Paint Badly to Paint Greatly? That Doesn't Make Any Sense!

Artist Brian Sutton walks you through his 10 minute challenge to inspire you to paint badly! That's right, this little 10 minute fun painting exercise is designed to help you build your painting skills by forcing you to focus only on the most important information in your paintings. The result will be (with time and repetition) greater speed, better decisions, better color mixing and better execution of your paintings. You'll see improvements immediately if you do your 10-minute challenges regularly!
Here were Brian's rules for the challenge on this day. He was allowed to put out the paints he thought would generally work for the subject matter. Using a small canvas board (8 x 10 in this case) and the largest brushes he had in his plein air kit, his goal was to produce a super-impressionistic piece with no overlapping brush strokes and only a single layer of paint.
You can make your own rules for your challenges based on your own strengths and weaknesses! This is an individual goal-based challenge, so keep yourself honest. NO CHEATING on whatever rules you set for yourself. Absolutely no working on the painting (ever) after that beeper goes off. The point is the painting is done at that moment. Next time paint faster and better. It will happen.
This challenge comes to us from one of our favorite artists, Haidee-Jo Summers, out of her book "Vibrant Oils." Thanks for the video, it helps me to get started painting again. In my mind it seems like this huge project that needs lots of time, space, and money to get started, but that is not true. I have everything I need and 10 minutes is no problem. I am going to try this with watercolors.
