I have to disagree with the "FF 7 fiasco" they simply responded to the modern time, I mean they still kept the turn-based combat. So why is this a fiasco?

Awesome video, and yes I think these sound like the right decisions.
I want to see them go back to classics. The octopath, triangle strategy and DQ games for example. Simple graphics, good stories, fun characters, not everything needs to be super stylized like FF7R or 16.
I'd really love to see them revive Vagrant Story though, seems like that could be special.

OG Bravely Default is easily a top 5 all time RPG for me. I would highly prefer Team Asano be working on a new one, but I would be happy for the gaming community if it could be freed from its 3DS prison.
Other people trashed Bravely Default, but I loved it so much that in spite of the time flips that reset things, I completed the game twice.

I'd personally love to see a Live a Live sequel. That game gave me Chrono Trigger vibes but obviously without the time travel. I love how they tied the whole story together at the end!
It is nice to see remakes but we really can’t call this a golden age since its remakes, I want some golden originals.
David's got the best references even when it's not gaming related. Ginsu knives aren't something I've thought about for, like, at least 25 years. Great video with so much to be hyped about. Hopefully Square can meet most of our expectations.

for FF 9 Remake, I really hope Square Enix will keep its stylized look on the character designs. It is one of the charm of the original game, makes it stand out among other FF titles
That's honestly the biggest guarantee I wouldn''t worry about that at all. I'd be more worried about the production value of the game. It's all cool and all to hear it's turn based and 'not like FF7R' until you realize that this probably means there will be allot of cut corners.
@@mikev8746 I believe it's almost impossible that this is going to be cheap like the Mana remake, because even though the game's art style doesn't demand a realistic style it's still a famous mainline FF game. It's not that high standards strictly mean photorealistic. This is just like comparing amateur low budget cg animation to Disney or Pixar cg animation.
So since this is about a famous mainline game, S.E almost certainly won't neglect a robust budget to FF9R's graphics even though it doesnt need the exact same amount needed for FF7R graphics. It will be a high standards cartoony art style project. (Btw, what also seems to be the ideal style for a possible FF6 remake in the future)
I’m expecting something along the lines of Overwatch graphics with FF9 art style. Requires less budget than photo realism but still looks high production

What a tease, David! You put up a whole video of awesome remakes over the BGM of Xenogears, and I was hoping *that* would be the announcement. Make no mistakes, I'm here for every single game you called out in this vid but for me, personally, I'd trade all of them for a Xenogears remake... @@jimkincaidz Correct. It's probably the greatest JRPG story ever told, and the game - warts and all - is ALREADY a masterpiece. If it could be resourced as heavily as it always deserved, it really would rule them all.

That’s an unnecessary question, the remaster is already available, whatever is taking so long is a remake, no matter how close it may look to the original

@@robcotto7081 True but hearing it's turn based and slightly more budget than Mana is worrying. I think to many purists are just blindly celebrating because SE seems to be throwing them a bone to realize that this also means FF9 could be half assed compared to FF7. Yes it's a remake but the Mana game was also a remake and that looks horrible.
Also, just something low-key to mention the FFIX OST is truly top tier. All the games have Incredibles soundtracks, but I think having remade versions of 9 is going to highlight just how excellent the compositions truly are especially melodically

All super exciting stuff! After getting back into the hobby of videogames a year or so back, and truly falling in love with videogames again, I've been diving into all sorts of JRPG's that I either never finished growing up, or never had the opportunity to play. And both FF9 and the Dragon Quest series have been entering my line of fire for a good while now. Dragon Quest 11 especially is one I've been meaning to get to, but there's just been so many goodies to try and get through haha! So seeing both this potential Dragon Quest HD trilogy and FF9 remake has got me real excited. Great to see you're so pumped for these releases David! Keep up the great content!

