. Not 80% sure, but men regularly die in wars in ABSURD numbers..... and the population revoers within two or even one generation.
WW1. Germany surrenders. NOT EVEN a generation later, Germany is ready for round two(and performs better than anyone could have ever believed).

The Lady Shogun and Her Men is a mixed bag to say the least. The costumes and the sets are gorgeous, and Ninomiya and Shibasaki are perfectly cast in their respective roles. Yet while it seems inevitable in Japanese cinema that some of this would be played for laughs, what is more troubling is how extremely prejudiced the movie is. While it may not have been the intention of the film, it could certainly be read as having its own politics against homosexuality, or even just making fun. However, by the time the films builds towards its “emotional” conclusion, and cop-out pay-off, there will few people still connected in any way to the paper-thin characters.
lol snowflake spotted
Japan isn't exactly LBGTQ friendly
@@americanmapper2445 Is it really? Cause from what I knew in Japan´s history, homosexual had been openly exist since ancient time. I even find many sources (although it were all already translated or just videos) saying that many wealthy and noble family bought 'rent boy' for their unmarried son, and that even in temples, the children who came to learn to be a monk would need to learn to 'serve' their mentor too. Samurais also think that a love betwen men are purer and more macho than a love between men and women.
Not to mention, even in this modern era, Yaoi and Yuri is, like, one of the mst popular genre and probably almost half of Japanese mangas contains a same sex couple, if not a romantic interest.
Although admittedly, I have no idea how it is in the nowadays real life.
I didn't see the film, just this recap. I didn't think this was against homosexuality. If it had any message about the seggsual activities between the men in the ooku, it was a message against Grape. For example one of the characters complains that at night the other men have their way with him, heavily implying it's not consensual.
I dont think this movie was being homophobic. Think of the context of the movie. The population skews 20% men and 80% women, men have become a precious commodity, so the harem situation going on in the palace seemed like a waste to the mc. Plus, the men were only using each other to alleviate their needs, due to the original shogun being 9 years old as explained by mc's workbuddy. It wasn't played for a laugh or for disgust.
"He is beautiful", " his dress"😹😹😹😹
I understand that this is based on current population problems but no one seems to realize here how ridiculous this premise actually is. China's lack of women does not translate into a similar scenario when it comes to the lack of men. Why? Because one man can have relationships with multiple women. What would end up happening in such a scenario is that men would just have lots and lots of wives. The idea that somehow gender roles would fundamentally reverse and that men would become courtesans or prostitutes is just risible. The role of prostitutes and courtesans is not a function of how many women exist in society vis-a-vis men. It's a function of the needs of men period. The same is true of carpenters and fisherman or any job really. The amount of men or women doing these jobs is not the result of the relative proportion of men and women in society. While it would certainly be true that more women might do jobs that men traditionally do if there were fewer men, the reality is that were there fewer men that would mean even more demand for the roles that men are best suited to fill. That means more men doing manual labor not residing in palaces and having gay sex lol. In such a world the men would not be lounging around while the women worked. They would be expected to work even harder to provide for all the women they would need in order to simply create more men. While the women would have to work harder, men would also have to work much much harder simply to ensure the future of the whole society.
China has less girls but not to the extent that their female population is a quarter of male population. So it doesn't really correlate to this film. This film is just a what-if phenomenon, & so is ur cmt.
@@lotusrain4102 cmt?
@@finnleyjack331 comment
Not historically. Historically speaking whenever the male population is greatly reduced or removed from the workforce for some reason (a recent example of this that might be local to you is America in ww2), the women always move into the traditionally masculine job to keep everyone fed and clothed. Society holds its gender roles dear when it can afford them, but when it can’t, it adapts. One man cannot do the work of five, it’s simply not physically possible.
And I wouldn’t be surprised if a virus that made male babies rarer led to the men of the family being protected and commodified. There’s a really cool novel called A Brother’s Price that deals with something similar, where a man’s sisters are trying to get a good dowry from him to find themselves a husband, and also a novelette called “A Matter of Seggri” from Ursula K LeGuin that’s an anthropological study of a fictional society where there is 1 man for every 15 women.
Do you know what the word 'fiction' means? Or 'thought experiment'? It isn't supposed to be realistic. Like how Zootopia is a message about rac**m using animals. It's a movie.

When men have uno reverse card:
When men get their wish of being treated just for being a specific gender??lol
Women are treated with special treatment in modern society though.

if i were in this situation i would be like:
"oh look im a luxury resource now time to go for a walk and get money while at it"
wow this is a very unique concept. I really appreciate this
first luv ur vids man
Tbh this kinda makes more sense, because usually in this gender role reversal scenarios it's reversed just because, and the norms are treated as something completly arbitrary... In a normal human society males are seen as more expendable because one man can impregnate many women, so the lives of men are seen as less important. While females are more pampered, protected & restricted because they have to give more effort into procreation, pregnancy & caring for children - losing a woman is a bigger loss. And it kinda makes sense that some of this norms would be in part reversed in a society that has very small number of men, even if not exactly how this movie potrays it.
It makes sense for a male ruler to have a harem, because he can have dozens or hundreds of offspring from which he can choose the best successor.
The harem doesn't make much sense for a female ruler. Two, three lovers, which she will change every few years, for sure. Maybe she'll keep one or two for a long time, and sometimes she'll have young men to have fun. But the harem won't help her have more offspring, so she doesn't need harem for anything.
More women can easily share one man, because they will always be sure that they are the mothers of their child. A man who wants to be sure of his fatherhood cannot share one woman with other men in this way. He has to make sure he's the only one with a sexual access.
80% women and 20% men would not be a serious problem for society. Men would be used as breeding bulls, paying for their sexual services, but there would be no reason to keep one man for one woman, even if she was rich, other than for her to show wealth and power. And she could still lend him to her friends and loose nothing.
So it will never be the same between women and men when reversing roles. Biologically, we are all different and this is the basis for a different role in society.
I mean that’s true on a realistic level. But when have people ever liked only purely pragmatic media. It doesn’t have to make sense to make people feel something. This is more of a what if type of movie for the fun of it
@@ejedwards1678 Harems definitely had their drawbacks. Yet many of the most stable ruling, patrilineal dynasties had some form of harem or concubinate. Because if they didn't, it could lead to situations like Henry VIII's, King of England, and it didn't help stability either.
There is no point in pretending that our ancestors were fools and if we lived in their time, with their level of technology, we would do better. With infant mortality and life expectancy, the importance of physical strength, no effective contraception, and a much worse economy, where people have existed interdependently in relationships, many of our conveniences of individual rights have simply not been possible.
And even now, our ability to choose a female or male role is valid only as long as there is peace and abundance. Ukraine bans male citizens aged 18 to 60 from leaving because they had to stay and fight. Only women could flee the country with their children. No one cared that he was SAHD and she was working.
