Recently did a hand wired version. Took me about 2 to 3 days to get used to (but I'm a toch typist). I really prefer the iris over the ergodox layout :D
Great video build log. You're making it easier for me to finally build mine. But you're making it difficult for me to come up with a video that can add anything to this one. I thought you were going to drop it around 10 minutes in :) You've a couple of keys upside down there. モ and ミ are the ones I noticed.
Crazy! This is piece for piece what I was originally thinking of doing for my Iris build! Typing on it now with 70 g Aliaz Silent Tactiles and SA 1976. Probably watched this video 20 times waiting to get it all in the mail :).
I've been lurking here for quite some time. Finally you built a split ergonomic keyboard, my kind of keyboard :) . Looking at the form of your hands, you need a wrist rest to lift your whole hand to be able to type properly on high inclination tenting kit. I personally use an Ergodox EZ, and it changed my view on the "mechanical keyboard" world down to it's very base. Now, all I see on a keyboard are: 1. Does it support QMK? 2. Does it support some kind of Layering? 3. Does it support some kind of Momentary/Direct/Tap-Hold Layer switching? 4. Does it support Dual/N-th Function keys? 5. Does it support Tap Dance like feature? 6. Does it enable me to define MY OWN custom Layout with many layers in it? 7. Does it support Mouse keys emulation? 8. Is it a split keyboard? If it checks at least 50% of the features, then I will consider it. Any less is unacceptable. Btw, you should try and modify the keymap.c file manually to get the maximum benefit of having QMK. Great video, keep up the great work !! Damir.
It's really nice build. Could u make comparison zilents (if possible not only 62g) with aliaz and some popular tactile switches? And it'll be interesting to get ur opinion about Ultimate Hacking Keyboard and compare it vs other ortholinear ergonomic keyboards.
Great video man but can you make Laser_ninja hurry up with the rev 3 kits! Feel like I been eating forever..😭👴💀 Is there any way I can get updates on the progress rather than just checking the website ever other week?
i like your vids man. great work keep on..doing..making production closer to humanity.. btw why dont you make these wireless? with a ton of battery life?
Thumb keys seem to be in weird locations. Inner one would require you to fold the thumb under your palm, outer ones seem poorly angled, and top one would require a twist of the wrist to reach?
Hey, i would like if you would discuss the price of the builds you make. because that is always one of the most asked questions. and say if you think if its worth it. i know maybe you do that but i watched the whole video but couldnt find any information about the product.
Nice job! I'm building mine too, but the pro micro has to flipped on the other side of the keyboard right? Doesnt matter if it is the slave or master side?
Finally received and build my Iris keyboard because of you, but I have a major issue: I can't flash my pro micros. I tried 2 different computers with Windows and Linux on both of them but I cannot get them flashed no matter what I do.... I hope your video on the flashing process will help me, maybe I am doing something wrong, but everything worked first time on my DZ60 with QMK... really weird
Well... Nevermind, after over 3 hours of trying everything out, I finally tried the MSYS2 method on my windows machine. And it just worked :p Now I have 2 working Pro Micros flashed with the default firmware
I do not own the iris but yes you can. But, you need to know how to wire the rows and columns together, if you do not know how it could take you a bit of time to find that out.
Yes, if you type a lot, like if you were a writer, coder, lawyer, typist etc. It's still very nice to use one even though you don't type that much. Currently, nerve damage from long term carpal tunnel syndrome is irreversible. So I consider this a cheap insurance against it.
I use an ergodox EZ and I would say it's totally worth it! Honestly, the most difficult part to get used to was the ortholinear layout. It's so much more comfortable for extended use, though.
Hmm, without the keycaps, 1 Iris would have been about 70+USD (rough est). The keycaps add a lot to that price, although there are many cheap keycaps out there.
I guess this is as good place as any to ask - why does some PCBs (like ths keeb.io ones) require diodes and some (like the katana60 from candykeys) does not?
This doesn't have components pre-soldered - as it is a bare PCB. We even need to mount the controller onto this keyboard (Pro Micro). Therefore they can be sold at a cheaper price. The Katana60 and many other PCBs will already have the diodes, resistors, controller, and whatever else all already soldered on the PCB. So in the end, they still pretty much have the same stuff.
Hey it's laser_ninja here, Tae has updated the description with a link to my site. You can also reach me on discord - Ninja#5071. Not selling any at the moment but I will be opening it up again in the future. Thanks for looking!
Kennui Muffins Hi there. Since you’re not selling your cases right now I’m hoping you can tell me what the rubber feet on the ends of the tenting spacer rods are called so I can search for a buy some. I have the stainless steel case plates and I’m going to drill extra holes to add tenting rods, but I can’t find those really cool feet anywhere. I also can’t find a kit with an assortment of rod lengths, but I at least know what the rods are called to look around for an assorted size kit. FWIW, I’ve seen your case show up in a couple videos now and it looks really awesome. I totally would have just bought your case if I had been able to.
Hey Bill, those rubber feet are 3M hemisphere about 11x5mm (don't have the code on me). The rods are aluminium standoffs and you can find them in all kinds of lengths and colours. The foot portion are aluminium thumscrews that have a diameter of 11mm (most are 10mm which will mean the rubber feet overhang). Next sale will be early 2019 and there will be a never version of Iris PCBs that are fully assembled so you only need to solder on switches, as well as some new features and improvements.
Would have been great if you can merge the keyboard whenever you want to, because there are times that it will be necessary like when playing games that require many buttons to use. But overall this looks awesome.
Hey! Just finished watching the Vid. Awesome! I have a quick question if I can.. I am just finishing off my Iris board and want to put Switch Leds in. I need to buy resistors from my local Jaycar I was wondering if these are ok? www.jaycar.com.au/4-7k-ohm-0-5-watt-metal-film-resistors-pack-of-8/p/RR0588 - also how many do I need if you know?
It's pointless to get an ergonomic keyboard then let your wrists bend like that. It's about the worst thing u can do. Hopefully your technique is better 3 years later
Pro tip - If you don't want to sound like an _idiot_ simply call TRRS _four-pole phone._ Rolls off the tongue better than an acronym. TRS for _three-pole,_ TS for _two-pole_ (usually microphone or power-only), and for TRRRS, _five-pole._
Hey great job. Just a heads up that キ and モ are upside down. Looking forward to the next video!
ミ might be as well
I've never built a mech keyboard, I don't even own a mech keyboard, but your videos are just so pleasing to and fun to watch
I can't wait to see the finished product of your iris. That underglow looks really good! I didn't know it was gonna look like that.
That black one is perfection for me. Very nice. I don’t want to go through all that work though, lol.
What a detailed video building this keyboard! Looks very beautiful! Good job! 👌😍
Thanks m8