I just hope the next Bravely game gets a solidly increased budget from the last one. I was close to loving that game.
I still remember when square made the first Bravery Default and was surprise that it was well received and made money. The same type of game that put them on the map and made them a well known video game company in the first place -_-
Square needs to remake
Final Fantasy 6, Final Fantasy 8, Parasite Eve, Parasite Eve 2, Vagrant Story & Xenosaga.
We are already deep enough into the era of abuse of remakes (or abuse of nostalgia) in gaming and yet you want Square Enix to double/triple down...
I love that you're like me in that you love pre-set character parties and turn-based combat. I'm a Final Fantasy fan, but I love Suikoden, Legend of Heroes, and Wild Arms most. I wish FF8 would get a remake with a revamped battle system (draw who? Me? Like one of your French girls?) and a graphics overhaul. Standalone that NEED remakes are Skies of Arcadia and Arc Rise Fantasia (I still have hearing damage from the OG voice acting). A Shadow Hearts trilogy remake would be snazzy too!
We can get those after we get Fantasian on everything..

I haven't watched the video yet, but in my opinion the best thing they could do is release their entire back catalog for modern consoles. I would love to play some Final Fantasy Tactics or Vagrant Story on my PS5. Illusion of Gaia or EVO on the switch would be amazing. Gonna watch the video now.

I have no faith in Square anymore. They are flagrantly incompetent and creatively bankrupt. The FF 9 remake is bound to be abhorrent. The original is perfect. Let people remember it and play the version when it was in the hands of true geniuses and not some greedy company that peddles NFTs, uses AI in its artistic pursuits, makes crap games, and lies to its fans. Square just needs to go away and never come back.

Id love a SquareSoft collection for PS4/PS5 with games like Vagrant Story, Xenogears, Front Mission 3 or something like that. SquareSoft definitely blew it out of the water back on the PS1 on top of so many other awesome games.

Dragon Quest aka Dragon Warrior #1-3 released on PlayStation 4 would be a killer start and while we’re playing those Square/Enix could be working on #4-6

I’m super excited for all of these classic Square experiences ❤❤❤ I grew up in the glory years myself (both in 86) so to see it all coming back, it’s hard to put into words how happy I feel. But to answer your question of what else could we want?
There are two thing above all others that I want to see return: The Chrono series in the form of a true sequel or an HD-2D remake of the original. More than anything else, I want a Star Ocean Second Story R style remake of Xenogears. They could bring it back and make the second disc what it was originally supposed to be.

I want to see an HD remaster of the “Gaia Trilogy” with additional content built into the games. And I WANT a new epic ActRaiser game that takes full advantage of current gen hardware.
I hope this remake will be good, adds more playable characters(Beatrix, Cid, Lani), has better stat growth(especially HP) for mid to high levels, and many quality of life improvements.

I’d be stoked about all of those, but (and I know it’s a Capcom IP, but I think Square collaborated *please don’t quote me*) a Breath of Fire remake would be slammin’. Super underrated at the time. BoF2 and BoF3 were masterpieces. But FF6 and FF9 would be my next two in that world. Just found you through the RUclipss! As an 80s and 90s kid as well, I love your enthusiasm! Subbing!

It's not brought up enough but Treasure of the Rudras (snes) has been seriously overlooked. Would love a rerelease at least or HD-2D Remake.
I hope they continue this path also. But more in a hybrid between modern FF and old-school turn based games.
FF VII Remake and Rebirth is absolutely fantastic, but at the same time IX, Tactics, DQ , Mana games that are turn based are just as fantastic, so would be nice to have a bit of both to mix it up for me.

The Chrono Cross remaster was already released. It came out in 2022.

One thing to keep in mind is a lot of their money infusion for upgrades will likely be voice acting and interactive backgrounds and not artistic stills.

This is the best news 😍. This year js going to bring me back to my childhood and favourite games that I grew up with. It’s also what I wanted with Square Enix going back to the basic/Classic games that are fun.

Ok, Final Fantasy god damn IX is my all time favorite. I played that game from my 8 years old all the way to my 16s. Hell, I only had the japanese version. It took me forever to finish. I have never played a game with a better story and better characters in mm life.

