It seems like there’s nowhere else on earth that your can really move that freely for so long other than on backcountry ice. It looks like the skaters could move on their own two feet forever, or at least until the ice runs out. It seems absolutely magical and free.

In Idaho we usually have 6-8 inches (15.24- 20cm) of snow by now but this year we only got 2-3 (5-7) and it all melted. Even the ski resorts are having to close in Januray because there is not enough snow.

Yeah, I tried this in Ottawa, Canada with my son. It was amazing and such a liberating and magical memory... until the police showed up and threatened to arrest me as apparently it is illegal to skate on the river. We honestly live in such a nanny state I'm surprised they don't force us to wear helmets to walk on the sidewalk.

How huge or small is the risk of falling through the ice into the water? I would love to ice skate, and doing so out in the beauty of nature looks amazing, but I have a deep fear of being trapped under ice, freezing and/or drowning to death.
