Our dogs collar slips off their head they walk away looking back at you like "Who are you" end up chasing them down the street. This is after having them for over 13 years. I think we could train them to be off leash if we lived somewhere wasn't cars racing up our street at 50 mph. One of the benefits living in smaller towns. Although my In-laws lost lot of dogs that would get up on the highway.

For the battery charging: I'd either add a 7-pin hitch connector or a custom power feed from the vehicle's 12v system. The solar charging is a good idea but it's not going to push a lot of amps unless you get a fairly large panel. So if it gets low because it's doing a bunch of jobs you might run it down and not be able to charge it fast enough. Plus you guys thrash those trailers around and a fragile glass panel will probably end up being a casualty.

A 7 pin connector will not carry much more than 10Amps.
But large wires (at leat 6ga) conncted to a 50A Anderson plug would supply enough amps top keep the battery full charge. Assuming the alternator can supply the amount of current.

Although their solar panel idea may do a better job since it can slow charge while the trailer sits unused and actually top it off over time, Rather than only charging when a vehicle is running, since the winch does pull a LOT of power from a battery.
Both methods would benefit from a charge after heavy use, which is easier said than done at a businesses.

    • @NBSV1

@@jeffland7217 Ideally you also need a charge controller so it doesn’t try to pull to much current if the trailer battery is dead, or when they use the winch. Usually the aux circuit on a 7 pin is only about 15-20 amps.

Had a thought in regards to the trailer charging situation. Though a solar charger would work, something I’ve used is the same on my wrecker, is the rear jump lead points. A large two-prong receptacle that could terminate either directly on the winch and be connected / disconnected with the trailer, or to a separate battery on the trailer.
Our service truck has something similar as we have a winch on a hitch mount that we can swap from front to rear, and still have power. Hope this helps

Have you guys ever considered running large cable (8ag+) and an Anderson Plug to the back of yoru vehicles to charge the trailers. It's very common here in Australia, I know a winch consumes more power than that will provide however the trailer battery will work like a large capacitor in the system to discharge and charge again when travelling.

  • @ExperiencesAndEquipment
    @ExperiencesAndEquipment Год назад

For charging the battery for the winch on a trailer. Look up an Anderson plug. You can run a line from the truck battery to the rear bumper, then have a jumper from the trailer to the truck.
We use them on dump trailers at work.

      Not a good idea!

      Use a dedicated wire.

    • @-Master_Of_Disaster
      @-Master_Of_Disaster Год назад +2

Don't do that, the wires for the lights aren't made to charge a battery and you'll blow the fuse constantly.
You need a bigger wire cross section or your car has a good chance to go up in flames if you are stupid enough to replace the blown original fuse with a bigger one.

I love the connection between the vehicle and the trailer! I love watching the videos, too. I watch for the dogs running in the desert. They are so happy. I have had similar trouble with nosey people. My dogs like to dig a hole, lay in it, and let the snow cover them. We have a 4' x 8' dog house with heated water and all the food they can eat. They are self-feeders. Someone called animal control. They came out to make sure the animals were being cared for. The officer said it was one of the better layouts she had ever seen. We were given a clean bill. I just wish people would mind their own business.

I had bought a used 20’ landscaping trailer dual axle and the front of the welds on the hitch dropped . So , I still had to finish mowing and then take it to a trailer repair shop.
I used 2 straps , the kind like yall used and some chains and regular rope that I wound three times .
It worked and I was only inches from the street .
So , yeah , it worked.

As with all the recovery guys out there, you get your share of difficulties, and you handle it well. Hats off to your creativity.
A little tip to make your life easier, Tom will understand this: Put a high current diode between the tail light wire and the battery to keep it charged while you are traveling. OR you could pull an independent wire from your trailer connector that has switched power from the ignition. No messing with solar panels that will get broken or beat up during rescues. All your vehicles should have the same connector anyway so it a win - win for any vehicle and any trailer with a winch. Be well my friends and keep us awestruck with your talent.

Just a suggestion, get a split charge (voltage controlled relay) fit it between the Tow vehicles start battery through a circuit breaker through to the trailer with a 50 or 100 amp cable and Anderson plug ( now commonly used to charge caravan batteries while on the road. Then on to the trailers winch battery, means while you are getting to or from the job, night or day, the winch battery is getting charged, far better than solar. The system will keep the batteries coupled and jointly charging until the voltage in the system drops to 13.8V or you turn the tow vehicle off (small relay fitted to the switches earth)

For charging trailer winch batteries I ran cable to rear of truck & terminated with electric forklift style plug. GROTE 849633 is part # I used good for 175 amp with 2gauge wire. Would cost a bit to outfit up front but once installed on truck(s) & trailer(s) it's so convenient charging while you drive or if battery is dead just run winch off the truck. With your application of off road service might pay to put hydraulic hose sheathing over cables for extended life. Just a thought, I'm sure you've already considered something similar. Thanks for the entertaining videos.
