  • Across the country, “porch pirates” are stealing people’s packages right from their doorsteps. In the last year, 79% of Americans had a package stolen, a problem most severe in California’s Bay Area. That’s why Campbell, California police, like many departments across the country, are putting GPS tracking devices inside bait packages to track down thieves.

they have, but I guess it hasn't been that much of a deterrent. One woman received around 24 years in prison for stealing packages from porches. I thought it was excessive punishment (and it will cost tax payers millions to house her in prison). And then what? She will be forced to steal after getting out again (when no one will hire you). There are other forms of punishment for crimes like this, like spending some jail time (like weekends in jail for an extended period), and then doing a very long stretch of community service (like years if needed), and they don't complete community service, then putting them in prison for 2 year stretches (but 20 years is absurd).

I once gave an old Bible to a friend. It had my name and phone number on the blank page just inside the front cover. Some while later someone broke into his wife's car and stole her bag, which had the Bible in it. A few days later a lady called me and said she found the bag with the Bible and some of their kids' school supplies on the side of the road and called me because she found my number in the Bible. Obviously the valuables were gone, but at least he got the Bible back and his wife got her bag back.
When I told one of my coworkers that story, he came back with an even better story. He found a Bible on the ground somewhere, and it had either a phone number or address in it. He was going to return it, but then he found drugs hidden between some of the pages, so he just put it back where he found it and walked away.

I live in Campbell CA and silicon valley as a whole, has lots of porch pirates. First off, we are the most affluent area in the country - with highest wages and highest home prices. So porch pirates from all over tend to congregate here - thinking we have nice stuff. But in my neighborhood, porch pirating is non existent. Mainly because we've formed a neighborhood watch. We got each other's phone # and when we see something being delivered, we alert the owners. If they can't be there in a timely manner, one of the neighbors grabs the package and keeps it with them until the owner comes home. Again, we no longer have porch pirate in our neighborhood.

One of the biggest issues with Amazon packages , is that 7 out of 10 times , they never knock , never ring the bell . Leave the package on the door step, & say occupant received the delivery .
I know this , because I get deliveries to my folks place . My folks are always at home , due to the fact my dad's in his 80s , and my mum isn't in good health these days .
They have a ring door bell ,. As well as a normal door knocker . Yet the last 4 deliveries which have been dropped off , have all just been delivered with absolutely no attempt to make sure the item was properly delivered .
My folks road is quiet , pretty respectable part of town , yet because of the delivery issues , it's now starting to attract door step robberies , due to this failing from primarily Amazon .
So it doesn't excuse theft , Amazon is creating an environment, where these thieves are able to operate .
Amazon could play a major part in preventative measures , by rewarding delivery drivers by paying a bonus for every delivery which is genuinely handed to the person who has made a purchase .

Oh, then you don't know . . . In my area, and others, delivery people (UPS, FedEx, Amazon) just leave your package in front of the door (if they even have the right door). The delivery person signs your name without your permission, and you are blessed if he or she rings your doorbell before scurrying off. So that 3 bucks is wasted if it's coming to me. COVID made the matter more extensive. Not sure if USPS asks for the signature, but they're more likely to get your package to the correct address.

Two things - the police here did the same thing. They caught many thieves with most being already known to them (prolific records for petty theft etc). But it did cut down on it. They are running it again right now because of the season. Second thing is the delivery companies need to tell their employees to actually knock or ring the bell after dropping the package. So many times they deliver it but you never know till looking hours later because they couldn't take two seconds to ring the bell to alert you. Amazon being the worst and Fedex being pretty good.

Well, Before I get the police involved, I plan to do as much as I can! So, I’m installing a ubiquity camera system that records audio and video 24/7. I also have reflective warning signs that say the premises is protected by an audio and recording. Additionally, I plan to have cameras or trails cams set up to catch license plates coming and going around my property.
Aside from having cameras and signs, I have already installed driveway alarms to watch walkways to wear the deliveries will be set. Furthermore, I have the additional alarms watching my driveway for vehicles pulling in, so I am alerted if I or family is home.
I would say that your mileage may vary with my ideas, it is possible to use other brands of cameras and trails cameras. The position of cameras could help, But I would make sure to check local rules and regulations before installing them in case you suddenly have a problem with a neighbor.
I agree that using a secure location or having packages delivered to local businesses that work with package delivery services. Moreover, people shouldn’t forget that package delivery services have the option to hold or reschedule deliveries.
Remember, catching the package thieves is important. But it’s depends on the local law enforcement to bust them, so I wouldn’t take matters into your hands unless they are on your property trespassing and have a package in hand, caught in the act so to say. You don’t want a bigger issue to arise because you acted and hurt the person, and they try to turn it around you assaulted them.
