My name is James Aubrey IV and I just recently graduated college from Iowa State University. After college I decided to take a leap of faith. So I moved to San Diego California to pursue my passion for videography/ RUclips. Overall I'm a pretty chill person, outside of RUclips I like to longboard, dance, play video games, lift weights and hangout with my friends. I know that success on RUclips won't happen overnight but I'm willing to stay patient and put in the work to try to prefect my craft daily. What is the Rome Life ? And What does it mean to be apart of it?
Rome Life is something I started during my Sophomore year of high school (one of the worst times in my life) it started off as me documenting my journey to recovery from my shoulder surgery but eventually it turned into a platform that I could use to encourage myself as well as others to chase our dreams.
Rome Life isn't just a saying it's a way of life and for the people who want to be apart of it have to realize that. Rome wasn't built in a day it took a lot of handwork time and most importantly patience. So you can't expect your dreams to be any different

Back “in the day” I listened to this album on cassette and played it on loop. So start at the beginning (this song) play the album all the way through. After Inner City Blues, the strings from What’s Going On start and bleed right back to the first track- it’s awesome.

It's not just that he's smooth, or the music is groovy... It's the content - the message that he delivered so smoothly. So needed back then, and just as relevant and needed today!
This song is on a mixed tape I made yrs ago I entitled "The Struggle." Temps, Ball of Confusion; Isley Bros, Harvest for the World; Gil Scott Heron, Angel Dust; Stevie Wonder, You Haven't Done Nothing. Music that has a societal message.

A lot of songs with "Great Messages" don't always sound good. There's a fine line between poignant and preachy. However, WGO is beautifully sung; written, arranged; produced, thought out, and played (by Marvin; The Great Funk Bros, and Detroit Philharmonic) with a great message to boot.
This song was released in 1971, 49 years ago and it has the exact same meaning now as then. He was singing about police brutality, inequality, social injustice, and protest. Those things are the exact things that are going on in America today. By listening to it you'd never know that he was talking about social issues four decades ago. Marvin was always smooth. In his early years, he sang about love but in his later years, he tried to open everyone's eyes to what was going on in our society.

Back when this song was written and brilliantly performed, those things were real, serious concerns. Those things aren't happening in America today except in the race baiting playbook of Democrat politicians and the "minds" of the ignorant who buy into it.
Civil Rights , police brutality, MLK’s murder and Vietnam- he captures the sadness.

2022 it's STILL the GREATEST ALBUM EVER RECORDED.
On 9/20/20 Rolling Stone Magazine updated their ranking of the 500 Greatest Albums of all time.. Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going on Album landed at #1. It is a concept album. Each song blended into the next. Marvin’s brother was in Vietnam and Marvin had some things he wanted to say about the state of the world and it’s ecology.
Richly deserved. It took them about half a century to work out that the very best efforts of the holy trinity of white 60s rock (the Beatles, Dylan, the Stones) were immediately overshadowed by the 1971 release of Marvin Gaye's generational masterpiece, which distilled the intense hope, disappointment, tragedy, pain and bewilderment of that decade better than any of them had ever managed to do, and which, by tapping into the rich veins of jazz & funk they had mostly eschewed, did it with musical values that far exceeded what even their boldest experiments had been able to bring into popular music. But as they say: better late, than never.
So glad to hear that. This song has been my #1 since it came out, and it always takes me right back to those times, yet still so relevant. The entire album is a masterpiece.

Marvin wrote the whole album, lyrics and instrumentals, and he recorded it over the objections of Motown's owner Barry Gordy. It wound up being one of the most important albums of the decade of any sort. The whole album is extraordinary.
What's Going On is considered one of the greatest albums of all time (Inner City Blues is also on this same album). It covers race, war, poverty, equality, ecology/climate change, social justice, in a brilliant package of great music like this. Marvin was a genius and a legend, and left us way too soon.

Marvin Gaye was amazing across all genres. You may want to check out Otis Redding, "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" Another great performer.

I saw a documentary about him and he would do things like sing laying down or sing to the mic from down a hall way to change the sound, vibe, and the feeling his voice would project a real genius of music

This song and Mercy Mercy are my favorites. still have my original vinyl I play all the time. Dang son I'm a 70 year old white woman and I have all the great black singers music from the 50's, 60's and 70's....you need to delve into the history of great black singers that are unparalleled today.
I completely agree with you. I am wondering why he wasn't brought up with this music. It's timeless and it's part of his heritage. It's such a shame that he's just now hearing all this great music. Hopefully he will pass it along to his children.
@@58fcorley I was raised partly by my white grandmother, but I was still exposed to black culture through my grandfather's side of the family. I'm trying to figure out how he wasn't. I mean, yeah, we all have different experiences, but it's an inside joke in the black community how when you hear Motown playing Saturday morning, you get up and start to clean.

This album was released almost 50 years ago. Has much changed? Marvin was one of he very few Black artists who commented on social injustice.

Marvin Gaye was a musical wizard.........after leaving Motown he was able to show the world just how great his genius was!!!!!!
Before he was a star he actually played drums in the Motown house band (not all the time, but some of the time when the main cats wasn't available).

That film of him at woodstock just shows how much energy he put into his songs. Yes he was drunk and high. At the time he rarely wasnt like alot of musicians at the time. Hence his "dancing". He gave up drugs but kept drinking. Watching him on stage was like heaven itself.

I went on a listening spree when I first heard this album back in April 2019. 4 months straight I’d play this album 1-2 times a day. I’ve never ever been obsessed with an album before or since. It’s my favorite album now. Highly recommended!

@@resin3100my My mom used to be president of a Burton Cummings fan club back in the late 90's to early 2000's. She used to go to multiple shows a year and even dragged me to a few of them. I got to meet Burton when I was 9 years old in 1995. He shook my hand and told me "See you when you're a rock star kid."

There are just some songs that you can remember exactly where you were the first time you heard it. This is one of those songs. I was 13 in 1971 and watching some people playing handball and it came on over the speakers. I love it!
I think it applies for today. Yeah, I am old enough to see him in concert . . . which I did . . . twice. Listen to it all, every cut on the album.

I was born & raised in Detroit, Michigan. When I was 13 years of age, after hearing Marvin Gaye's music I had to meet him! I had every album (LP & single) Marvin Gaye ever made! I did not know what a “Concert” was, and I did not care about "getting in trouble", but I snuck out the house, went to Cobo Hall, and somehow made it to the front row! Marvin HELD MY HAND and sang a part of "Distant Lover" to me. Don't get your hopes up! There will never be another Marvin Gaye! My poor Mother...If I didn't play Distant Lover one million times I've never played it! I am BLESSED to have not only been born during the development of Motown, but in Detroit! Peace

Marvin is one of my favorite Motown singers. I still remember his Motown 25 performance, watching it live and loving it. The released it on dvd and I was so happy. It even has some behind the scene stories and one of them was about Marvin. He died not too long after this. I miss his voice.