This is fantastic news! The way @davidvinc feels about FF9 and DQ2.5 is how I would be if they announced a Xenogears remake. I personally would like to see it done like the Star Ocean remakes.
Your enthusiasm is EVERYTHING! It´s exactly how i feeel , despide beeing "old".I love that they are going back to the good things and i sooo can´t wait for esp. FF9. Even my mother who will turn 77 years in 1 month is super exited for the release of FF9 remake. She still plays the OG game since..don´t know how many years XD
FF VI will always be my favorite, however, FF IX is just the tiniest hair behind FF VI. Those are my two favorite FFs and then, there's a pretty large gap between those two and FF X, and then, there's another gap between that and FF VII. Thank goodness Square seems to have become sane again.
The Square-Enix news I'm most excited about right now is the Kingdom Hearts series finally coming to Steam next week. I've been waiting for this ever since it was announced as being Epic exclusive 3+ years ago.
I hope the Final Fantasy IX remake overhauls the Trance mechanic. It had a habit of going off when I needed it the least.

So excited for FF9. It already plays great on PC, especially with the moguri mod, but I can’t wait to see what they decide to do when rebuilding it from the ground up. Hopefully we’ll finally get that FF Tactics remake/remaster next - they did a fantastic job with Tactics Ogre.
Squenix seems to be back, and if Monolith drops their next project at this upcoming direct, it’ll be a killer year for Nintendo.
I’m wondering how Toriyama’s death affects Chrono Trigger’s legal minefield and if it might get easier or more difficult for Square to use those characters and make new CT stuff now.

So looking forward to playing this. Such a great game. I absolutely love Zidane, Vivi, Garnet, Kuja as well as the other characters and I love the story. IMO Zidane is the best FF protagonist and Kuja is one of the greatest FF villains. I hope when someone goes into trance it can carry over to future battles if you dont use it in that battle and I hope its fully voice activated. What are the chances we get a trailer for it at summer game fest?

You can do a lot more without the hair physics tbh. Maybe not jiggle physics but definitely hair physics.

Hair physics are a waste of resources. Sea of stars just uses pixels for hair and puts the resources into dynamic lightning physics. Hair physics should only be considered if there is no other prolem to be solved.

I never got into Bravely Default, I think because it is (or at least was) 3DS exclusive, and I've realized that hunching over a handheld gaming device makes my back hurt. I've got Octopath Traveler in my Steam library, but I haven't played much (well, 8.6 hours apparently, but back in 2020) - I probably got distracted by some other game :D . What would really blow my mind is if they remade/remastered the old Quintet+Enix games like Illusion of Gaia or Robotrek to run on modern consoles and/or PC.
bro like you i LOVE retro FF games! esp FF9 i remember i was in high school and it was one of the last games i played on the original ps1 before i upgraded to ps2 in yr 2000. those were good times! this brings back so many good memories! when Square releases a remake of FF9 on cartridge for swtich i will buy it day 1!

Don't really get what could be that much better about ff9 save for the background resolutions but looking forward to it!
If we get a new FF9. I truly hope its as close to the original as possible, but with better graphics, and maybe some voice acting. but there was a special magic to FF9 and how all of its parts came together. I'm looking forward to whatever Square is cookin up.
Fingers crossed for more news on Fantasian being ported multi-platform. It would be almost a year from hearing any news about it. And of course more Kingdom Hearts news.

Im still not convinced that we are getting the og dq trilogy remade this year. It just seems like something that is too good to be true
0:51 Funny you say that cuz SQEX was gonna stop that series around 9 years ago when FF15 was going to be released and some statement flew around where it was said that if FF15 didn't sell enough that the company would drop their mothership series, because as someone who once worked with that company, it ate a SHITTON of money to an unhealthy degree because of nearly 10 years development, their issues with FF14 1.0, the really unecessary development engine Crystal Tools etc., so yeah, FF16 might have never been a thing if that boyband adventure didn't sell enough for SQEX to care furthermore.
