    Retrotink 5x and 4k does a good job handling with the PS2 via component cable or RGB scart with motion adaptive deinterlacer, you get a nice stable output no jittering based on my experience, i own OSSC and retrotink 5x

      I own a Retrotink 4K and while it’s pricey, it doesn’t require me to own additional hardware to connect my existing collection of consoles. Dial it in and you can replicate (or exceed) CRT looks and maintain the intended look of a game. You also have a lot of deinterlacing options which are pretty good including a CRT simulation mode that’s pretty convincing.

      Personally I hated the retrotinks ps2 output and went back to my GBSC the deinterlacer has less artefacts and combing in my opinion. Plus with the decomb filter I think it looks amazing. I think the same for GameCube as a UK user with no 480p smash bros.

    The firmware in the video is very old. Yes it is the stable firmware but they are well past that firmware at this point. Tons of features have been implemented and MADI was improved a lot since 3.7.2 firmware

    How does it handle switching from game play to the menu in games like resident evil PS1, silent hill, Dino crisis? How does Haunting Ground PS2 look? What about PS2 Eco and Shadow of the Colossus?

    Looks good as far as I can tell.
    But let’s be honest, nothing beats a CRT especially when it comes to the PlayStation 2 🙂
    There’s something about the glow and the depth coming from a CRT that simply can’t be replicated on modern screens.
    How does this device handle games which switch resolutions in-game, for example when going in and out of menus?

    • @RetroBreak
      @RetroBreak  Месяц назад +2

      The device handles the resolution changing no problem, but the problem is there's no way to directly accept the analogue signals into it, that's why I still have to use the OSSC, which does have issues with the res changes, so at the moment it hasn't helped, but in the future when they release the analogue adaptor then it should do.

    Personally I don't really bother with scalers.
    My personal preferred method is a little simpler but does require a PC (it's how I stream/record retro)
    I hook up my retro system of choice (not the dreamcast, I have another method for that) to a composite to hdmi box
    I then connect that box to my EVGA XR1 lite capture card
    On my PC I use a piece of software called AMARECTV which does the "correct" deinterlacing automatically (you can change this), you can set custom aspect ratios, fiddle with sound output quality and resolution.
    it's by no means a scaler but it's what I use and it all seems fine, it even let's me fix the stretched 16:9 output that the composite to hdmi box uses
    it does require you to use your PC as your monitor unfortunately.
    I mentioned dreamcast, it's the same as before but I use VGA to hdmi instead of composite to hdmi but I still run it through amarectv

    On F-Zero GX you adjust the Horizontal Prescale but not the vertical so it remains at x240, surely you have to set both correctly??

    The OSSC Pro is available for pre-order right now! (23 aug 24). The batches will arrive in a week or so at videogameperfection, So there’s no waiting time, actually a straight up order. This is 3rd batch, black casing.

    I’m just a little confused why you would use a morph 4K on a monitor that doesn’t support 4k

    • @RetroBreak
      @RetroBreak  Месяц назад +1

      I was hoping to use the 4K output with my capture card, but somewhere along the chain the 4K signal breaks down, so I think I need higher quality splitters.. Also will be upgrading that screen to 4k someday. but the 1440p looks great at the moment.

      @@RetroBreak Gotcha. Just make sure every single thing supports 4K. That includes the proper hdmi cables, tv or monitor output, splitter pass through.

    Your video looks decent, but I don't get why you insists on playing inferior PAL (50hz only or without progressive scan options) of games. Also if you were using your Dreamcast through VGA (or using dcdigital) he wouldn't need to go through deinterlace on that console, likewise if you were playing using progressive scan on GameCube (using NTSC variants of the games)
    About the other DOA2 comparisons they look so worse because they are using the ps2 version, which like in Ridge Racer V, is using a bugged field rendering library (which is why it looks so awful even on a CRT). You can actually compare the Japanese and USA versions of Tekken Tag Tournament which use a bugged and fixed version of the field rendering library respectively to see how they both compare. Unfortunately many early ps2 titles use the bugged library and many titles use field rendering overall because Sony engineers in their infinite wisdom chose to only use 4MB of VRAM in the ps2 (half of that of the Dreamcast) which means many games just didn't have enough memory to render at a full 480i, let alone 480p.

      Because he's in the UK. His consoles are PAL. His games are PAL. Importing US consoles was a thing back in the day but it was expensive. Maybe he has a few modded consoles or import consoles, I don't know. As a UK retro gamer I can tell you 99% of my collection is PAL, I bet he's the same. You play the games you have with the hardware you have, and you're constrained by practical things like budget and space.
      Also, I wouldn't necessarily say PAL is always inferior. Yes, some PAL conversions are bad. Many aren't. Colour is better in PAL, and it's a higher resolution. Sure, it's 50Hz and not 60Hz, but I guarantee you that on a CRT you aren't actually seeing much difference (also, by the PS2 era PAL-60 was a thing).

    • @TheLeadG
      @TheLeadG Месяц назад

      @@marmadukesandwichPal versions of gamecube games are all worse. 480p isn’t supported at all. 480i is objectively an inferior resolution and looks nowhere as good.

    • @marmadukesandwich
      @marmadukesandwich Месяц назад

      @@TheLeadG OK. That has less to do with PAL as a video standard and more to do with design decisions on the Gamecube, but yes, progressive scan does look better than interlaced. If you buy a bit of kit for de-interlacing, you're going to show it off by testing games with interlaced graphics. Also, he's in the UK, he's going to have PAL consoles.

    • @RetroBreak
      @RetroBreak  Месяц назад +3

      Obviously if it was a viable option I'd much rather have the NTSC versions but that would involve replacing my entire collection, getting American duplicates of every system, paying import fees, and not being able to buy any games from conventions here... not worth the hassle.

    You know what has solved all my retro problems? Emulation.
    I have a bunch of fat PS2s, with OPL, a retrotink 2x, a marseille mclassic upscaler, etc.
    At the end of the day, it's still very far from the CRT experience, it looks mushy regardless on a monitor.
    With emulation, I've organized beautiful libraries of every single game for the vast majority of consoles using Big Box/Launchbox, which I play in 4k or more. Sure, a tiny minority of games have issues (depending on the console), but running Crash Team Racing in ultrawide is something.
    It can be argued that it's not the same "feel" as the original hardware, but the immense convenience it brings with the upgrades, quick game switches, wireless earbuds for sound, save states, etc. makes it more than worthwhile. At the same time, I can just display my classic consoles instead of using their aging hardware. I don't fall for the "OG hardware" argument anymore.
    Regardless, thank you for this informative video, you're very likeable.

    • @TheLeadG
      @TheLeadG Месяц назад +3

      Emulation has its place but a lot of times it inserts lag. And no matter how you set it up it will always have more lag than native hardware (of coarse with a proper tv with low latency mode) and a proper scaler

    • @RetroBreak
      @RetroBreak  Месяц назад +3

      Thanks, I agree emulation can be good and is a lot less effort. but some of the games I showed here don't work properly at all with emulation yet. Ridge Racer V doesn't render the car properly, and SSX has tracking issues causing the camera to loose track of the player at times.. will be fixed eventually but with real hardware you have no issues like that

    i'm an emulation guy, i think original ps2 games should be played on a crt tho, having little artifacts isnt that big a problem since its just for game capture.
    why play through the games fully on a flat screen when you only need this device for screen capture.
