True. If you’re that one golfer who knows he is doing exactly what has been taught, instead of like most of us who merely think we know we’re doing what was taught.
Mr. Johnston is a pro's pro. I've been enjoying golf for 40 years, and this is the definetly the finest lesson I've ever seen. This will help so many players so much.
I must say Steve --- your channel has some of the best video instruction out there. The feeling the viewer has is that you are focused on helping us rather than showing off your skill as so many others do!! Thank you so much from across the pond!
@Cad Pro OH MY.... you just made me blush! That's one of the nicest things anyone's said to me.... look what you've done now I'll have to touch up my mascara!
This finally lit the lightbulb! I hopped up and grabbed my 8 iron. After many attempts (I had to change my grip and stance to get this right) I got the hang of it. It's NOT a handsy move - you have to get your whole body to move in sync - with the intention of elbow first - drag the mop - loose wrists - wait for it - then POP! The whip of the club shoots the ball like a cannon - without swinging hard. There's that lag! There's that shaft lean. Very smooth low energy swing and snaps through the ball. Easier to control the direction when your body is swinging smoothly instead of muscling through. Nobody ever showed me this in such detail. Thanks so much! This HAS to be a very accurate way to strike the ball - under control but excellent distance. Can't wait to use it on the course.
Yet pros use this blue gadget between their arms as they swing during practice to ensure their elbows remain the same distance apart to avoid this exact thing. Isn’t it weird how golf just works for some and doesn’t for others? If it works do it, who cares if pros say it’s wrong .
Truly the best golf instruction I ever received ! This instructor is the one that, finally, instructs...as if all the others I have met were hiding the true "secret" of golf. And the beautiful Scottish accent comes as a bonus, straight from the land where golf was invented ! Thank you Steve.
Steve, amazing, you are the only instructor who has pointed out the heart of a good swing. All good things follow from this. Thanks for making good golf easy.
Finally, how should the hands should be. I think I had my first, second & third solid ball strike. I don't care where they went, the solid feel was fantastic. Thank you Steve!
Hands down, the best explanation. I got frustrated with dozens of videos ramble about supination and ulnar deviation, and you simplified the mystery in 12 minutes. Thank you!
A very simple explanation of movements required to shallow the club. The emphasis is not directly on shallowlng, but the few movements Steve suggests automatically allow it to happen. Excellent!
Steve,, what GREAT instruction this is!! I loved how you showed (in great detail ) the hand movement position thru impact, those upclose camera shots of the hands are what's missing when other guys out there give instruction, I was able to see and understand exactly what you were talking ebout, thanks so much! I'm going outside now to try this excellent instruction and I'll let you know my results!
Steve, another one of your great videos! Great explanation of the hands and right elbow action during the shot. Thanks again. I always watch your videos. Although I am an American, I have Scottish roots and love the views of the country side around you. Keep it up!
This stuff works! I really like the way you reinforce the key points, I take my Steve lessons to the range and my club pro asks me where I learned that little gem!! Love it and thanks
massive thanks Steve, impact massively improved with this simple adjustment...! I've been trying this with all my shots, from chipping to driver. You did it again. Thank you from Vancouver.
Steve. I have shanked off and on my whole life and this tip seems to have solved it. I can feel the club move closer to me at impact and I am actually taking divots now. Much better. Love your videos. Thanks. Ralph G.
When I first started taking lessons in 1985, My instructor had me do a swirling figure 8 motion just like your demonstration. Now I know why he was trying to teach me that motion...just a few years later! Thanks for this 1 Steve!
Excellent. I believe this will prevent the really high shots I am hitting, coupled with its resultant lack of distance. This tucking the right elbow in with the fluid swing will prevent the cursed over the top action. Thank you for again excellent tuition.
I’m glad for 2 things: 1. Excellent drill! Could barely hit my 60 degree 60 yards. After doing the drills, effortlessly popped them 90 yards! Gotta get used to the low ball flight though. 2. I can actually post a comment on Steve’s videos!
Wife thought you demonstrated this in a very sensuous way. Me, well no comment but I did think this was a very interesting drill to help me loosen up my swing. Thanks Steve.
Good video as always. I'd like to get your perspective on the application of the wrist conditions you are describing. I have golfed for 40 years with varying success. I have concluded (rightly or wrongly) that some people are "Hands" players and some people are "Body" players. If I try to swing with a "Hands" focus, I have very little power, my sequence is poor, and my strike is very inconsistent. However, if I focus on my "Body" rotation first, my sequence is better, I have more distance, my balance is better and i compress the ball better. When I say "Body", I do not mean swaying, spinning, or early extension. For me, the specific movement that works is to initiate the downswing by tilting my right knee (I am a right handed player) down towards my left ankle (without losing my spine angle). Or at least that's what I feel. Because I do that first, everything else follows. The hips follow the knees, the shoulders follow the hips, the hands follow the shoulders and the club follows the hands. After a lot of frustration and trial and error, that is the only way I can achieve the wrist conditions you are describing. In your teaching experience have you found this dichotomy? Hands vs Body.
I'd just watched a video from another unnamed instructor who used alignment sticks under his arm to demonstrate the same thing, and it was as confusing as heck compared to your fluid simpler to understand method!! It seems to me when people make videos on the golf swing they first show how NOT to do it with drawn out explanations of what will go wrong, so that ends up as your first swing thought, I like your way of just getting to the correct method, And guess what? That's my first swing thought!! Thanks Steve!!
Hi Steve, this just works , I've never hit a ball with such good contact and I've added 25 yards to every iron, I feel the wrist bend in the swing , I say to myself ( wishy washy ) Ha, works for me , and it just happens , I just have to get used to the longer distances, cheers
Perfect title! This is definitely the best golf instructtion EVER! It fixed my worst fault and elimiated so many swing thoughts.
Once again you did it Steve ! 12 minutes of pure genius. Much admiration from Canada 🇨🇦.
Steve. You are starting to become a go to source of info. This was one of THE best explanations about the hands in the golf swing. Truly excellent.
Hi Chip, thanks for your comments. Spread the word 😉
No need to spend money, when one can tune in to this man. Excellent instructional information!

