- When looking into pop culture, you don't have to go very far before you find some sort of reference to dinosaurs. Sometimes massive, sometimes terrifying, these ancient reptiles have become cornerstones in the culture of North America and the world as a whole, especially following the release of Jurassic Park, one of the most popular franchises in cinema today.
So with a chokehold like that on the world, it should come as a little bit of a surprise that there actually aren't that many teams across the sporting world---and even fewer in college sports---that use dinosaurs as their nickname or mascot. Purdue-Fort Wayne and Calgary in USports Canada are the two main ones that come to mind. But why is it that they're so rare?
Join me and my friend @empireonyt15 as we try to discover why that is, and what possible changes could be made to existing schools and nicknames that could give them a fitting prehistoric flair.
The films featured in bits from this video are all in the public domain, including Along the Moonbeam Trail, The Lost World, and Gertie the Dinosaur. Well.....
The Bird Schools......
South Carolina especially
I think terror-saurs would be a decent team/mascot name.... Or would it be pterror-saurs...? 😅😂🤣
I want to make a joke about the title asking why there are no NCAA schools for dinosaurs but I don't think many people would make that connection
That took me longer to figure out than I’d like to admit
I’m mad that I have to admit that was good. I will be stealing it to upset someone in the near future
It's because the school buildings and campus would have to be huge to accommodate their physical size. We'd need gigantic food courts, dorms, fraternity/sorority houses, bathrooms for all dino genders... And then we'd have to make enormous pencils, paper, computers, etc just for them.
NCAA Dinosaur Sports would be a huge money maker though!

Mammoth is one of the finalists to be the name of the Utah NHL team
I hope they pick the venom honestly, the other names give off Colorado avalanche vibes, and they’re right there
@@burgon.g82 I want mammoth for everything stated in this video
Mammoth is also the name of Colorado's Pro Lacrosse team
@@christiankallio8586 what’s a lacroix?
Utah Yeti hopefully is the winner
Fun Fact: Tri-C's greatest basketball player is Pistons/NBA legend, 4x DPOY, 1x Champion, and NBA hall of famer, Ben Wallace.
I NEVER thought Tri-C Cuyahoga would ever be mentioned in something big like a Dalukes vid, thank goodness they have a cool mascot to get recognized by my favorite 12 poster! Thank you for that.
As a Cleveland guy, I was just about to comment something similar!
A sun devil is a weather event that occurs when hot air from above the sun-baked ground rises into cooler air. It's also known as a whirlwind, dust devil, dancing devil, or whirling dervish. Sun devils can be as small as 3 feet in diameter, but some can be as large as 300 feet wide
1:18 Thank you for shouting out Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio. I've just graduated there with an Associates in Applied Business this May 2024! What a pleasant surprise!
Arizona State were originally called the Owls, then transitioned to Devils after expanding to more than just a teacher's college. After WWII, Phoenix got its nickname of the Valley of the Sun. A local newspaper, talking about the recent football game, called the team the "Valley of the Sun" Devils. However, people read that as the Valley of the "Sun Devils," and the name stuck.
I guess you could say dinosaur names are a bit extinct. 🥁
there's a lack of reptile team names in general. turtles/tortoises live basically everywhere in the continental us and have tons of cool species to choose from for a team name, but the only one that comes to mind is Maryland. its honestly a shame there isn't a single team called the snapping turtles.
As a graduate of Montana State, I would welcome a dinosaur mascot over the Bobcats.
7:24. Never thought I’d see him mention Drexel 🐉🐉🐉
Toronto Raptors - iconic logo, marketable, great throwback uniforms. Schools in search of a mascot, there’s your inspiration.
Also can’t forget about the Nashville Predators. Sabertooth Tiger
wow it's like it's mentioned that he forgot them IN THE VIDEO
@@kaegeratordidnt really mention it, just threw some 9 pt text on the bottom of the screen for like 2 seconds. No need to get upset with someone for missing that
I actually remember learning about Duke University being called the Blue Devils after either a French military unit that specialized in alpine warfare and used a dark blue and white uniform. Apparently it was just chosen by the students because they were cool
It's ironic I found this video because for the new EA Sports College Football game coming out I'm creating a fictional Wyoming State in team builder with a Raptor mascot. I always thought the rocky mtn region needed more dino names.
How are you making that team? Are you going with high overalls, or looking to make the team terrible year 1?
@@mitchellskene8176 oh they are absolute dog shite. All walk on guys with lots of heart but will probably lose every game for a couple of years. I'm going for the long build up and reward of maybe 10 plus years to win a playoff game
@@CreepCaveFilms That sounds super fun!! Are you doing that offline/for your own enjoyment, or would you consider making that a visible series to watch for whomever is interested? I'd watch a series like that!!
