One of my absolute fav improv tips that may help anyone reading this is to either dance based upon the nuance and effects of the artist's voice if dancing to a song with lyrics. This really helps me to connect with the song more while also challenging me to move along to a singer's runs or hums. I also love dancing as if I am a certain object. For instance, I once chose to dance like a water bottle, which sounds weird but it worked! I have a mix of fluidity and stiff movement to contrast the physical bottle from what it's containing. This helped me to explore a broader range of motion while also making myself analyze what object I chose as I physically embodied it.
Since there isn’t any :) 1. 2:15 Set your intention (make sure nothing distracted, feel peaceful, set your proper positive mentality) 2. 3:43 React to music (don’t anticipate) make the music flow you, move you 3. 4:42 Speed (slow down, pick a slow song) 4. 5:09 Try to dance to songs you’re familiar with (challenge yourself to dance to song you’ve never heard before) 5. Focus ( where your eyes are, who you’re looking at) 6. 7:10 Conceptualize and visualize 7. 8:38 Get comfortable in your own skin
7:50 about visualising - this is SOOO GOOOD thank you so much! I visualise name-like movements a lot when I am dancing to certain music. But now, I can start imagining other cool scenarios - plants or other animals or warriors ... ( fits different dance styles differently) . So simple yet effective. THAMK YOU FOR SHARING! LOVE YOUR DANCING!
One have done in class is spelling your name as you dance. A partner improv is where one person improvs until the music pauses, and they trade places. So, the person who wasn’t dancing will resume the improv with the last pose the first person ended. Another one, for a group. So, the teacher comes up with a theme or a storyline and the group of 7-10 or so will portray that. The groups may discuss characters, and plot before the song is played.
This was so helpful! Could you elaborate sometime on how to not anticipate? I’m new and do this a lot and am trying to work on it but don’t quite get how
I really struggle with creativity while improv, I just do the same combinations over and over again, any tips how to try something new/ get out of my own box?
Hey, just an idea but maybe you can explore different levels, for example, you could try dancing to a whole piece of music on the floor, and maybe you can explore space as well such as imagining you are trapped in a confined space in oppose to being in a large open space. Hope this helps, good luck on your journey !!
I'm thinking about doing an improv dance at my next dance competition and I don't know what I should do! Hopefully this will help, but I'm super nervous :(
@@Sometimesijust993 Heyy, if you usually tend to move your arms around the space maybe you could try placing them on different body parts such as sliding them along your arms or legs etc. Also, if you would like to focus attention on a specific part of your body, maybe your foot movements, you could hide your arms behind your body or rest your hands on your hips. These are just some ideas, hope this helps !!
