There was a time when converting mini-pickups using flooded lead acid batteries was the most popular way to get an EV. The hot setup was to start with a GM S-10/S-15 as you could store batteries underneath the bed, allowing the truck to swallow up to 24 Trojan 6 V batteries without cutting into bed storage. The motor of choice was a 9 inch DC motor, with a Curtis Controller. These trucks were barely fast enough to make it on the highway, were lucky to get 50 miles of range in urban/suburban driving and were definitely homebuilt. Still they weren't a bad proposition in the days before the Nissan Leaf.