@@mitchellskene8176 I may do a series on my channel. I've never done a video game series but I've played tons of franchises and dynasty modes across multiple sports games
@@CreepCaveFilmsI too would watch such a series
Surprised, you never brought up that most school nicknames come from their newspapers in the 1920s, which is why bulldogs, tigers, and wildcats are so popular. It was just old timey slang that stuck. "They fought like wildcats/bulldogs/tigers"
I’m not gonna lie if someone changed to a dinosaur name they would be my second favorite team. I’m 21 and never grew out of the dinosaur obsession
33 and same here lol.
Probably because most university teams are generally older than modern dinosaur knowledge.
I live in a Megalodon hot spot state and the big High School rivalry involves the “Loyola Dons” which uses the older definition of a Don as a sort of knight like person. They should totally change their nickname to be about Megalodons.
Also the next “The Meg” movie should totally take place in D.C in a Hurricane.
also a marylander and had no clue that we are a megalodon hot spot! i see a rabbit hole i’m about to go down… lol
Also the Nashville Predators were named after a Saber Tooth Tiger was found when making a building (not sure if it was the stadium or a different building). That’s there branding now.
You forgot the Ogden Raptors of the Pioneer Baseball League.
I'm gonna be so real with you, for some reason I was under the impression that league folded
@@lukeontheplains nope, they’re still around. They just became an independent league.
University of Illinois built a woolly mammoth sculpture on campus last year and it's been a popular site for students and families alike. As Illini grapple with the possibility of a new mascot, I don't know why they're still considering a bird when their land's history is right in front of them. Illini need a mammoth on the field
I have to say, moving away from Native imagery to have "fighting Illini" encompass the people of the state was a worthy rebrand. That being said, Mammoths would be hard-core and I'd love every second of it
"Mastodons" is metal af and has great symbolism.
That’s the name of a metal band after all too
In the late 60s, the University of Kansas had a push to change their name to Mammoths that did not go very far
Florida would NEVER change Gators.
They can change their mascot to an ancient species which were more massive and badass than current gators
I got recruited by Maranatha Baptist. Never thought I’d hear them again in a RUclips video about dinosaurs. 😭
boise state brontosaurs or riot
There was a school in Manchester, Ohio called Alfred Holbrook College that was known as the Dinosaurs. They played in both the 1939 and 1940 NAIA basketball tournaments but the school closed in 1941 and all remaining property was demolished in 1977.
Wasn’t expecting Tri-C in Cleveland to get a shout out for the Triceratops. But technically, birds are avian dinosaurs and there are a few schools named after birds.
Cool video. You mentioned Utah St, but the new Utah NHL team not even including Raptors on the list for fans to vote for was a mammoth miss. There is a dinosaur called the Utahraptor!
The Florida Gators would technically count. There’s a more accurate definition of the prehistoric Gators/Crocs, but minus the overall size of the animal, not much has changed.
Also the Colorado Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League
Isn’t UAB kinda a Dino school. Dragon 🐉. Well we may be in mythical creator land lol 🤷🏽♂️😂
Bird team names as modern day dinosaurs are birds
UCLA sabercats would be siiick
For a state in the prehistoric continent of Appalachia, Georgia does have some good fossils. For starters there is Lorphorhothon, a hadrosauroid dinosaur that was first found in Alabama, but other specimens have been found in Georgia. Also Montana State University does kinda have a dinosaur mascot, but not for the school itself. The world famous Museum of the Rockies is connected to the University with many of the researchers being professors, and MOR has a Tyrannosaurus Rex mascot named Rocky Rex who shows up for games along with the Bobcat mascot Champ.
Many schools had a chance to become dinos when they changed away from Indian nicknames, but they went with unimaginative. Red Hawks, Red Wolves?
The UM Tyrants goes hard ngl
These are the conspiracy’s that keep me up at night.
One of the most famous arena football teams ever was the San Jose SaberCats
Going through all these dinosaur potential names make it obvious why there isn’t why dinosaur names...
You're crazy to think UF should be anything but a Gator, its so beloved and a keystone of our school as they are found on campus.
Any school with a bird mascot is going with the descendants of dinosaurs. In the case of Florida (Gators), we went with crocodilians, an older lineage, but one still close to dinosaurs
“Dinger, the Rockies mascot, gets hate year round, they’re seen as dorky, dweebish, and too much like Barney the dinosaur. That extends beyond the costumes mascots too, just the names for the athletics teams in general”
Oh man, I can’t remember the last time I heard someone make a remark about dinosaurs being childish or whatever.
The Nashville predators technically count
8:00 totally caught me off guard lol, GO GATORS!!!!!🐊
There is the Ogden Raptors in Utah in the MiLB
diss on the broncos again, Buster is a goated mascot
Gotta that UofC Dinos logo. Love the shout out
They do it’s at the d3 level for sure Rutgers-Camden. Is the scarlet raptors
You should do SEC history
I plan on making the Hell Creek Tech T Rexes on College Football 25 team builder, who’s mascot is of course, Sue the T Rex (great video btw this video ironically combined two of my favorite interests)
Too many schools have the same name, we got like a billion wildcats, warhawks, bulldogs, tigers and eagles. Make it unique
I finally found my niche group of dinosaur and sports fans
Because most schools were founded before dinosaurs were discovered
Living smack dab between Fort Wayne and Toledo....LET'S GO DONS!
