real life example, you buy an M140i. you remap it, fit LSD, Coilovers, bigger brakes, wheels and tyres to match the M2 Comp. your mpg has dropped significantly thanks to the mods. you've spent almost as much as the M2 Comp but now it's time to sell, no one is willing to give you more than stock m140i money for it. Moral of the story: JUST BUY THE M2 COMP.

I did everything you just said, at the time of buying my car (M240i LCI manual) was & 20k cheaper than an M2 Comp as an approved used car in 2021 when I got it. I’ve spent about £5k in total including labour, my car is 430hp and about 75kg lighter than the M2 comp. It could use some wider tyres which I’ll do this summer. It’s certainly on the level of a stock M2 comp in manual trim, a DCT would get away for obvious reasons.
You’re right, if I sell I’ve lost money on the mods but conversely had I got the M2 comp I would have lost £12k through depreciation alone and the consumable components on the M2 are almost double that of the M240i, at most my current car has only lost £3k. MPG is still good (40+ on a run) so I see now downsides. It’s been so great I’ve kept the car longer than I normally do and have no plans to sell. Buying today however the Comp is probably the way to go, especially if you’re not sure how to mod a car and actually improve it.

140 with Bilstein damptronics and a Remus cat back exhaust is just a great daily driving package with some performance. M2 Comp is the better drivers car undoubtedly and looks significantly better but would be jarring to live with day to day. Struggling to think what to replace the 140 with, if I were to go bmw again it’d have to be a g series car though. F series are really getting on now

I love the engine on my 240i, and it’s fun in the dry and wet. However I agree, on Uk B roads it bounces about all over the place and feels crap. My old Clio RS would have it on a twisty B road, shame, with decent suspension it would be superb

It's surprising from BMW- I used to have an M135i which felt exactly the same- you never felt entirely in control, the car wanders slightly over the bumps so you back off. I'm currently driving a Quattro TT that's 100bhp down on power but feels much sharper and more planted. On a B road and I'm pretty sure I can go just as quickly in it because of the confidence it inspires.

Previous m140i owner here and had it running stage 2+ with B8 shocks. No LSD but I grew tired of it quickly. It was rapid but always felt soft. Yes I could have spend a few thousand more on it but I couldn’t justify it as it still wouldn’t be a proper M car. Also as they are so affordable now, it opened the door to idiots buying them and ruining them. Wasn’t much fun going out for drives and passing several of them with sill looking mods and popping and banging all over the place. You’ll never get that with an M2 comp.

Another very good honest review 👏
I have a heavily modded m140i and have owned it nearly 5 years. I drove a m2c for the first time at the weekend and was very excited to finally get behind the wheel of one. But i was left a litter confused and disappointed. I just don't know if they are worth all tge extra say after 4/5 years of ownership. Yes they look better and it obviously felt sharper in the corners, not a massive amount mind. I suppose if money was no issue then id go m2c all day but for a daily driver im probably having just as much fun in my m140i.
Just haven't got bragging rights down the pub 😂

Cupra did 220 miles to a tank and the m140i does about 200 so the cupra is very slightly better on fuel. This is town driving though. On the motorway i’ve found the 140i to actually be better on fuel

Went from a cupra 290 to an m140 so maybe different for the 2 series but the 140 is firstly more expensive for insurance by double for me, however services are cheaper surprisingly, get more mpg, the 140 is a lot more powerful stock, the cupra struggles with wheel hop when accelerating the 140 struggles with wheel spin in the wet, handling wise I think the cupra is better around tight corners but the 140 will walk bus lengths on it in the real world, it's quicker in gear, hooks up better and is a lot faster 0-60, Id advise to drive both and see what you think but the BMW is the better place to be

What if you currently drive a very normal car like a 1.0 fiesta, and love bmw’s because a family member has always owned them but you’ve have never properly driven one; apart from a 320d for 20 minutes. You love the sound of 6 cylinders and a playful chassis but know full well that the M140i is too much car and too big a step coming from a 1.0 fiesta, what hatchback do you pick instead?

I’ve owned an m140i for years, drove 2 m2 comps and tbh i was disappointed.
In the end I went for an m4 comp… being a 2018/18 it has no GPF filter and is ridiculously loud. Carbon roof, adaptive dampers, better interior and HK etc, and costs similar money to a similar used m2 comp
So imo, the answer to these cars is an m4 comp lci.
Just to comment further on the m140 , they’re a cracking car and I’d say around 75% of an m-car. For that extra 25% you’re paying double. The m140i’s feel nothing like a real m. The suspension, chassis, steering, handling, lack of lsd etc. they’re simply nowhere near the feel of a true M , regardless of how good they are.
