Oz | A Symphony of Brutality | Season 2 Review

  • Oz is a HBO drama that was the network's first 1 hour episode series, a precursor to the likes of The Sopranos and Game of Thrones. This is my review of season 2.
Oz is praised for a great many reasons. For a TV show, especially one that first aired in 1997, it highly realistic in its depiction of prison life. I’ve seen loads of crime films and prison movies, and even still, more than 20 years later, the first season of Oz really leaves an impact with just how profane it is. The language, the violence depicted, the disregard for the value of human life by inmates and guards alike. I can only imagine how shocking it must have been back in the 90s, and the boundaries it pushed allowed other shows to pioneer and perfect the craft.
In season 2, the son of the seasoned Italian mobster from the first season arrives at Emerald City, wanting to take over from his father’s operation and avenge his death. There’s continued tension with Beecher and Schillinger, with the latter catching a dastardly plot to torture the former. Adebisi exchanges love letters with a woman on death row while having his connection with his homeland stimulated by a mysterious new inmate. Saeed battles a desire for freedom with his loyalty to his men when he is selected to be granted clemency, and Augustus becomes obsessed with escape after he has false hope of release dangled in front of him. There’s a lot of different stuff happening.
Some of the main characters are Tobias Beecher, Vern Schillinger, and Kareem Said.

Just rewatched the first episode of Season 1. That first season really hasn’t aged as badly as I would have assumed. It was still intense and gripping and even though I knew Dino’s death was coming, it was still a shock due to all the focus they gave him as a lifer. I try to tell as many people about Oz as possible. The first two seasons still hit just as hard as if it were Boardwalk Empire or Sopranos.

All that was in season two. Sheesh , abs there's still so much more to go. Ya'll remember what Jaz and them did to the Preacher. Shubetta Jr and his unwanted lover. The shit show on a weight bench. There's so much left.
Oz writers were very creative with their assaults and death in the show. Brutal even by today's standards.

This was a time when HBO decided to push the boundaries, It was the 90's, every network was doing it but HBO realized they could go further than anyone, sometimes it worked, sometimes not so much.

They already had the freedom to do whatever they wanted since they were pay tv and to draw in the audience they started doing shows with nudity/violence/topics that wouldn't fly on network tv. Cinemax and Showtime had mostly softcore stuff while Hbo was all in on shows - DreamOn, Arliss, OZ, Sopranos, Sex&The City...

Oz is one of those shows that cares WAY more about characters than about plot. This becomes even more evident as the series as goes on, and more eyebrow-raising storylines come about. It’s really the characters that you keep you going in this series.

Yeah. I definitely agree with that. There's way too much going on. Especially for prison, especially in comparison to real prison. Any convicts will tell you, most of jail is boring AF....The writers have even went on record saying attacks/grapes were actually just punishment for actors not doing what they were supposed to. Whether it made sense story wise or not.

If a real life prison was as violent as OZ, they'd be on permanent lock down. They had more murders in a month than most prisons have in a decade. As a, highly fictionalised, critique of America's correctional system, it had it's merits though. There was never a dull moment, that's for sure.

Schillenger loathed Beecher and wanted to make his life a living hell. He does so out of jealousy, hatred and self loathing. Plus Beecher was unaffiliated and therefore an easy target to screw with.
Beecher was the opposite of Schillenger, a rich white liberal given every opportunity to succeed in life and still messed up, ofc there's the Aryan angle of punishing him for killing a white girl. His only plan was to torment and humiliate Beecher at every opportunity. There was no plan expect for the current one set in motion.

It's supposed to be chaotic, jarring, breakneck in pace, absurd, and surreal, that's exactly how it accurately portrays much of how it feels to be incarcerated despite being technically insanely inaccurate.
Another thing they do repeatedly, ya rarely know what it is or isn't true and who can or can't be trusted. Like the situation with Beecher's wife, there's a ton of uncertainty where it's almost 50/50 between her taking her own life or Vern sending people to do it to her. We never know, we never find out anything really and only the question remains. There's just nothing else like it, no other show would leave this much up in the air and uncertain.

I saw Oz in my twenties in 2014 as a former oxy addict just turned heroin addict. I had a warrant that I had to get an attorney to find out for me and since I was a heroin addict I didn’t want to go to jail withdrawing.
I was in fear daily watching that show as to what would happen to me once I actually got to jail, not prison.
I was only in there for a day and it was one of the worst jails in the US and I did withdraw the whole time but obviously it was nothing like Oz.
My only complaint about Oz is how unrealistic everything is. From the brutality of the deaths, to how exaggerated, brutal and consistent the deaths are. Even how easily people are able to quit “tits” or heroin is just ridiculously unrealistic.
It is entertaining though and it’s by far the most violent show in the history of television. The show peaks at around between seasons 3-4 IMO.
