Nevermind what to play I can't even decide what RUclips videos to watch anymore.
I was scrolling through my home page, I saw this video, looked at the length, couldn't be bothered to watch it atm so added it to 'watch later' (like I do with about 100 videos a day), then I decided "actually na I'll have a look at it now" , opened it, sat through 2 long ads (one was unskippable), & immediately paused it before it even began to write this comment, now I'm gonna lock my phone and get back the game I'm playing, but I'll watch the video the next time I unlock my phone.
Way too much stuff these days leaves you so all over the place, gotta ditch the smartphone soon.

I've found the same to be true for me - "just pick a game." I usually only have 2 or 3 games I'm working on at any given time - aside from the multiplayer ones that sit in my rotation.
I think you have an interesting discussion point in playing critically acclaimed games just because they're critically acclaimed. As a dev, I feel like it's important for me to study these games, but like you said - I don't always enjoy them. Dave the Diver, for example, is a game I just can't get myself to like. Just a personal preference thing. But I can at least see the qualities in the game that have made it resonate with others. Learnings I can incorporate into my own dev process, even though my game is quite different in general.

It's such a difficult thing! The over saturation is telling you to play everything or you'll get FOMO! (Good to see you again!)

This is super true for me, I have so many games at my disposal thanks to PlayStation Premium but I just take forever to select and commit to finishing one and time goes by and I don’t got time to play anymore. However, now ima just start a game, finish it and enjoy it, got my eyes set on Prototype 1 and 2, then InFamous 2 after.

it almost makes me miss the old 360 days when almost all of my games were physical and id buy one or two at a time and id actually beat them before buying something new

I have aggressively worked to clear my backlog entirely, and I'm getting very close. I did so many things from listing them out, finding out how long each game was, mixing them up so I wouldn't do too many of one genre or too many long games in a row. There were many games that made the completed pile after an hour because I didn't feel it, and some that hit the completed file at 3/4ths of the way through because I was just losing too much interest before ever hitting the credits screen.
Now that I'm near the end I have three piles of games in my Steam library. "The Graveyard" is where games go that I know I never want to play again. They could have been fantastic games, like Control for instance which I enjoyed every minute of, but I know I never want to go back and replay that title again. I enjoyed my time and now I'm done. And then of course the Graveyard is full of titles that never clicked and I know I'm not going to try and force it. Then there's the "Replay One More Time" category for games that I want to experience one more time, either to try a different route or because it's been many many years since I enjoyed them and want to refresh my memory once more. Finally I have the "Forever" pile. These are the games that, when I stop buying new games entirely someday, I will just replay the Forever pile for the rest of my life. This pile is home to the likes of Skyrim, Fallout 3/4/NV, the Mass Effect trilogy, Stardew Valley, and many more. Games I know I will never tire of, even if I do take a break from one for a while I'll eventually come back. My comfort games, like he mentioned.
It'll be interesting when I'm finally done. I'll have one big pile of forever games that are cherished favorites and comfort titles, and then maybe the occasional new game as it comes down the pipeline (though my buying habits have become much more restrictive as I become more critical and selective with my purchases). It'll be easy to integrate into life alongside my family, friends, wife, children, etc. And hey if life gets so hectic I have to take a break for like a month? I won't feel like I'm missing out, since most of my remaining titles are ones I've played a dozen times. Anyway that's just what I'm hoping will work for me.

i am currently trying to not bother about picking a game or show at all. i always thought that if i play or watch too many different things and not finish them up i will mess up everything and not enjoy it. that's not true. i can play a lot of games and just fell the moment and than move on, because i don't feel like it. it's not even that bothering me financially, i can a lot of really cheap games on my backlog + xbox/ea play when i need it. so maybe we need just to chill out and play something 'casually and good enough' for this moment and enjoy it? idk