Haha, shows how good I am with the legends :)
I realize it is kinda off topic but do anyone know a good place to watch new movies online?
@Kolton Major Meh lately I have been using Flixportal. Just search on google after it :P -canaan
@Canaan Brixton Thanks, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) I really appreciate it !
@Kolton Major no problem =)
Love those 2049 keycaps. Been running mine since they launched.
the board design is really smart, they can just make one board that can just be flipped for a matching unit. i like it. :3
Crazy! This is piece for piece what I was originally thinking of doing for my Iris build! Typing on it now with 70 g Aliaz Silent Tactiles and SA 1976. Probably watched this video 20 times waiting to get it all in the mail :).
new mic prop, concrete cylinder? looks like a DIYPerks project :D
nice video, this should be the official build guide for the Iris and levinsons.

Same, dude, QMK ruined me.
Whelp now I’m eyeballing this build lol. Debating between this and the YMDK SP64. I wanna get into splits but love hot swap. Ugh tough call haha
Would really like to see a programming and flashing tutorial to go with this!
you can always look into mill- max sockets? you solder them in and then your board is essentially hot swap
Great tutorial. What is height of one of four middle piece?
It's really nice build. Could u make comparison zilents (if possible not only 62g) with aliaz and some popular tactile switches? And it'll be interesting to get ur opinion about Ultimate Hacking Keyboard and compare it vs other ortholinear ergonomic keyboards.

Great video man but can you make Laser_ninja hurry up with the rev 3 kits!
Feel like I been eating forever..😭👴💀
Is there any way I can get updates on the progress rather than just checking the website ever other week?
I really wish I was competent enough to do this because already built ones are expensive af
Lanurus you can do it
i like your vids man. great work keep on..doing..making production closer to humanity..
btw
why dont you make these wireless? with a ton of battery life?
You’re back!!
Thumb keys seem to be in weird locations. Inner one would require you to fold the thumb under your palm, outer ones seem poorly angled, and top one would require a twist of the wrist to reach?

did you ever go through the flashing process?
Nice job! I'm building mine too, but the pro micro has to flipped on the other side of the keyboard right? Doesnt matter if it is the slave or master side?
What are those bolts??? Where can I find them? I am ordering myself an Irisi Keyboard also :D
Where do you get the legs for tenting?