We need more dinosaur and alien mascots.
I think a lot of these institutions were in existence well before dinosaurs were popular.
I think the question was answered by the map. The area where fossils are most prevalent (The Rocky Mountain Region) is only where about 3% of the US population lives. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
A sidebar to the absence of dinosaur mascot in college sports: you also do not see primary team colors of black and silver/white.
Throwback to Penn State being pink and Colorado being baby blue
To add on to Empire's take on the Bulldog, as one FOSSIL (heh) on ESPN has said before, multiple times, "THAT DOG IS UGLY!! That is one ugly dog!"
Here’s a partial reason I propose: Dino names are waaay too long. Just the number of syllables.
I find it weird how nobody uses a white tail deer as a mascot
A little bit more obscure but: The Texas A&M Acrocanthosaurus’s or The Texas Tech Iguanodon’s. Also as a first time viewer I see your a cultured man in the ancient art of baseball.
As a gators fan I love this
HELL YEAH PURDUE MENTIONED (even though it was just Purdue Fort Wayne)
Got the KBO team, The Dinos
Nebraska's an interesting one because they were once called the Mankilling Mastodons.
I’m making a custom team all Dino conference in College Football 25
Magical lioplurodon!
Very interesting video about a question I didn’t realize I had
Drexel mention @ 7:27
You'll be able to trace the lineage of numerous CFB 25 Teambuilder teams with dino mascots to this exact video.
The Rocky Mountain State Raptors will dominate the MWC
There’s also the Nashville Predators, whose mascot is a saber-toothed tiger
7:24 HOLY DEPAUL VINTAGE BILLY LOGO SPOTTED
I gotchu bb
Great video love the idea
Massive bone to pick - see what u did there mr. empire
A lot of those bulldog teams are actually decent. It wouldn't change just based on branding alone.
My sister graduated from Utah State and my brother in law is getting his masters there now. The slander is uncalled for 😭
I liked this video until we reached the part of Empire renaming all the schools
Why is this actually a good question 😂
dalukes: posts a video
Me: Is it a mini documentary about a mid major conference I didn’t care about.
dalukes: No
Me: Oh…
JMU MENTIONED RAHHHHH
I also think it's worth noting that none of the rocky mountain region schools initially named themselves the "Indians" or "R-skins" or something else they would've had to change in the late 90's-early 00's, when Jurassic Park and dinosaurs' popularities were at their respective peaks
ECSU, a small HBCU in North Carolina, needs a new mascot because it make no sense that their mascot is the Vikings. College of the Albemarle, same city as ECSU, mascot is named the Dolphins. Neither of these mascots make any sense at given the area.
5:38 as a Maryland grad I’m wondering if I have the qualities of a large turtle 🐢
You a fan of Klayton Fioriti? if not you used the exact same background music he uses in all of his videos
used to be! There aren't many dinosaur related tracks on the RUclips audio library haha. Makes sense we'd overlap significantly
I dont even like sports but theses ones are cool
If only I could think of a school with a large man eating lizard as a mascot
8:12 the university of Florida has the 5th largest collection of fossils in the United States at the Florida Museum of Natural History. While yes, giant land lizards aren’t the main thing, you’ll still find plenty of waterborne species there. Admittedly much of the collection is much more recent, but nonetheless massive. Free to the public too
The closest is the UAB Dragons
cool
Good video!
Fort Wayne and San Francisco both have the Mastadons. Mastodon, for some reason, is a very popular extinct animal.
Whats odd to me is that there seem to be more "mastodon" schools than "elephant" schools. If a team does have an elephant for a mascot, it's either unofficial (Alabama choosing an elephant to go with their nickname of Crimson Tide) or a different word entirely (Tufts going by the Jumbos but having elephant imagery)
Just a theory, but I wonder if Mighty Morphin Power Rangers had an influence on the Mastadon‘s popularity
I think a team named the terror-saurs would be a decent team name/mascot..... Or would it be pterror-saurs? 😅😂🤣
While I agree that the pre-renaissance image of dinosaurs may not have been a good fit for sports teams, I disagree with your assessment that dinosaurs weren’t really popular prior to Jurassic Park. Anything but- they had been fixtures of popular culture since the statues of Crystal Palace Park first stalked the British public’s imagination in the mid-1800s. And if anything the argument could be made that they were scarier back then than they are now (with our modern understanding making them out to be animals rather than the antediluvian monsters they were once imagined as).
Did my 2.5 year old write this video? (Honestly this is dope as a South Dakota State alum I love the Jacks mascot and logos but being the Sues would've been dope)
8:17 What are you doing steppe beast?
You could rebrand Baylor from the bears to the mammoths if you really wanted to. Waco has the Mammoth Site national monument.
The only obvious solution that I can see here is to get a time machine
Birds are technically dinosaurs. But it's not common knowledge i guess
