    Oh yes.. There is cold ice, and warm Ice. That's why the ice you buy in those outdoor ice boxes does not last. If you find a store with the ice in the Frozen food case running at -5 to 0 degrees, or even better, the ice cream case operating at -10 to -12 degrees. A lot of C-stores and some newer gas stores keep their ice in these cases. This is the best ice! This guy has a great idea!

      You 'should' pre-cool your coolers before a trip I have heard.
      Load it up a day before - drain/re-ice before departure.
      I've done this with cheap coolers - didn't really see any effect.
      But if you a yeti or other high brand it supposedly works.

    The fact the ice doesn't freeze or stick makes me think I need to do this. I don't need as much ice as you do but the home icemakers break within a year and waste A LOT OF WATER with the constant melting. This is nice.

    Commercial ice machines have an insulated bin only, and not a freezer bin so the ice does melt and it goes down a drain. Therefore it does stick together at the bottom. But this is ingenious and I may do this myself in my garage. I am a commercial refrigeration tech. Great job!

    Two Tips if ya haven't seen them.
    1) Glad to see the standard catch bin.
    Catch 'fresh potable ice' a day or two before trip.
    2) Amazon sells drawstring ice bags for home use in large lots.

    Great work around! The "standard kitchen refrigerator/freezer ice makers" will make about 10 lbs a day, each. Once the box is cold enough to freeze the water, they run mostly on timed events. You may not gain much with the interior fans, and remember the fan motors heat will have the other effect; heat. Your lash up for the IM kit valves and the freezer is laudable but all that was needed was a plug/cord for the freezer that is rated for 15 amps or more at 110 volts, and it will carry all the loads- IM kits, valves, freezer to the 20 amp circuit you plugged into. I'd also figure our which walls of the freezer have chilling coils in them, some have only one wall cooling, some two almost none three or four, and elevate the box, make hole in the free side with an insulated door where I could swing it aside to scoop out the ice and it could quickly and automatically close. And if more ice is the ticket, install one or two more IM kits. Awesome! I worked on this stuff for a career and it never dawned on me! Awesome! PS; ice sticking together usually means the door gasket has a leak or is being left open too much and air borne moisture is condensing on the ice, which causes the sticking. Seal up your cord passages through the gasket- if you do a rework, run your cords through the "hot wall" and seal them up. Damn, why didn't I think of that- I have wanted something like it at camp for years! And I have the junk to make it from! FR Final PS; You don't need a "pro look", you need "personal snazz"- paint or wrap some "flames of ice" or something you like on it! FR!

    With freezer running, lid open, no frost on inside surface use a hand held temperature gun scanning sided or side or up and down you should be able to locate and identify placement of refrigerant cooling lines making it safe to puncture case for electrical and water lines. these perforations can be resealed with silicon cocking.

  • @robsycko
    @robsycko 3 года назад +2

    There is an adjustment for time in the front cover of the ice makers. You can speed up the prosses if the ice forms well before the dump time. It is a flathead screw under the cover and on some models it has a + and - symbol so you know witch way to turn. Make adjustments half turn at a time or less.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 года назад +1

      Correct, I looked into that

    • @MrNiceCobra
      @MrNiceCobra 3 года назад

      robsycko, that screw is regulating amount of water entering icemaker by changing water valve opening time..... There is a sensor molded in the wire and touching the bottom of metal ice form, that will close electric circuit ,when metal ice form temperature will get below 32F(meaning water is frozen in the form and it is time to rotate icemaker motor and dump out ice cubes. So the only way to speed up ice production is to lower freezer temperature.

    LOVE This!!! Very cool. Working in restaurants for many years I have dealt with my share of commercial ice machines and which perform well and the ones that just plain suck...
    One tid bit I learned a while back was that Ice Machines LOVE ice... meaning the fuller the machine is the faster the cycles can run on the machine. So, I propose a test.
    Measure 24 hours of production with very little or no ice.
    Then purchase some bags of ice... (Yes small investment). and make it at least half full. then test 24 hours.... Perhaps having it full with ice will help maintain a full machine stay fuller ...
    Thanks again... very cool.

    Ice (and anything) can be cooled to absolute zero. Ice can't get WARMER than 32-34 f because it melts. The freezer is doing some unecessary cooling because storing the ice doesn't require 0 f. You could probably save some electricity by running the freezer a little warmer.

