This time in our lives WE ABSOLUTELY NEED THIS MUSIC. We can all come together with music and communicate as a country squash differences, and become a better tolerant loving NATION. We can rise above our political and cultural differences. God Bless This Nation and citizens, WE ALL ARE AMERICAN! 🙏🏼🇺🇲🤟🤗🥰
There's a reason this album is rated by Rolling Stone as #1 all time. I listen to it often. Back in the day this got played ALL THE TIME at our house. So good.
Guys I’m 67. When this LP came out, everyone I knew had it. And we’re all white! ‘What’s going on’ was like a bomb going off. Motown was such a force for bringing this music to the masses it can’t be understated. It’s hard to understand it today all these years later but I lived it. It opened our eyes. ‘Mercy mercy me’ is one of those songs that once he starts singing you get transported to another time.
Hi La and Che... I was a 16 year old Italian kid from Brooklyn when this album was released and I listened to it everyday...still one of my favorites of all time .... I still ask “what’s going on? “
Marvin was special. There are just no two ways about it. He was a beautiful man inward and outward and cared about humanity and the world. He matched his talent with his compassion and that made him a truly relevant artist. It was a sad day when he was taken from us.
Mercy Mercy Me. Such in iconic song. Was released in 1971. Think how much changed or deteriorated in 50 plus years. The Funk Brothers were will versed in jazz being former jazz musicians. What a funky beatJames Jameson and Bob Babbitt on bass Eddie Bongo Brown on the bongos Wild Bill Moore on the sax. Excellent reaction fellas! You are much appreciated 🙏 ❤
Marvin changed me with this album! Going on 13 when the singles got a lot of radio air. Remember listening to the whole album (that’s what we did at that time) and it blew my young teenage mind. I played a lot of basketball so had diverse friends, but Marvin’s humanity and the sweetness and love of his lyrics and music and his heart helped shape a much, more compassionate soul within myself. Marvin was truly amazing on so many levels.
James Jamerson on Bass! JPJ's # 1 influence! The bass line on "Ramble On" is SPOT on Motown! Such a great record, used to always listen to it on cold dark days when I lived in Detroit..
This time I have to agree with some responses here. Socially every white friend I knew loved this album. This was mandatory for any album collection and shattered all ethnic societal walls. Better late than never.............
For me, coming from one who's a fan of soul music, Marvin is what I imagine what God would sound like if he could sing. Listen to the 1982 recording of Marvin walking into a Belgian church in 1982 to sing the Lord's Prayer and you'll be mind blown. There was no one like Marvin, pure and simple.
I grew up in the Detroit suburbs, born in ‘61. These songs were the very beginnings of my music addiction, along with The Beatles, Stones, etc.. Yeah, BerryGordy didnt want to rock the Motown bout by putting out a •protest album”. But Marvin threatened to leave the label of he wasnt granted complete autonomy to make this record.
It's kinda sad that this record will never not be topical and relevant. Many of the problems he's speaking on are worse then they were then. This record is a monument that future generations will always visit.
A beautifully haunting album by Marvin packed with social awareness. It is just as relevant today as it was back then. There is a great live performance of him in a formal suit playing the piano to an audience of students. The songs blend so perfectly together.🎶 One of my favorite albums of all times. Thanks guys for this reaction to this sweet, brilliant artist. RIP Marvin❤
I loved this album when it came out im 67 and still listen to it now more than ever, the message in this album is timeless he saw then what government's ignore and still ignore
Again, just Marvin Gaye... He was just a treasure. When I was developing musically (in my understanding of music as a guitar player and also listening to different genres) in my twenties, the first time I heard this album changed my life. What a beautiful voice not only in a musical sense but in the meaning of what he was saying.
This is scripture with a beat . It’s the Epistle of St. Marvin reaching into our very soul and challenging us to do more than hear but act on what is heard. “ All he asks of us is we give each other love”
Everyone in the world should be required to own this album and listen to it's message. The music in the first part of Save the Children always gave me a Sinatra Vegas lounge music type of vibe. And it transitions perfectly into the God is Love, Mercy Mercy Me songs.
Mercy Mercy Me is one of my favorite songs of all time. Try Nature's Way by Spirit & Look At Mother Nature On The Run by Neil Young were hits at this time. Also, you two will love Mr. Skin by Spirit - not an environmental song, but about their drummer.
I saw Marvin Gaye with the full band sometime in the 1970s at the Circle Star theatre in Redwood City CA, and the music sounded just as good live as on the record.
I grew up listening to Tamla Motown, all those love songs of the sixties, then the Temptations released Ball of Confusion, Edwin Starr with War. The times had changed, Marvin releasing What's Going On was a pure mind bender. Marvin had always been one of my favourite Motown artists but, this album blew my mind. This is still one of my top five albums of all time along with Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd.
I still remember the first time I heard Marvin Gaye on the radio when I was a kid in San Jose, CA. The song was I'll Be Doggone (1965). I fell in love with him then. Such charisma and charm.
I remember when "What's Going On" came on the scene. I always love the songs that hit the radio. Sometime in the 90's I finally got around to purchasing the CD from Columbia House. Now it's a whole new ballgame. I don't know how it's possible for beauty and pain to coexist in the same space, but this compilation proves it's possible. I've come to realize it's a metaphor for life on this side of heaven. I call it the "ouch and amen" factor.
This LP changed my life and awakened me in my mid teens. I played it over and over. Marvin became my spiritual guide in life, he was blessed with talent and wisdom, to tell us all. On a side note, The best Sax I have heard in a song is one the record 'Sparrow' by Marvin Gaye, from the LP 'Here My Dear'. It's a sublime journey. Marvin is The Man!!
I bought this on vinyl when it came out then on cassette then on cd so that I could listen to it everywhere,I’ve still got them all + replacement vinyl 😊
After you finish side 2 can you go back and do the whole album again and again and again? One of the best of all time. Thanks for the great reactions. 😊
So many different levels of genius. People often point to Pink Floyd for their transition heavy concept albums. It should be noted that this album came out two years before "Dark Side of the Moon" which seemed to copy Marvin's style of seamless transitions from one song to the other with this album. So influential, lyrically technically and musically.
This is from a time when musicians learned their craft in other genres and brought their skills to new music. This is not what they listened to when young (it didn't exist), unlike kids today who grew up with pointy guitars and Pro Tools.
Marvin was before his time. Please understand Mr. Gaye was the first to use background tracking. Using his voice on multiple background tracks. Before then, everyone used background singers in the studio, and live performances.🎶🎵🎤
This time in our lives WE ABSOLUTELY NEED THIS MUSIC. We can all come together with music and communicate as a country squash differences, and become a better tolerant loving NATION. Beautiful comment!!

