I think I saw the IDW story was that the Senator (turned into a mindless ratbat) and Shockwave lost an eye and missing a hand) look the way they do because they were punished for not siding with Megatron right away. If I just made it up or not, I like it!
There's gotta be Rumble/Frenzy repaints with these weapons. It almost looks like they can tilt forward like Prowl or Bluestreaks when they are on his back. When I saw the guns first I thought they were warped or broken until I noticed the hinges lol. Cool design.
This is really neat, and I am also old enough to have had cassette tapes so appreciate the retro aesthetic.

There are Rumble and Frenzy versions. TFSource has them, I think.
