Most drownings happen in lakes rivers and the ocean. You can be Michael Phelps and the ocean lakes and rivers will take your life. Currents are faster than an Olympic swimmer and they have more stamina. Stay close to shore have a floatation device like a surf board with leash or life jacket on. I am an excellent swimmer but almost drowned in Folsom lake because I swam out too far by myself and out of hearing range when both of my hamstrings decided to cramp on me. I grew up swimming in pools every summer from before I could walk. Not panicking saved my life but I had a few seconds of panic....I had to inflate my lungs to float flat on my back while flexing my quads as hard as I could to counteract the cramping. my legs were useless i had to backstroke my arms to get back to shore. If I had not had so much experience in water I would have drowned. I was stupid to not use the buddy system or have a life jacket on. If I were in the ocean, waves probably would have made it very difficult to survive. I have since become an advanced scuba Diver.... Never underestimate the ocean or any natural body of water to take you in an instant. use the buddy system have backups/redundancy and flotation device redundancy. BCD's fail too, I had a valve fail on me once and I was negatively buoyant. luckily I was close to the boat and could hold on instead of ditching my weight. In the future I plan on having an extra inflatable device/bag for redundancy in buoyancy control. If you can't swim or have training you have no business going into a lake river or ocean. Even if you can swim and have training you need to realize you are not above the danger. make sure there is a lifeguard on the beach you swim at and use a lifejacket or emergency inflatable PFD.
