Honestly, the most important thing to consider when applying is your own sanity. Take a few deep breaths, try and find your calm spot, and remember that whatever happens will happen. CORRECTION! We discovered that our data for Harvard appears to have mistakenly included about 349 deferrals from previous admissions cycles. The REA admit rate is still 7.4%, but the regular decision admit rate is 2.6%, and the total admit rate is 3.4%. The chart in our blog is updated to reflect the corrected numbers. We apologize for the error!
Don't be scared-- as long as your essays are good the rest (grades, coursework, etc.) can be added in later if you can at least get deferred (and Harvard defers a LOT of students).
First video who understands the difference between stats and probabilities. At our school, 10 kids applied ED to Dartmouth and only 2 got in. But 6 of those who didn’t get in had an SAT less than 1450 and a GPA less than 3.3 So really depends on where you are. Your probability could be zero or 50%.
Definitely -- "not all candidates have the same chances." I have a short list that I've made for one certain school and guessing on those, they probably have very high chances. Comes down to: Right stats Great fit Right achievements
Well thanks to this video I now regret submitting my application earlier. Since for my past act test I felt like I did a lot better. Also I'm not that exceptional so I needed everything I could get.
Please don't have regrets!! In terms of tests etc. if you can just get deferred instead of rejected you will still have a chance. Likewise, my hope is that you understand that MORE STUDENTS GET INTO A GREAT SCHOOL DURING REGULAR ADMISSIONS than get in early. Every year I have students get in somewhere great during regular admissions as often as I have equally qualified students getting in early. I'm just trying to debunk the myth that you must do early or else!! If your last ACT was better, LET THE SCHOOL KNOW as soon as your score drops! They may very well still take it into consideration.
@@brookifyd Ok thanks! Didn't want to sound so negative in the comment, just wanted to relieve some stress. I have a decent chance but I don't have the wow factor.
this did kind of ease my mind because my top choice is ut austin and i applied on their priority deadline. since they're like top 50 i'm hoping that doing priority will still help my chances. this video was pretty eye-opening about top 20 schools though
Admissions rates are higher during early action b/c that is when the university admits the athletes, children of faculty, donors insiders, and friends of the Dean. Now with test optional, there is no disincentive for them to limit the percentage of these special interest applicants. In the past, their test scores would damage the university's profile if their are too many of them.
Without watching the video yes, I had a bad junior year and now have a 3.2 gpa while on 4.0 pace with max aps in senior year, why would I not wait to send the good grades in
There's more to this, though. Colleges can raise their yield rates while lowering overall acceptance rates by taking half their new class from the ED pool, though it's much much smaller. Almost anyone's chances are higher if they apply ED (binding). But of course, having your application polished is a given.
You didn't mention athletic recruiting. This is huge at the top 10 schools. If you look at the actual number of kids admitted, many are recruited athletes.
This is true-- it was in my notes and probably even in one of the takes but didn't make the final cut for whatever reason-- this is mixed in w/ the alumni weight in early rounds. But the story is the same. EA /REA / ED isn't the advantage many think it is.
I am a senior in high school, and I want to apply early decision to Boston University (I'm out of state). I have a 4.2 something weighted GPA and a 3.9 or 3.7 unweighted GPA. I have led a few clubs such as a book club 10th grade, the computer science club in 11th and 12th grade, and two different ministry activities. I also won second and fifth place in two science Olympiad competitions (but I am majoring in psych). I want to submit my application as "test optional" since I didn't get a good score, and I was wondering if being test optional would hurt my chances at all, and if you think I have a decent chance of being accepted, and if you have any tips to better my chances. Thank you so much for your time, your videos are so helpful. Have a good day!

If you had a LOT of B's freshman year. A's and a couple b's sophomore/junior year as available. School had no grades for part of COVID or totally inflated grades or something so you don't stand out much, but you're legit getting straight As now.
