  • Dialed In and I embark on a torturously technical journey into the SplitRock Wilds. Trail tantrums were had, primal screams of anguish and the occasional profanities reverberated throughout the forest and ultimately, our spirits were murdered. SplitRock Wilds ain’t nothin’ to f@&k with.

    Im a ranger at Split Rock and a rider. This trail is bar none my fav trail in Mn. Itscome a long way in 2 years and has the sickest natural features of any trail. Some i still won't do but want to so bad. Hope you get back here and ride some more!

      Sorry I haven’t given an update, but a couple buddies have. Jeremy (Dialed In) and I went in with the wrong mindset, expecting something more akin to Jackpot with jumps and flow. It was hellaciously hot and humid, my fork wasn’t working and we just did a monster ride the day before if I recall correctly.
      I have since returned and agree that it is an outstanding trail that’s different than anything in the state. It’s also a beautiful area.

      Yeah, definitely not a “family fun” trail as it stands, which is nice to see in all honesty. Advanced riders who are looking to level up have options here. There is more trail in the process of being built so I suspect there will be options for more beginner/intermediate in the future. But yeah, bringing the youngins to whatever I rode could probably be classified as child abuse. Then again, there are some super gnarly micro rippers out there too.

    This is a good vid to have documented; It gives an honest glimpse on what to expect. This is not your standard MN city blue. We should prob do a part 2 going the other direction N-S and maybe bring a first aid kit for the big lines going the other direction.

      Yeah man, let’s activate the rematch clause for sure. We’re 0-1 against this thing but we came in with the wrong strategy, or actually no strategy 😅 Different angle of attack next time and a much better idea of what we’re up against. In editing it definitely appeared we were going against the grain more often than not. I’ll have a full camelback and first aid kit for sure and a flare gun in case we need to get helivac’d out of here 🚁

      You say no thanks now, but it could be a different story in 5 years. That fixed seat post touching the sky and your feet clipped into your 13.875 lb 120mm fully carbon XC rig. The Ridin’ Dirt yellow spandex onesie with one eye on your Garmin power meter and the other on your PR. A huge smile on your face as you tackle yet another uphill rock garden. All of this of course is after you replace that silly “Send It!” tag line with “On Your Left!”. People change man 🤷🏼‍♂️

      No doubt the endurance and technical riding skills of those who make repeat visits here will be forged in hellfire. I think everyone in the state should visit it and if it’s semi-local they should probably be visiting more often. Definitely a trail where people will be forced to push their limits.

    I agree it’s a black diamond rating and is for sure a workout. Amazingly built with all the rock work and it’ll be cool to see what else they add. The cluster of blacks and double blacks at the south side are an awesome ride too and I highly recommend them as well, with suspension though. I rode it there and back starting on the north side and agree its better going north to south!

    • @ElTerrible2011

      Good to hear. It looks like a lot more work is still going into this as we speak. I’m definitely gonna get the full suspension out here North to South but damn dude, props on doing the out & back. That requires some Will and fitness to say the least. 💪🏼

    Reminds me of the Upper Burner Stovetop trail at Piedmont Duluth, but instead of being a trail you suffer through to get to the other fun trails it's the only trail, and you extend it 8 miles!

      @ElTerrible2011  3 года назад

      Lol. It’s rough, no doubt, but it does have it’s moments even in the non-preferred direction. I’ll hold off on a final judgement until I ride it southbound. But yeah, it was hard af. This ain’t no damn flow trail I can guarantee you that 😅

    Any good parking places for this trail? Can’t find much for maps - Trailforks shows the south end stopping in the middle of a forest with no roads around.

      I have a state park pass so I parked in SplitRock State Park. You can then take the Gitchi Gammi trail north up to the dirt road that’s a climb up to the neovision trail entrance. I don’t think it’s too long of a haul. Otherwise look on the lake county mountain bike Facebook page, they had some parking instructions of where to and where NOT to park. Have fun and come prepared.

    Hahaha a criminal network! I love all the rocks man but you and DJ zima ice need to ride it the other way and see how it is. Do you think it would have been more enjoyable on your canyon? Looks like a rad trail, but definitely tests your ability to breath and push through pain. Done if those rock garden going the other direction look like an absolute blast to rip!

    • @ElTerrible2011
      @ElTerrible2011  3 года назад +1

      I’m curious if this would’ve been better on the Spectral honestly. Obviously the descents would have but all the travel with all the tech? 🤔 The Spectral is getting wrenched on so I had to break out the Alaskan. DJ Zima Ice and I already are talking about getting back out here. We figured it’s only an 8 mile two way trail, we’ll just rip it both directions real quick. After all, Jackpot is a 14 mile two way we both did an out n’ back on before so that should be doable, right? Nah but I saw a lot of stuff on the ride and in editing that suggests better flow predominately in the other direction. We underestimated the gnarly nature of this trail and got punished for it. Closest thing I can think of is McDonald Pass in Helena, Montana. You’re in for a legit big mountain workout if you follow in our footsteps here.

    • @KeanuSwayze
      @KeanuSwayze 3 года назад +1

      In my experience, more tire is more helpful than more travel for stuff like this. Fat bike might be the way to go. But I am just a simple, aging Chad.

    • @Tkolbo_
      @Tkolbo_ 3 года назад +2

      @@KeanuSwayze so I’m not suggesting more travel would be helpful, but a well setup rear suspension allows the rear tire to track the terrain better and get less “hardtail skip” on technical rocky stuff which allows for more stability in technical climbs and helps manage fatigue a little better that way too. Does that make sense? A larger tire is helpful too for sure. I think the real issue here is the length and rise of the stem

    • @KeanuSwayze
      @KeanuSwayze 3 года назад +2

      @@Tkolbo_ Agree for sure on both points. Maybe a full sus plus bike would actually be useful here. And yeah, not having a road bike stem on your bike. Of course if we believe the bike industry, what we all need is a mullet bike. I am setting my bike up with a 55er from a penny farthing on the front and a 20" BMX wheel in the back. So, serious question. I am looking to stay up in "NorMinn" this September to ride some of these trails north of Duluth. But looking at the map, its still ~2 hours between Red Head and Jackpot. Any suggestions on the best place to stay (~5 days) and which trails should be priority? I definitely want to ride Jackpot, but beyond that I am open to suggestions.

    • @ElTerrible2011
      @ElTerrible2011  3 года назад +1

      Tough one. I honestly think your best bet is to probably stay at two different places during the trip. In terms of pure fun I think Jackpot and Giants Ridge should be priority. It should also be noted Giants, despite being a lift access bike park also cut the ribbon on like 10+ miles of XC. Redhead has good riding also and stellar scenery. If you started Northwest there’s Tioga which is my favorite Iron Range system. Maybe set out northwest and stay in Grand Rapids, hit Tioga. Head East the next day, hit redhead, then break for Biwabik afterwards and stay at Giants Ridge. Ride there and recover from all the climbing by hitting exclusively downhill. Next morning now that you’re recovered head to Jackpot to finish it off. That would be pretty killer.

    • @misterfrank98
      @misterfrank98 3 года назад

      It’s at least 2 hours to jackpot from redhead. More like 2.5.
      Jackpot is great, so is redhead. Lookout mountain just north of Virginia has 9 miles of handbuilt singletrack and also the trails at Giant ridge are fun. Maple Hill in Hibbing has 5 miles XC. You could stay at the ridge after riding but there isn’t much in between there and Silver Bay to stay

What I enjoyed most was hauling ass on flat single track on the SL which is more dangerous than some descents.
