I have worked with concept generation for a long time. If you want more ideas from your team you need to do 2 things. 1. Make sure you don't get 'punished' for having an idea. This happens more than you think i.e. OK - 'go and do it then' which puts people in a bind. You must incentivize - can be money (not the main motivator), can be a pat on the back, can be support / opportunity to help them implement it and develop. Ensure the person or team who had the idea is recognized and people will want to do it more. 2. Asking for 'any ideas' is a WASTE of time. You have to give specific context and this takes work by the meeting lead. Be specific - what is the problem, what area, what are the restrictions, whats been tried etc. Ironically - the more open ended restrictions you add the more creative peoples minds are. i.e. Doing a single jigsaw can be fun - but attempting to do 5 jigsaws at once is a total muddle.
Just listened to this and such great advice. Whilst listening to the section about employees contributing- research the Toyota way. The way the do business and involve the employees asking for ideas on how to improve things. GM took it on when Toyota came to America.
