The Brandon Ingram Problem

  • Rumors of a Brandon Ingram trade have been circulating throughout the offseason, with the New Orleans Pelicans reluctant to offer him the maximum 4-year/$208 million contract that he's eligible for.
The New Orleans Pelicans likely want to keep Ingram around to try and build around him and Zion Williamson, but that's made infinitely more difficult if Brandon Ingram is on a contract of that magnitude.
With the NBA's new CBA, the Pelicans need to be careful about becoming a luxury tax team, and offering Brandon Ingram a contract that big could jeopardize any chance they have of being competitive going forward. With Dejounte Murray coming into the picture, the future looks complicated for Brandon Ingram and the Pelicans.

But at the same time damaged confidence, added weights, and lack of players setting him up are also big reasons to take in. It’s definitely possible that with a full off-season to restore his confidence, regain his fitness, and expand his outside scoring skills, and just knowing what’s at stake he will be better.

I think the pels problem is 3 fold. Zion is so great the offense needs to be catered around him but he's never healthy which is why having BI who is a great scorer is great. 2nd, is BI and zion are similar on offense. Both like to play with the ball, walk it down, and score. 3rd there will be too many chefs in the kitchen with dejounte, cj, bi, and zion and only 1 of them is great defensively. The pels would be better off starting herb and trey murphy next to zion and dejounte and cj because they defend, space the floor, and don't need the ball. I'm not mentioning the center spot because that's obvious. If I'm Nola moving bi is the best move because cj can at least shoot well and be an off the ball scorer. BI isn't built that way and neither is zion.

3:12 This appears to be a coaching/spacing issue. Just don’t have these two players beside one another. If the guy between them is a good outside shooter then the defense either leaves him open, doesn’t double Zion, or doubles Zion and helps off of Ingram to hedge on the outside shooter in between them. That leaves Ingram the ability to flash to the basket to either receive a good pass or a put back as Zion has excellent court vision.

I think having at least 1 more 3pt heavy guy could alleviate even more pressure from ingram
I think it just ingram choses contested 2 rather than somewhat contested 3, having another 3pt threat might probably encourage him to take more 3 because of spacing

@Jj-ry9yw I don't think he's worth the cap space he takes up. Plus we need someone who's a great teammate, not someone who is famous for never passing the ball. We need players that can shoot but also pass to get the bigs going and maximise Ant. Mpj is a bad pick for us

Ingram's problem : playing with Zion aka another "big prospect with injury and temper issues" which mimic recent Embid => will always create problems, with little to no possibility to win a championship but often have remarkable result when healthy (that's less than half the year). Guys like this are never worth a max contract, but if you don't give it to them they leave and as GM you are fired. Damned if you sign them, damn if you don't.

Brandon Ingram - 4 years/$150M.. 4th year team option. $10M bonus each-time he gets an All-NBA honors (excluding All-Star votes by fans) or if Pelicans makes it to the Finals.

In todays game his skillset doesnt fit to be the 1st option. He should be a good 2nd option, but needs to take more 3's. Now with Murray, its even possible that he has to take even more off ball shots. So in todays NBA Ingram is worth something around 30 Mio per year, maybe 35 in my opinion... but not the Max. If he really wants to play in New Orleans, he should take a 100/3 extension. Just not sure he is willing to take that paycut.

Why not make ingram as a point guard since he needs the ball on his hands.. and he is a good facilitator and a passer... And surround BI and Z three point shooter as first 5... Bench Murray so that they will have a solid team2... Along side with Herb .. and Alvarado... Got to get a C that can shoot 3s.. Z and BI are ball Dominant players but not ball huggers.. so if they get doubled... Available spot up shooters are on standby... Just my opinion though😊😊..
