- I'm excited to show you this video! It's one I made with a professional film company (link below). Let me know what you think! A plein air painting demonstration from start to finish explaining about colour mixing, tonal values, and composition.
Please note: We started filming in the dark to capture the sunrise, so please excuse the dark painting as I begin!
I hope you enjoy this video - please like it if you do & also Subscribe to my Channel, thank you :-)
The location is Bosham, West Sussex, UK.
10x24" oil on board
Made with the lovely people at: www.fromthehipvideo.co.uk/
A lot of painters would get lost with the range of colours you have on your pallet but you manage to still create the subtle subject in front of you. I imagine you expected the sunrise to be more colourful when you laid them out but it shows you are true to what is front and can mix colours superbly.
You are quite correct, I had hoped for some more colour! Thank you for your kind comment!👩🏻🎨🎨
.It is currently 3:35 am and I'm in my studio watching an art video. I received two different busters shots on Wednesday and for the past two days, all I've wanted to do was sleep. So now that I am awake, I thought it would be a good time to watch this video. There is never a wrong time to learn something new, whether it's in life or painting. I would like to express my gratitude to Clare for making all these videos available. I have been watching her videos for a few years now and they have been very helpful in my artistic journey.

Hello Clare, I just came across this video of Bosham, West Sussex, UK.
And wondered if this is Bosham Hoe?
I have also painted a landscape view of Bosham village from across the estuary. But much closer to the village scene and the church on the opposite side of Creek.
This is a beautiful area for artists.
I love how you have chosen this scene, and the colours you have selected to great effect.
I love scenes like this that are subtle, but full of that tranquil nature too.
I noticed as you were painting, how the change in light brought out the seagulls, which were circling around in the lefthand forground.
All in all a very lovely painting. Thank you for making this video. I am inspired to visit this scene again. 🖌️🌞😀👍💯
Dear Paul, many thanks for your observations and comments! It will always be one of my favourite painting subjects! 📽🙏👩🏻🎨❤️

Very nice Clare, very reminiscent of an Isaac Levitan. I know you know that is a high compliment indeed!! Cheers! : )
Hi Ron, wow that is a compliment thank you. I do know of Levitan's work, it's very beautiful :-)
Nice job, Clare!
Thank you Bobby!
Beautiful as usual! But, its not the same without Mr "B"! haha🤗
Those were early days! 🙏😍
wonderful..
Thank you John 😊
Clare thank you for the wonderful videos. Tell me how your palette works? Thank you again for being there)
Thank you 😊 it’s called a Palette Garage from the USA. Mine is an 14” you can order them from Great Art Tools. Best Clare
Thank you so much , best wishes and happy painting
The sound went in and out a bit - perhaps that's my internet connection rather than your recording - but a very enjoyable video to watch, and a lovely, restrained, quiet painting.
Thank you Robert! I believe our sound quality is ok…….. Please you enjoyed the video! 📽❤️
Clare, u r the best on RUclips! Is ur art for sale? Especially this one date June 5, 2022, a sunrise in a cold day! Love, love your work!
Stiner
Thank you Stiner. For available works please visit my website, clarebowen.co.uk The painting you mention is sold.
@@ClareBowenArtist Nice! Congrats!! : )
Such a useful video. It really helps having a clear commentary about the process of applying the paint and the decisions that are taken. Thank you! Could you say what make of oil paint you are using and do you thin it at all with turps or oil to make it flow more easily off the brush?
Thank you Pamela I’m really pleased the commentary is helpful. I use just turps to thin the paint. And the makes of my paints are winsor & newton, Michael Harding, jackson’s Art. I could do a video at some point explaining about my colours?
@@ClareBowenArtist I especially liked the color missing commentary! And I’d love a video focused on your palette. Is this your typical palette? From watching your other videos it seems to be. I’m curious about the permanent rose- is that in place of alizarin crimson? I have a Naples yellow that I’ve never used and now I want to try it with my palette 😊
Mixing, not missing.
You are an inspiration. Interesting that you dont pre-tint your canvas .. I do, but never feel right about it! Not gonna do it anymore 😄 If you ever want to paint in the Dordogne..I live here.
Hello, please let me know your name 💫I occasionally use a tinted board maybe for a sunset. I find the colours are cleaner and brighter on a white board but you do have to work hard at covering the white as when it shows through the painting it can be distracting!
Nice offer re the Dordogne, it’s a beautiful area. Thank you 🙏 best wishes Clare
great demo! Thank you. Curious to know what you use for a medium?
Thank you Jason, I use turps to thin the paint mainly in the beginning stage.
