I'm not a Zulu or English speaker but I always remember my grandpa who was listening to Johnny songs every day...

Some may say that the "star maker machine" did not bless the career of J Clegg. But those familiar w/ him, like myself, can watch this nigh on a dozen times, & wonder why his fame has not yet exploded ??? I continue to marvel at how long it takes for humanity to recognize & revere novel greatness. RIP Umfoethu !!!

The American, western, establishment will never acknowledge the brilliance of what, in their arrogance, they call the "third world", or " the developing world" never realizing that they are a deformed child of that amazing ancient heritage.

So glad to have found all this today. It makes my heart break to see how few people have been here, and 73 likes?!?! I think there's only a tiny sliver, or percentage of people who've ever been lucky enough to hear his music. I just ordered a CD online, and hope to get more. I might try playing one of my LPs on my record player today!! LOVE JOHNNY CLEGG AND ALL HIS MUSICIANS AND SONGS!

Hi friend , some 20 + years ago our son and friends entertained parents and pals on our small stoep in Selebi Phikwe , Botswana ...an amazing perfomance with Johnny blazing away , and the youngsters wearing skinny pants with prints of ..elephants , lions etc...doing their act to Johnny's vibes..... absolutely wonderful ❤.
Youngsters in UK now miss them so much , but , treasure memories so much , always .
      Thank you Johnny xxxx

I'm only finding Johnny Clegg now and feel like it's something that I should have known for most of my life. I wish I knew of him while I was in SA in 2018. His music touches my soul and makes me proud of my heritage. RIP

Johnny Clegg was not just a great singer-songwriter, storyteller, lover of the indigenous cultures of South Africa, anthropologist, teacher -- he was also a leading citizen of SA civil society and a role model of citizenship for all.

I am an American who discovered Johnny and Juluka while living in Italy. I have followed him over the years. I am not sure which I enjoy more - his songs or his stories. And then there is his dancing. An incredible human being. I see him as a figure similar to our Benjamin Franklin. He played an important cultural role in the birth of his nation. R.I.P. Johnny.

This vid caused me to play hookie again ! I intended to play this in the background while i did sth 'productive', but these tunes are too magnetic, & commanding of devoted attention. They may have only sold 5 million albums, but their legacy will grow, & become more profound over time, or the forces of darkness & jingoism will prevail. I wish & pray (Ironic words for an agnostic) to live in a world of brightness & warmth of the embrace of all humanity, in the recognition that we are one family, crossing that burning water.......

I’ve avoided watching this too often, as I felt this audience was half-dead and unresponsive. I don’t know why, because they’re a mixed audience, racially and generationally. Then again, maybe my perception was flawed. I don’t know. In so many videos of Johnny, people have been much more responsive: both in SA and abroad. I also know this was after the American leg of the final journey tour- his cancer had returned quite strongly. I can’t help wondering how he felt during this concert, and feeling upset that these South Africans in this audience, seemed so apathetic and almost unappreciative. Anyone share this view, or think I’m wrong, though after ‘ Scatterlings’ etc. they seem to ‘warm up’?
But I agree it was a great performance and he never gave up on that audience- bless him 😍❤️🔥💔!

What U said ! But I think that the sound on this vid did not include the audience very much, but they could have been more into it. I think they will kick themselves in retrospect......

Not at all. There wasn't wild screaming and dancing going on. But as a fellow South African I feel there was significant appreciation and response. This was not a concert, but an awards ceremony after all ;)
I find the sound "capture" was more focused on him than on the crowd's response. This in my opinion was appropriate ;)
Screaming and being loud cannot always gauge appreciation after all.
I am sure that those who were there and listening would have been touched by his wise words and will most definitely not regret being there.

I'm a big Johnny fan...and I always enjoy his music, no matter how it is presented. But the drummer in this performance needs some lessons, the sound man needs to be fired, and this audience is just sad...
