I do not own Death Note the Musical or anything to do with it.

As far as the casting differences between the English version and this one, I think it's cultural. In the Japanese version, they did their best to cast what people would recognize as a traditional head-of-the-household strong-willed no-nonsense sort of father. The demo was for American audiences, who would be less likely to recognize the stereotype in the same way an Asian audience would.
Music differences are merely because the English version is technically incomplete, being only a demo.
And yes, I know. We all love Michael Lanning.

Unpopular opinion but I think this version is lyrically so much more significant than the English one, since you can really see how Light's dad was a huge factor in Light's philosophy and him becoming Kira. Meanwhile the only point to the English version is to show Light manipulating his dad which... c'mon everyone already knows he was doing that lol

Seeing all of these comments of people not liking the father’s style of singing kind of breaks my heart as someone who is half Japanese because especially in this song, his voice is _so good_ (I specifically really love the way he sings “mamorinuke”)
I think the main thing is that his way of singing in the musical has some traditional Japanese/enka influences which uses lots of vibrato and pitch changes and that doesn’t really culturally translate over 😓
In the Japanese musical, the style of singing that each actor uses reflects their characters in a beautiful show of symbolism and it’s sad that it goes over so many people’s heads
Yes! I think his voice is impressive and suits the character perfectly, even if it isn't what western audiences consider "good" or "nice to listen to". In both Soichiro and Rem's songs, it's so satisfying to see them use the music style to inform us about the character. Good to see the writers really thought about what they were doing.
Yes! As someone who speaks Japanese and used to live there I love his voice! It’s very traditional and it just feels right. It sounds very natural and I definitely prefer the Japanese version than the English one.

I'm gonna throw this out there: Kaga is a tried and true favorite of Wildhorn's, a popular Jean Valjean and, perhaps most importantly, Soichiro Yagami in the wonderful 2006 live action Death Note films. I think that trifecta is what solidified his place in the cast.
Not gonna lie, I like this version I lot better because of the repeat part.
i see alot of ppl not liking the japanese version. in my opinion, it`s not bad. it`s different. the japanese and english version are so different you cant really compare them. as few ppl already mentioned, the actor for the father decided to take a very traditional approach to the musical and its not terrible. just different, and i can understand why many young fans dislike it.
I find it really hard to accept what Soichiro's actor doing as singing, especially since the English version had such a rock vibe. The actor that replaced him had a voice a lot closer to my liking.

Yes, I agree. Although I do prefer the lyrics of this one, they have a much deeper meaning than the original demo.
Aspie Near Also, the actor who played Soichiro's in the 2017 Japanese production also had a deep voice, which was more suitable for Soichiro's singing parts, this actor's voice is not at all "designed" for songs like this.

It's a traditional singing style in Japan, sorta similar to Sprechstimme in German singing.
I'm torn, because I love the lyrics from the Japanese version (and even the vocals too!) but of course I can't help but prefer the English vocals more.
I like both versions. The english version is more dramatic and the japanese more sad/dramatic. Thank you for sharing the music :)
I like the feeling of these lyrics better, but I don’t think the singer for Sochiro was the best choice. He isn’t a bad singer, but he seems to operatic for what I imagine a father lecturing his son about right/wrong to sound like.
I guess, I've seen it in some other comments, but the singing manner of Soichiro is related to Japanese culture. He sounds like a wise authority figure for a Japanese viewer, but maybe not so much for a Western one.
I've seen many animes showing wise old characters to sound similar to this Soichiro's tone.

It's mostly the actors way of singing, it's a very traditional singing form that fits the character I feel
Wait why was he asking his own son to become a God?
He basically tells his son to become "his very own and only god" instead of believing in a superior being/someone/something; to have his life in his own hands and to not listen to or get influenced by others and stay strong with his own opinions. But while his father does this, Light goes like "Becoming a literal god overwhelming everyone, got it thx dad"

@@ayouxy in the musical for sure XD that's why i like the japanese version of the lyrics so much, it kinda shows how light only follows his parents philosophy but interpreting it in a too specific, twisted way version