This album is a masterpiece..R.I.P. Marvin Gaye a beautiful human being…
It was so prophetic and fitting for today. He addressed war, police brutality, poverty, religion & faith, and environmental issues.
Once Berry Gordy let Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder write their own song's, look what happened! Timeless music!
Mercy mercy me still gives me goosebumps and I'm 63 now. Marvin Gaye was a national treasure.
This album is spiritual healing.
Thank you for playing God is Love
One of those albums that just bring tears to your eyes.
Marvin was a treasure.
SAVE THE BABIES!

Completely applies today as it did back then. Nothing changes but the technology. Save the children! This album is magical.

My favorite album of all time. Marvin was a genius.
What's Goin' On was HUGE when I was little. It was on everywhere!! I remember it on the radio all the time. It's a classic.
This time I have to agree with some responses here. Socially every white friend I knew loved this album. This was mandatory for any album collection and shattered all ethnic societal walls. Better late than never.............
You've got to see this in the live version with Jamerson right there playing the bass and Marvin singing in a jazzy style.
Brothers, NO ONE had a voice like Marvin Gaye! His songs were a pure joy each and every time you heard it! Loved y'alls reaction once again!
Marvin taking us to church. It's sad that we've gotten away from this message, so prevalent in the 70s.
They'll never be another one like Marvin...ever.
Yes, keep this music alive, teach your children well. One of the best songs ever. Mercy, mercy me. ❤
When he started singing save the babies I got major chills man those notes are from the soul 100% all these songs are magicial and from God, really.
Lord have mercy ❤
That voice and that message.
It's kinda sad that this record will never not be topical and relevant. Many of the problems he's speaking on are worse then they were then. This record is a monument that future generations will always visit.

that would be the save the children documentary where you can see that performance...
Marvin was the OG! No one can touch him!
I loved this album when it came out im 67 and still listen to it now more than ever, the message in this album is timeless he saw then what government's ignore and still ignore
Thanks for sharing this with another generation. Best soul/r&b/gospel/social commentary album of and for all times.
Timeless sung by an icon!