Cheers Layne👍👍🤷♂️
I must say Steve --- your channel has some of the best video instruction out there. The feeling the viewer has is that you are focused on helping us rather than showing off your skill as so many others do!! Thank you so much from across the pond!
Soooo true
Best explanation of hands and trail elbow ever. Totally takes the mystery out of shallowing the swing and creating lag. Thank you, Steve!
I've watched a LOT of golf videos and find Mr. Johnston's approach and instruction to be at the very top! So glad I discovered this genius!
Steve you rock. Logic in the simple format that makes us hackers see.
Thanks Timothy👍
Holy crap this is good never seen anyone explain it so simply.... So far Best Video of 2021! Thank You Scotland 🏴
@Cad Pro Yeah but this is the best of 1000s.... don't be hatin!
@Cad Pro OH MY.... you just made me blush! That's one of the nicest things anyone's said to me.... look what you've done now I'll have to touch up my mascara!

Great instruction and explanation of what the wrists should be doing. Can’t wait to try it tomorrow.

I absolutely love this video...it reaffirms everything I’m learning/discovering at the moment 👍🏼
Steve, i have been so struggling with my golf game. Thank you Sir, for your insight!
What a lesson - pure gold
Great explanation of right elbow leading and pause to create lag. Steve's hands/arms very loose and flowing; really good visuals.
Excellent! U are an amazing teacher:-)
Thanks Steve. Very clear instructions. Now for me to get consistent. I am comfortable with your instructions.
Genius at explaining so I understand, thank you sir.

Steve, another one of your great videos! Great explanation of the hands and right elbow action during the shot. Thanks again. I always watch your videos. Although I am an American, I have Scottish roots and love the views of the country side around you. Keep it up!
Incredibly helpful. Thanks. I find that a little bit of Scottish lag in the backswing encourages the proper sequence on the downswing.
This stuff works! I really like the way you reinforce the key points, I take my Steve lessons to the range and my club pro asks me where I learned that little gem!! Love it and thanks
Excellent Mike 👍👍
