    Senior here applying by November 1st, and I do not have an essay. I spent half of summer procrastinating and chilling, and the other half doing SAT prep, only to get a not-much-higher score than my last one. Got about 7 days exactly, and I have no clue what to write about. I'm not an athlete, haven't started some crazy business that changed the world, and I'm not top 10 in academics in my class. I know, the essay does not have to be some grand thing like that, but I still have to have some significance in it... which is what I'm struggling with.

    Hello, I am applying to a school a second time. My application has an essay prompt regarding reflection on experiences and personal development since my last application. (50 to 250 words) I was thinking about discussing that when I last applied my school had not ranked me in relation to my graduating class yet, I was the Valedictorian. The school really cares about student ranking and my school did not rank students unless they got the Valedictorian or Salutatorian ranks. I want to discuss this topic and how it gauges how I performed against others in a similar environment that being my high school. In addition to this I wanted to discuss my preferences for smaller classes which I have become aware of as of coming to a big college. I want smaller classes much like at smaller liberal universities because it is easier to get ahold of professors, ask questions, and make connections with other students as they not always sitting in different spots. I also thought I would discuss experience I have gained while working as intern in the summer and how I learned to work well with supervisors and co-workers, therefore developing communication skills.

    • @jacobboe7711
      @jacobboe7711 2 года назад +1

      I'm so worried. I did the 7th prompt as well, writing about how disobedience and rebellion fosters social progress, and while I do think that it is "personal," i.e. it says something about me (specifically, what I believe in), it isn't first-person. I applied to the Ivies, Stanford, UChicago, and a few others, and I have been sweating it ever since I submitted the applications and thereafter watched videos like these. What are they going go think? Is that too impersonal of a topic? Anybody give me an answer.

    • @poshiey1734
      @poshiey1734 2 года назад +1

      @@jacobboe7711 as long as the essay is sound and your supplemental responses showcase yourself you will be just fine. something she doesn’t mention in this video on the 7th prompt is how not talking about yourself can make you stand out even more. if thousands of people are talking about themselves endlessly and there’s those few students that instead bring up a topic so personal/passionate that they can showcase their knowledge and in turn what they can apply to the school, that is a Huge advantage. i didn’t apply to ivies but i did get accepted to all the schools i applied to. you will be fine!

      I think it depends on how you phrase things and what themes you stress when writing the essay, but it could work for a couple, like if you talk about what being diagnosed with and overcoming it taught you it might be close to #2, or maybe your diagnosis and fight to overcome helped you view yourself and others differently (or something similar) which would be more like #5

      I would be careful w that considering colleges will look at rec letters to back it up. Also, I think college admission officers would see through it. Sometimes, especially smaller schools, will actually check online to back up the applicants story idk!

      @@adriannazhang2096 Well if it's something only you know, i.e a personal story, there is literally nothing they can say against it. I'm not recommending lying on your essay, but just saying. Of course lying about any measurable accomplishment is the worst idea because they can just ask to see it and you'd be screwed.

    Is it okay to write about a BLM protest I helped organize and lead? The only issue is that I’m not black so I don’t want to come across as performative, which I know I’m not.

    • @mannyokafor4609
      @mannyokafor4609 2 года назад

      Often times, if a non-POC feels that they are being performative they often are. But if you really aren't then go for it, but it goes without saying not to be snobby about it, and make sure you write about how it has affected your life in a certain way, not just what you did.

    • @mickyg9689
      @mickyg9689 2 года назад +1

      Oh for sure that’s like an automatic acceptance

    • @JustAnotherLokiStan
      @JustAnotherLokiStan 2 года назад +3

      Okay, I'm a poc, and I have mixed feelings about this. It would make for a very good essay, but I feel like there's a huge risk of slipping into dangerous territory here because it'll be very easy for you to sound as if you have a saviour complex. It's more about that perceived saviour complex than it is about being performative, imo. If you really dedicated time and effort to it, then you're not performative and that's easy to figure out. But displaying saviour complex is much harder to avoid in an essay such as this one because you haven't personally experienced the struggles black people (and poc in general) go through, so I feel like writing your personal statement about that would feel kinda forced, almost as if you think it puts you at the top of the world somehow. I'm not saying that's why you did it, but this is a delicate subject, just like the volunteer trip essays which end up sounding more entitled than inspiring. My advice would be to write about this in a supplement essay instead of in your common app essay. Look up the supplement essays for each college and see if they have prompts that ask you to write about experiences that changed your worldview or smth like that. And make sure to keep the self aggrandization to a minimum-focus more on how you will continue to support BLM in college, and if there are any specific support systems/diversity programs in XYZ college that you would like to participate in. Good luck 👍