Maravilha muito bom
Thank yuo Vanderlei!
Beautiful piece of work, Thank you for sharing. I am impressed with the kings blue deep colour, is it a Michael Harding paint?
Ken Russell
Hi Ken thank you. The Kings Blue Deep is jackson’s Art Professional oil paint. It’s a great colour!!
In cold weather do you ever use linseed oil to thin out your paint to allow the paint to spread easier?
Hi Jack no I just use turps. It can get a bit oily and shiny for me otherwise. Thanks 😊
lovely atmosphere and subject - trying to learn plein air myself - looking for tips:)
Thank you Robin, there are lots of tips on my channel. I hope you find them helpful.
Catching a pokemon ❌
Catching a sunrise✔️
👏👏👏
❤❤❤👏👏🙏🙏
Thank you 😊
it is a great demo before sunrise , you must put lofs of effeots into this video, also I wonder how Turner will do such plein air, he does not have those equipments we have today
Hi Colin, Im sorry I somehow missed your comment. Yes it is a thought how the Masters would paint today with the new equipment we have! :-)
Good Morning, Claire. Lovely painting. Thank you for sharing your process for plein air painting. It was so lovely to watch.
May I ask please about the little palette tray you use? What is it called, and the brand? How nice to be able to just pop it onto your pochade and start painting.
Thanks again for the video.
Hi Kellie, thanks for watching, I’m so pleased you enjoyed it! It’s called a Palette Garage from the USA. They sadly don’t ship to the Uk. Hope this helps. Best wishes Clare
Kellie, I made one from a piece of L shaped angle profile (can get metal or plastic) from b&q. They come in 1m lengths so need to cut to size. You can then add rubber feet or even Velcro to allow it to sit nicely on your palette. Works a treat.
@@kennethcole862 Yes, sometimes the best stuff is home made. Just analyze the need and make it, or have it made, or adapt something already made. Best equipment Clare has, the Open Box M easel, the best on the market, hands down, in my opinion. I've had mine, in many sizes they make, since 1999!! ;D
Bonjour Claire, toujours enchanté de regarder vos vidéos. À quand Svp une nouvelle vidéo sur RUclips. Sympathie à vous et à votre mari. A très vite j'espère sur RUclips. Roger.
Hi Roger, pleased you have enjoyed the videos! Do you follow me on Instagram - clarebowenartist? I have a few short videos on there. I’m planning a live demo later this year. Showing my painting process & you can ask questions. Dm me if you want to go on the list to be notified of the date.
I like the idea of using red greens to complement other greens. I'm guessing this would be done in foregrounds?
Hello, yes I use a lot of complimentary reds in my greens. Varying the reds used too - from Burnt Sienna to scarlet red. Does work well int he foreground.
Hi Clare is it always best to mix paints up first?
Hi Denise, if you know the colours that are going to be in the painting such as a sunrise, then of course one can be ready with the colours already mixed as the subject is so fleeting, otherwise not. 🎨😊
Please make a video about your paints .
What sort of video would you like about my paints? Brand, colours, mixing?
Great painting , it might be the video but the tonal value of the water appears to be too high compared to the sky.
Hi Philip Thank you for your thoughts. It's hard to get the tonal values of the painting and scenery behind in the video! Hope you enjoyed it though :-)
what is a paint box
My paint box is called a palette garage from great art tool USA 🎨
I would be wearing so many layers of clothings that I couldnt paint in the cold lol
I was waring so much! But still got very cold 🥶
@@ClareBowenArtist Yes, painting in the cold especially in the snow, where I did years ago, at Lake Tahoe, makes you appreciate the taste of bourbon or brandy!! LOL ;D
Looks a lot like Isaac Levitan's paintings.
Thank you! Levitan was a wonderful painter, kind of you to make a comparison! 👩🏻🎨❤️
Have u considered setting up a Pateron account??
Hi Pedro, thank you very much for suggesting that! I have signed up for 'Buy me a Coffee', it's on my RUclips banner. I'll have a go at setting up a Patreon account too, it can't hurt and may even help :-) best wishes to you and thank you for your support, Clare
Hi Pedro, I've just set it up...thank you for the encouragement! :-)
It seems as you are out early morning for duck hunting.
Lol no duck hunting here only painting :-)
@@ClareBowenArtist Yes! No ducks were harmed in the making of this video, eh! LOL ;D
Omg that's so hard U hardly have light
👩🏻🎨😊♥️
You are painting what you know and not what you see.
Hi there, it's a common thing that people do. As we think we know what something looks like so we don't look at the subject! Thank you for your input. Best wishes, Clare