Thank you for playing these. The whole record, as everyone knows, in one single suite/ concept. RIP, Marvin.
This is scripture with a beat . It’s the Epistle of St. Marvin reaching into our very soul and challenging us to do more than hear but act on what is heard. “ All he asks of us is we give each other love”
It's one of my favorite songs! Great pick!
If Marvin can't bring tears to ur eyes u are not Human 😢🙏🤫😊
They don't make em like this anymore...he was a treasure
Marvin 🐐💯✅🐐
Gone too soon, RIP Marvin
Everyone in the world should be required to own this album and listen to it's message.
The music in the first part of Save the Children always gave me a Sinatra Vegas lounge music type of vibe. And it transitions perfectly into the God is Love, Mercy Mercy Me songs.
Marvin was Opening Eyes !!! MOTOWN Forever !!!!!
Brothers, at 5:45???? That little bass run is the reason I’m a pro bassist and guitarist and drummer. So sublime and yet tragically subtle.
Thank you for reviewing these songs on the album. The whole album is great. From top to bottom. From South Africa, peace
Mercy Mercy Me is one of my favorite songs of all time. Try Nature's Way by Spirit & Look At Mother Nature On The Run by Neil Young were hits at this time. Also, you two will love Mr. Skin by Spirit - not an environmental song, but about their drummer.
Absolute masterpiece!!!!!❤️🔥❤️🔥 I wish more of our young people would react to it.
Mercy Mercy Me is awesome ❤. Love Marvin.
23yrs ago mercy mercy me played on repeat for 2wks on the radio here on Maui Hawaii.
Save the Children is such a great and heartfelt song. Love it. All of them are great on that album as well.
I saw Marvin Gaye with the full band sometime in the 1970s at the Circle Star theatre in Redwood City CA, and the music sounded just as good live as on the record.
This has been at the top of my "desert island" list since the first time I heard it 50 years ago.
This is definitely magic, magical music
Marvin is amazing, one of the greatest albums of all time
Love the reaction! Keep up the good work" This album is a masterpiece from my all time favorite artist.
Classic. Maybe his Best.
RIP, brother. And, thanks.

Epic artist! Epic album! Period! Love the man, love the reaction
Great reaction 👏 Love the song ✌️☮️

He’s best album ever
Smooth head shaking groove. ⭐️😁
Crazy story. The sax player didn't know he was recording. Thought he was warming up.
That cut made the track. Amazing.
Genius❤🎼🎶
I bought this on vinyl when it came out then on cassette then on cd so that I could listen to it everywhere,I’ve still got them all + replacement vinyl 😊
Cannot wait until you guys do Inner City Blues!
We wore this album out back in the day. Lol. A true masterpiece.
Marvin what can you say. Just such a smooth sexy voice and man. So good.
One word"GRAND"
Amazing!
In my opinion .. It's the greatest album in history
After you finish side 2 can you go back and do the whole album again and again and again? One of the best of all time. Thanks for the great reactions. 😊
Headed to class when rock n roll station interrupted to tell of Marvin's murder.
Heartbreaking.
You need these three songs in the Detroit Mix version: Heaven...
Save the children is just something special 52 years later. And Motown didn't want to put this album out?! Crazy.
You know, Marvin wanted to be a jazz singer.
Save the babies takes on a whole new meaning 2023 .. M.G. was on .. God is my Friend .. Jesus is my Friend !! He will forgive all our sins!!
when motown ruled...with the wall of sound that phil spector was building in the studio
So many different levels of genius. People often point to Pink Floyd for their transition heavy concept albums. Please title track from " Superfly" best one on that Soundtrack !
We’re going to get it done soon
💯
❤❤❤🎉🎉
Intro:
They call that a scratch in the record.. lol
Take II
Appreciate you leaving that in..
Have a great weekend gents
Was this brother looking into a crystal ball while recording this cut?? #MessageInTheMusic🎤💯💯💯🔥🔥🔥👌
He's just got a couple of his Detroit football player friends helping him out in the background of What's Going On.
This is from a time when musicians learned their craft in other genres and brought their skills to new music. This is not what they listened to when young (it didn't exist), unlike kids today who grew up with pointy guitars and Pro Tools.
Huge 60’s sound
One for the algo 👍
More great music from 1971...
The Phillips CD ad song.
please, please listen to marvin's "piece of clay". the world needs it.
Marvin was before his time. Please understand Mr. Gaye was the first to use background tracking. Using his voice on multiple background tracks. Before then, everyone used background singers in the studio, and live performances.🎶🎵🎤
It's the message.
Nobody's listening now.
Truth to this day.
Jamerson and Babbit were the finest bass players in R&B
