Since you used random scraps to make this billet, you should call it unobtainium, since you can never make an exact replication! Tony Stark will still be interested! Great video, Glen!

I figured I needed to try using the billet since it was the first I created. Others have said I should etch the blade and it never occurred to me to even try that, that it was even possible. More hairy leg vision to follow. Thanks.

I know that (good) knives really require a certain skillset / personality that I don't possess. But I'm making baby steps and honestly my wife using a couple of the more practical knives I made on a daily basis has given me confidence, a necessary ingredient... Thanks.

You may want to drop the steel into a cup of strong instant coffee to etch it. That'll really bring out the Damascus pattern!
While I'm aware of etching, I really had no idea that this little blade could be etched to reveal a pattern - it being the first piece of "Damascus" that I ever created. I'm assuming I can dunk it in the instant coffee even now? I may try this since this is basically an experiment. Thanks my friend for the good suggestion.

Yes, you can set it in the coffee now. I'd go fifteen minutes at a time, just to prevent etching too deep.

Not too shabby for a first go. have a go at trying a small sharp hot set chisel and put a thumbnail groove at the top of the blade to assist in opening the knife. I agree with the viewer who suggested a carbide drill bit for the hole, they will even drill through a file. Great little knife, make some more.
Yeah, this really needs the thumbnail groove otherwise I'm hesitant to close all the way. I really need to try concrete drills on hardened steel. Thanks Stephen.

I found cheap carbide tipped concrete drill bits work well on hard tough steel
I discovered this when trying to enlarge the pritchell hole in my small anvil

I agree about stropping angle - it's common advice to maintain the same angle, and of course an excessive angle rounds the edge more - but deburring is most effective if a slight increase in angle (about 1-2°) is used.

Knife sharpening is something rather personal, everyone has an opinion and like backsides we all have one. In my opinion there is no right or wrong, only the result counts, how you get there is of no consequence.
No doubt about it each person has his or her own way when it comes to sharpening. I've just gotten better results with a steeper final honing angle but this also depends on the blade and some other factors. Thanks.

What is the point of forge welding different steels in a bullet and making a knife out of it when You don´t reveal the texture by acid etching at the end? Also, not being able to fold the knife all the way down and hide the sharp tip could be very dangerous in use... Sorry for the criticism but I mean it well. I hope You consider it constructive on your way to becoming a better knife maker...
Hi, I can fold the knife all the way down but since I hadn't yet put a thumbnail groove in the blade, it would be hard to open. As for the forge welded piece of steel I created, I never made Damascus before and don't really know (I have an idea) how to etch. This was really just a test and I like showing my experiments, even semi-failures. And I don't mind constructive criticism at all. Thanks for sharing.
@@gstongs OK, well, standard precedure for etching is to mix 1:10 feric chloride with water and let the knife sit in it for couple of minutes. Then wash in water. Finaly, you can put it in a very strong solution of instant coffee to enhance the contrast 🙂
My only disapointment was that you didn't etch the blade. After all what's the point of making pattern welded steel if you can't see the pattern? 😀
Hi vern, you're the third or fourth person to say that. Quite honestly, I didn't even know that was possible since this was only the first piece of "Damascus" I ever created and I thought subsequent folding and fire welding was needed to create a pattern. I'll try etching soon. Thanks.
