This is actually tradition in other countries too! I am from Czech Republic, we celebrate this day too Its one of my favorite days in the year as I get to pay respect to my ancestors :)
We have same tradition in Lithuania. All night of all saints cemetery is brightest place in city and on Christmas eve we leaving food because all who are not with us will back what night and of course they want eat. And as my granmother teached me i always bring some extra candles for these people who dont have relatives and what they graves ar warmed by light of candle and some one still cares
Extrermely good video. Many thanks! Mane people on the West think that our tradition is too old, sad and boring. Maybe this video will show the true face of this day and this tradition.
Yeah, when you compare this with Halloween, the latter starts to look very silly and childish in comparison, doesn't it? That's why it makes me sad, when people in Poland are parroting foreign holidays (mostly from America :q ), despite the fact that they have their own traditions and holidays that are also great and beautiful. Not only All Saints Day, but also a lot more: Christmas traditions, New year's traditions, and also a lot of pre-Christian, Slavic holidays related to agriculture and nature. All that will soon be forgotten and lost forever if we don't stop copying American holidays so eagerly.
Thanks for your video I'm polish living in the UK if I don't have a chance to go back that day I will go as this year to any cemetery and light some candles on any grave most forgotten one...
Was brought to tears this morning when my priest showed us a picture of how Poland celebrates and truly cherishes this tradition of remembering the Holy Souls. Poland, facing the Great Schism in 1054 from the East, the Protestant Revolt in 1517 from the west, and finally Communism the 20thC; through it all, the Polskis have kept the faith to heart, and remember those before them who made the ultimate sacrifices. "It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins." 2 Maccabees 12:46.
Thank you, Patrick, so very much, indeed for it! We love you for this true, authentic interest you always have been showing about Polish most significant traditions! It so important because at every Polish family you have a one or more that one héroe who gave his life for freedom. I still remember when being just a little girl I was told by my Granny to look after an tiny, unknown little kid's grave placed on the side of our Grandpa grave...we liked to go and put flowers and pray for him...
To me the coolest thing about is, you can 1) smell the candles in the air even away from the cemetery 2) the cemetery gets noticeably warmer, even though it's cold in November. I think it nicely represents people coming to warm cold graves with their love for the deceased.
Hey Patrick, good job, thanks. You pointed out really something special about Poland, really the all year around care Poles give to graves of their families, national heroes is a phenomenon,I also now think, this is one of the event that unites Poles and gives them source of identity. All the cemeteries are memorials to our history.
It's actually one of my favorite tradition. The Powązki Military Cemetery looks amazing in the evening on 1st November, plus the smell of the candles is very characteristic.. I visit this Cemetery very often, as i have my great-grandparents and grandparents there, but on the 1st November is completely different mood there. We always visit my grandparent's friends (e.g. Ryszard Kapuscinski) and journalist Waldemar Milewicz, as well as Roslaw Szaybo (famous Polish posters and album covers designer). My great-grandpa (from my dad's side) was murdered in Kuropaty and we always put a candle by the Katyń memorial to commemorate him, as he doesn't have his own grave (was not identified yet.). We visit also my grandma's beloved uncle, who died in Warsaw Uprising in the age of 26.., as well as my great-grandma who first tortured and murdered in Pawiak prison - world famous art-deco designer Julia Keilowa. Thanks for this video, it's good to share this beautiful tradition of ours, of Poland. Cheers.
I live in U.S. and when my mom passed away she did not wanted to be buried home. She wanted to be buried in U.S, so I can teach my kids this wonderful tradition.
I am truly amazed that you totally grasp the importance of our traditions and values passed on to the next generation. That is why we do it. We will create a future for Poland that is brighter than anything people can imagine. Poland is not yet lost...while we still remain. We have work to do and our ancestors are looking upon us. We cannot fail. Poland will be the beacon of hope and a bastion of Western Judeo-Christian civilization.
Pozdrawiam rodaka.
It's special day for us, because we don't want to forget about our history. We want to remember about people who died for freedom, for Poland. Also religion is important for Polish people. We remember about polish saints. We just need to cultivate this very polish tradition. It's our legacy. This isn't a sad day for us. This is a very moving day.
Also when we cant visit grave for some reason we go to any close by cementary and light candle there still thinking about family members and friends we want to remember about that day. I live in ireland so i cant fly to Poland every year.
Calm down. EU helps us. Tyranny is literally when someone is holding you by force. We are free to leave, but we would lose benefits; not to mention, get stuck in the unproductive past - which we should honor, sure - but the world is progressing, and that's natural; it's good for Poland to be a part of that, and develop.
Thank you for the video. But, you missed one very important thing about All Saints Day. We don't just remember the departed, we also say a pray at each grave and it is the beginning of the month of pray for the souls through daily Gregorian Masses and this is one of the holy days were by confession, holy mass and Eucharist the sins of a prugatory soul can be completely absolved. That is the point of this day. To bring all purgatory souls to heaven through our prayers.
