I'm a lifelong scientist and engineer...also highly educated. Around the time when the fires started happening around 2016, I felt compelled to investigate and examine the climate data and I did a deep dive into the peer reviewed scientific literature. Prior to this, I was aware of climate change for more than 30 years but up to this point, it seemed gradual and linear. Not anymore. To my horror, I reached the same conclusion as Eliot. This was soul crushing. It took me 3 years of deep grief work before I could accept the reality of our near term demise from abrupt climate change. Am I a doomer? I am a realist who is responding realistically to the facts and the data. People in denial are simply too weak to face the horrible truth. Truth is, we will be lucky if a single human being remains on Earth by 2030.

Thanks Eliot and SWU for the interview. It's a good clarification on what someone who calls themselves a doomer envisions of the world.
As much as I appreciate those who have a breadth of knowledge, I find the lack of specificity here to be somewhat questionable. I'm not sure if Eliot came unprepared, or was tired in some way - and I get that he doesn't actively do research - but it comes off to me as being lopsidedly anecdotal. I'd recommend listeners to supplement this kind of predictive/future information from anyone (doomers or not) with the source research/material so your brain forms the structures needed to understand what is really being talked about. We need people, as Eliot expressed, who love humans, life, and nature. But we also need people who can grasp situational and ambiguous complexity, who can develop wisdom, and help form effective and robust solutions to mitigate the horror we are diving into.

People should not panick about everything going on, but put all their trust in Jesus. We humans cannot repair the world, only God will repair it.
We can do what we can here and there, but we CANNOT save a world we did not create.
Put your trust in Jesus, He is coming back soon to create a New perfect world and those only those who trust in him will be there.

A really interesting video - thank you! Incidental: We were taught that the old exhortation, 'Carpe diem' ('Seize the day') isn't meant to encourage abuse or misappropriation of resources, but rather to avoid (by means of such lapses as inattention or neglect) letting time-sensitive opportunities slip away (e.g., losing situational awareness in a football game; forgetting that schoolwork's really best turned in before deadlines; not stopping to consider possible fallout from adverse lifestyles; losing a safety mindset while driving, etc.). (The basic message was that without something approximating an in-the-moment connection with the world around us, the task of making good (or timely) (or useful) (or societally-conscious) decisions often gets short-circuited.) In any event, thank you again for this interesting video!

Well with the unelected Plutocratic Oligarch in charge of the UK (Fishi Rishi as PM) I'd say the beginning of the end has well and truly started.
The Tories have been crashing the UK for 12 yrs now. Dismantling and destroying everything, from crashing the economy to destroying all our public services. And their Brexit followers and supporters tend to also be climate crisis deniers, covid deniers and anti-vaxxers etc etc.

A lot of great points. The damage was done a long time ago, we didn't start it and we, the people alive now, might not finish it. Many people believe the end, Armageddon (the battle at Har Megiddo) is going to be over in one day. It took a long time to get where we are, even longer to finish it. It won't be that all of a sudden there's no more people, we'll go in groups.

People need to know how horrible the effects really are, and I'm not living in silence anymore. My blood father was my predator, and sadly I wasn't his only victim. Restricting free speech on Twitter is not prohibiting the disclosure of the location of a security-related person.
