Ambition is narrow. Strive for meaning. We want our lives to be meaningful. And ther are beautifully ordinary ways to do that. To take care of our parents. To take care of ourselves. To earn just enough money to have a decent ordinary life. To be kind. To do nothing but just be who we are. Build meaning. Whatever that might be for you. ❤
There’s such beauty in ordinary. The older I get the more I celebrate the ordinariness of life. The same coffee every morning in the same comfy but ordinary chair with my cute but ordinary dogs. Ordinary is synonymous with making peace with yourself.
wow! love how you phrased that. I just turned 34 last week, i think i'm still living in the "clowning around" phase, it's fading but i still think nothing ordinary is enough for me, how does it feel when you're 40?
If I went to church, this is the kind of message I would want to hear, not that crap they spew from the pulpits. This is the most helpful "sermon" I've ever heard.
@Torrey, I am a Christian who listens to de Boton .. and its sad that a philosopher sounds more credible than the preacherman - its a sad time for the church.
Honestly, this is closer to the message of Christ Jesus than the garbage spread by most of Christianity. The Prosperity Gospel, for example, is the exact opposite of what Yeshua (Jesus) actually taught, according to the Bible itself. Jesus said that the wealthy have their reward in this life, and that its easier for a rope to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into Heaven, yet so many people still believe that wealth is a sign of God's favor. (I'm Buddhist, not Christian, but got my Batchelor's in the academic study of religion.)
perfect! I wish one of my good friends who took his own life had heard this, before he committed suicide, for the same reasons you mention. He would be alive now. His family would be happy. Hope your messages spread all around the world and you save many lives Alain. Thank you
Well, I wouldn't be so sure. I've listened to this dozens of times and still ponder ending my life. The knowledge that you're statistically likely to lead an ordinary life isn't very helpful when you spend all your time alone or when women pass you by because you don't make a 6 or 7 figure income. The loneliness, the alienation and being discounted for absurd reasons are what leads to thoughts of death. Nobody is meant to go through life with such strong feeling of loneliness. I am very sorry about your friend though.
Wow, just wow I've been watching his videos for a year now, and I have to say this video sums up his ideas on life clearly. Thanks. And thanks to RUclips algorithm for showing me this 😁
I wish I could be ordinary... I am chaos, surreal situations and depressive weeks in bed crying. If you have an ordinary life congrats, you have found balance and you are probably happy or at least not unhappy, keep it yhat way.
I am in tears, this is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard...it's pure art in some of the finest senses...absolutely amazing man to share this with us all :)
Social media creates a surreal standard obtained by few people. Making millions of people discontent, who attempt to comfort themselves w fashion, plastic surgery, alcohol, antidepressants, sex, etc.
There's a difference between loving yourself and being content with being ordinary. I personally love myself but despise the idea of being ordinary. Don't let yourself become content where you are in life, always strive for more.
@@Blake-pn6xm Why? Sounds like an empty hole that will never be filled. Doing new things and improving in the things we love are wonderful but why "Despise" ordinariness when you are ordinary in most areas of your life. Without the Ordinary the Extraordinary would be meaningless and the idea that it should be despised is like the Flower despising the dirt.
when I was younger I used to tell my dad "watch out, I'll be on that stage singing and everybody will see me" ...I didn't know how empty I was as a kid
So fantastic! 😁🎉 This is the most beautiful antidote and compassionate view of life, in what seems like a burgeoning world of narcissists. Oh for education on the merits of humble everyday contentment.
People need a basic income. Poverty and a lack of cash are the biggest causes of misery on the planet. Solve them and then the world can be a more calm peaceful place.
*The idea that anyone can achieve anything is a dangerous idea* I fucking love it ! Oh god if only I knew it earlier. This is something tht I've started to realise in the last few months. I am 21 and the constant press of becoming extremely successful and all that bullshit is just nonsense to me. I just want a simple , descent and ordinary life.
Would it have credibility if a poor person told you that wealth is not everything? Does it make sense for someone who hasn't experienced wealth to say it's not worth it?
@@micmo6640 What about people like me who have experienced both and rejected both and have chosen to be in the middle, leading a life of minimalism and balance? Does our word have no value then?
@@ladybookworms That would clearly depend on the order of experience. The odds of rejection of wealth I would deem rather delimited, though. Also people rejecting poverty looks like a rather original concept.
Disagree with one of the first points. Saying someone buying a sports car lacks love is another form of snobbery and judgment. Maybe some people buy sportscars out of boredom or wanting something that is fun?

It is actually wonderfully cool to be ordinary. I am discovering it after 40 years of clowning around ^^
I hate being ordinary
Hear, hear!! There is a calming freedom in accepting that one is ordinary and that it’s OK. 😀
Yeah it is coool

this is a joke right?
I misread ‘lesser people’ for a moment. 😆 I think the commenter meant ‘less people.’ 👀
Being OK with being just OK takes all the pressure off of you and you can truly be free. It's wonderful

I dont think its because of social media. People were dissatisfied just the same before the internet even existed.

One of the best talks I’ve heard ! Ordinary love, ordinary life and ordinary existence is our reality let’s be ok with that 👌
I needed to hear this from someone else. How soothing.
when I was younger I used to tell my dad "watch out, I'll be on that stage singing and everybody will see me" ...I didn't know how empty I was as a kid
Such an important message...huge respect to him for expressing this
wow wow!!! this is so underrated!!!! like why doesn't the entire work listens to this!!!!!

He has a youtube channel called The School of Life, and its very popular
Realistic, compassionate, and truly needed for our times.hope it goes viral.

Thank you so much! Also the english is easier to understund in comparation to school of life so we can understund it! Thank you!
True English isn't my first language and I find difficulties coping up with videos from the school of life channel
Wonderful depth & insight !

Advice is cheap. Supply far exceeds demand. Especially when it comes from someone born rich telling others that wealth is not everything.
