My issue is, I cant stop doing ballet, I cant let go of the strict technique, so all my improv looks the same and too ballet like, even in contemporary classes
What I like doing for that is turn on a song and put your feet in a wide stance and try to improv without moving your feet it helps you work on little things like arms
I suggest you learn other completely different dance styles like hip hop, so that you can learn to move freely and feel the song without using technique. Contemporary uses a lot of ballet movements, making it difficult for you to improvise without ballet. Even if you don't like hip hop, those kinds of less technical styles will help you improvise better, have a greater perspective and ultimately, be a more complete dancer :) Give a try

I have tried really hard to get out of my comfort zone and just do it, but these things still make it so difficult for me. My teacher also gives us zero pointers and just goes IMPROV! I wish sometimes that she would give us a goal for it instead of just yelling it out such as like giving us like a substance or a character or a story. I feel like those pointers help so much. hi! i focus on contemporary but u take ballet as well, ik it can be hard but try taking a private or learning some jazz or contemporary. combos online

What I do is if I ever go blank I always have atleast one Eight count of choreo that I previously prepared and I do that to start me up again