    • @andrewk8636
      @andrewk8636 3 года назад

      Then the ice is warmer and melts faster. The freezer isn't working much because the ice is keeping a very low temperature already. The freezer only needs to maintain the temperature. The only part it needs to freeze is the water coming in for new cubes. Colder ice cubes last longer in a cooler though the difference isn't as big as people might think.

    i love this. i have a countertop ice maker because i can't drink without a full cup of ice etc. but i feel like my little ice machine makes like 4x as much as one of yours. however it cannot hold that much and so i constantly have to use it or move it to my freezer. i wonder if you could take the components of a higher powered one like mine and put it in a big freezer like yours... another thing i like about yours is that you can also use it for food. if i did it would i would maybe put the ice makers over the other side and get one of the baskets that fit over the hump on that side and use the basket for food and the deeper big part for ice (and maybe put some gallon jugs of water at the bottom too), but yeah very useful and i love that it doesn't stop your freezer from being a freezer or your ice makers from being ice makers and is easy to undo. thanks for sharing!

    It looks like you removed the metal bar from the makers...that bar acts as a off switch for when the ice builds up .. You could mount the fans in a channel with air holes drilled in it, so the ice level wouldn't affect it. You could make the channel out of two pieces of aluminum attached in a 90 degree angle and place it in one of the corners of the freezer. Mount the fan about 6" from the bottom of the channel and drill air holes in the bottom of the channel that ice couldn't get in to.

    I've replaced probably 6 ice makers in my refrigerators over 20 years now and love your use of them in the freezer. With that duplex design if one goes out you still have a working one going. I'd like to reclaim the space in my freezer taken up by the silly icemakers that break and just make a huge dump bin to keep plenty of ice on hand. Now to surf the internet and see if I can find an ice maker that puts out those saucer shaped ice cubes instead of the kind you and I have now.

    I recently came across your video and decided to give it a try also, because we use a lot of ice also, but I was messing around with the FLIR I have and noticed a good amount of the cooling was leaking out of the seal of the freezer top and when I put a sensor from my meter inside at the ice level vs the ice maker mechanism, I found there was a wide gap in the temperate. So i modified my mounting setup and dropped it down less than an inch inside the chest and built an extra layer of insulation across the top by using the 1inch pink insulation board, but i separated the ice storage area from the ice makers, so the ice makers are fully sealed in by insulation from the top view, then there is a foam divider separating the 2 sections, which has a separate insulated removable lid over the ice area, so the entire inside of the chest freezer has a 2nd layer of insulation across the top, then the top can close over it all as normal. The way i supported the insulated cover in the freezer was by gluing 1x1 inch cuts of the insulation board to the insides of the chest freezer to acts as a lip for the insulating lid to sit ontop of. Based on this mod alone, the amount of power consumed by the freezer over a 24hr period in the garage reduced by 31%, bringing down my electric cost to run the DIY ice maker setup to around $0.29/day in electricity down from $0.38/day and the ice makers outputs is about 8% more ice based on my bin test vs prior to the mod. I was planning to integrate a fan/blower into the mod also, but the gap at the ice maker level vs ice level has drastically reduced by purely increasing the insulation across the top.

      @@TKCL if you would, make a post or video on longevity of the ice makers. I had one in a new refrigerator that was replaced 3 times before the warranty went out. I asked the repair man what was causing them to fail so fast. He said it’s mostly due to cheap plastics working in a cold environment. He also said turning down the ice cube size adjustment would probably help out a lot. He ended up being right because the last ice maker went almost 3 years before it died. I’m just curious if the colder temperatures in the deep freezer will have any effect on the lifespan of the ice makers.

    Just one of those fans will probably do the job, to more evenly distribute the temperature inside the freezer space. Freezers rely on convection anyway, but I get that what you're trying to do is to speed up ice production. Very good idea, I'm really surprised a manufacturer hasn't come up with the same idea, there must be a market for it.

    A lot of what causes ice to stick together in your average home freezer (which is what I think folks might be talking about) is because most home refrigerator / freezer combos have an automatic defrosting cycle that runs in the freezer periodically to prevent ice build-up on the freezer walls. When this happens, the ice melts just a bit and then refreezes, thereby making the ice stick together. It's not so much about keeping the ice at zero degrees (or even 10, 20 or 30) ... it's about having a cheaper freezer that doesn't have an automatic defrost. The pros are that ice won't stick together, but the obvious con (as can be seen in the video) is ice buildup on the freezer walls, which will eventually require you to manually defrost it.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 года назад +1

      Exactly right! Defrosting once a year is no big deal, especially since my ice makers are removable and the freezer has a drain. Ice makers need to be cleaned occasionally due to bacteria concerns.

    • @nopenottalib4366
      @nopenottalib4366 3 года назад

      @@TKCL Absolutely. Plus, it's all about your intended use. In your case, since you're using this freezer specifically as an ice producing unit, having an auto defrost would be undesirable. As an IT technician, people always ask me, "What technology solution is the best?" The correct answer is, "What are you actually needing to do?"

  • @georgedavies4192

    Save yourself time and money. Get the chest freezer and as many ice trays that will fit. Load them into the freezer. You make so much more ice faster and with less headache.
    The smallest commercial icemakes are around 40-80 lbs but that's based on storage. They can produce usuay 150lb per 24 hours if the storage section was larger

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 года назад
