  • Join us on Via Rail Canada vacation Montreal to Vancouver. We had an excellent time in the Upper/Lower Berth and we met lots of great passengers and locals along the way.
Passengers on the Canadian can choose from economy class, upper and lower berths, cabin for 1, cabin for 2 and prestige class.
Our journey started at Montreal and we ended at Vancouver Pacific Central Station.
We loved the park car and the views from the dome car on the train were spectacular. The meals in the dining car were among our favorites on a train. In the park car refreshments were served most of the day.
During our trip we got to see snow capped mountains which was a real treat. We also got time to walk around in Edmonton, Winnipeg and Jasper.

Most of the comments seem to be about trains, but to answer your question about the 1976 Winter Olympics. It was special to us in the UK when John Curry won the men's Figure Skating gold medal and changed the whole concept of skating forever. He paved the way for the transition from just pure technical ability to skating as an art form.

Passenger trains in North America before Amtrak used to have a dozen or more mail cars on their consists. Unfortunately the USPS terminated all of their railroad mail contracts when they chose to FLY the mail instead, the motto was hours instead of days... This was snail mail... And folks today wonder why the railroad operating what is presently the northeast corridor went bankrupt? While riding Amtrak or Via maybe slower than flying, you do get to see the country, not fly over it...

In answer to your question, I don’t care for Everything bagels. My favorites are cinnamon raisin and blueberry. Cinnamon raisin with butter and cream cheese. There’s something about the tangy cream cheese with the cinnamon and raisins. Blueberry bagels with just butter. And they always have to be toasted. Yum!

It starts in Toronto. The train between Montreal and Toronto if I am correct is called part of the Corridor trains.

I loved the Olympics on regular TV! Only topped by being there in person (L.A.). They all get jumbled up now, so I had to cheat... Bruce Jenner, Leon Spinks, Sugar Ray L, but for me Nadia C with those 10s, and Greg Louganis with those dives!
Gotta admit, I'm not a huge fan of music on the vids. I miss the train sounds. I guess that's tricky if you want to chat! I also like the voice-overs. I greatly appreciate the captions with cities and info! The views are always wonderful! Interesting how the observation/park car is rows of seating instead of facing out.
Rare moment...I agreed with Allie on a food! Fish tacos over chorizo. Now to finish the video!

I'm amazed at how ViiaRail has kept these vintage (65+y/o) cars in such great working condition. There are a few of these cars in the U.S. that are privately owned, but they're for charter & are incredibly expensive. People may complain ViaRail's sleeper car fares are expensive, but it's worth trying at least once. The observation dome car (Park Car) is usually found at the rear of trains & offer the best views. My guess is it probably requires a lot of switching to place them where they need to be. There weren't many built & are a huge draw for train enthusiasts worldwide.

Hello both. This brought some memories of a trip I made on the Canadian 25 years ago. I did this with a tour company based in the UK. We landed in Ottawa, our first trip by train was to Toronto from Ottawa. Via rail ran out of food for mid day meal so they rung ahead and we had fast food delivered one stop later. After a couple of days in Toronto we took the Canadian to Jasper. I remember toping at Sioux Lookout and the loco was refuelled there. We stopped and got off at Jasper, luckily it was Canada’s celebration day so we saw plenty of fireworks. I was in Silver Class as it was known then. After a break in Jasper we caught the train to Prince Rupert with a hotel stop in Prince George. After one night in Prince Rupert and then the ferry to Port Hardy on Vancouver Island. After a break in Victoria it was on the island ferry to Vancouver airport and the trip home.
Would love to do this in winter rather than summer, health stops me I’m afraid.

Been trying to add this to my itinerary for a few years. It has been since 1982 when my grandmother took me on a cross country train trip from Cleveland to Seattle to visit her sister, brother-in-law, and my cousins. It has been 41 years and I still remember it like yesterday. Heard so many wonderful things about Vancouver and I definitely want to explore the West Edmonton Mall and stay at the Fantasyland Hotel attached to it.

Great Video from my favorite team....Planning a trip starting in Nova Scotia on The Ocean train going west to Montreal, then to Vancouver on The Canadian. Winter will be our time for travel based on availability of the class of service we have elected. So, your videos are fundamental for our planning...You're the greatest...Thanks so much.

I love watching you guys travel and I love trains. You are so careful to show us everything. I would enjoy traveling also but I am a senior on a fixed income. But I am saving up to go to Canada.

When did one end destination of the Canadian train change from Toronto to Montreal? I took it decades ago when it ran between Vancouver and Toronto. Memorable trip. Have never heard they changed the easterly destination?