I wish I had enough money to build this. I really like it
Wow awesome, the keyboard I always needed!
.......and the buy is over. FML.
The Iris stock is constantly in and out of stock, but is replenished quite often :)
Thanks for the tip mate, I'll keep a tab open :)
By the way your mate's page was kinda hard to find, maybe worth linking in the description?
Thanks for this video! Both keebs looks really fine. May i know if i could build this without the plate? Meaning the switches just sit on the pcb?
I do not own the iris but yes you can. But, you need to know how to wire the rows and columns together, if you do not know how it could take you a bit of time to find that out.
How hard it's solder the diodes?
Thanks for you content :)
Is switching to an ergo board worth it? I currently main a 40% board, so I have zero issues with layers
Hopefully others can answer, because I didn't give this enough of a try to give advice on that :(
Yes, if you type a lot, like if you were a writer, coder, lawyer, typist etc. It's still very nice to use one even though you don't type that much. Currently, nerve damage from long term carpal tunnel syndrome is irreversible. So I consider this a cheap insurance against it.

@@SaltosAxe i have ergodox ez too... Ortholinear layout is so annoying to get used to because I TouchType.
Anyone wants to buy my ergodox? :D
How much did it cost you in total? I really want to build one with low profile switches, would that be a thing?
Nice video! How much was the overall cost for a single keyboard?
Hmm, without the keycaps, 1 Iris would have been about 70+USD (rough est). The keycaps add a lot to that price, although there are many cheap keycaps out there.
TaeKeyboards Thank you 👌
how stressing is using this keyboard? better or worse than a common keyboard? what about the ideal tilt?
really missing that flashing tutorial, not gonna lie.
I guess this is as good place as any to ask - why does some PCBs (like ths keeb.io ones) require diodes and some (like the katana60 from candykeys) does not?

Would love to know how to get a set of those cuts from laser ninja! How much does he charge?
Those legs do they have a proper name?
Trying to find some online but no idea what to search.
Tenting legs.
How do Zilents feel. I dont want something too heavy but maybe the smoothness will help with this compare to browns
The rev 7 has an option to rent the middle layer what is that and is it customizable like the ergodox ez
Would love to see a video like this for the corne/crkbd/heliodox.
I want to find those feet for my personal case of muy sofle/rev1 keyboard. Do you know where can I buy it?
Where did you get the black threaded pipes that you used to angle the board? They're not available on Keebio.
Awesome Video Thank you!!!!
You did it better than me that's for sure ;) haha 😂
Haha nah mate. There's room for all kinds :)
Where's The flashing QMK tutorial at?
Those cases look very slick. Does Laser_Ninja have a store?
He has a page/store. I am sure Tae will updating the description or something to get in contact with him!

you should try building his new keeb - Quefrency or wait for its 65% version. :)
Desoldering gun not sucking out all the solder
Where do you get the legs?
he made his own keyboard
*he made his own keyboard*
Isn't that normal?
haha its because it seems like he only makes keyboards for other people all the time
Giving it away at Melbourne Meet. gg boys
lmao he still didn't make his own fuckin keyboard
How much for the boards and housing? I couldn’t find it immediately at the link
Is it possible to build this with a usb-c instead of micro?
Iris Keyboard caught my attention. Great video :-) Sub & like.
I’m still waiting for a restock in the white iris pcb
Do you by chance have an Iris keyboard for sale? I'm in Australia. Thanks!
Do you think I could build a similar one an a week?
Don't suppose you know of any full keyboard kits do you? Like a 100% keyboard with numpad?
Unfortunately I do not. They tend to be very expensive anyway. Closest I have the the 96 key layout.
the pro micros aren't included in the iris kit right ?
Is it possible only using left side without attaching the right side?
Yep ;)
@@TaeKeyboards Nice, seems ive found my new Macro/Gamepad =)

Hi! Where you buy the legs?
Do these zilents sound a little bit scratchy or is it my idea?
A tad, but I also had to amplify the sound so that something can be heard.
Is this better than the ErgoDox?
Haven't tried the ErgoDox. And to be fair, I didn't even try to adapt to the Iris anyway :)
man epic build love all AU ppl
