When the Aftermarket Fails: Fitting "NEW" trunk hinges
HTML-код

- We've all been there - the aftermarket has a much needed part like a hinge that will solve all your panel fitment problems. Then the part simply doesn't work and your build is back to using parts that should be in the recycle bin. That's where what I'm up to right now.

Massive amount of work, glad you got there in the end! And, yes, you will make 100K
Thanks...if I hit 50K I'll make my own damn button thingy.
I thought about your channel just yesterday, hoping you hadn’t stopped, and some new content would come soon.
Thanks for uploading!👍🏻
Thanks for tuning in - I hope to be back on a regular schedule for releasing content.
After all the work you've put in on those hinges, you've managed to find time to level up the computer graphics. The addition of the pink arrow was a thing of CGI beauty. 🎯
LOL - it will never be a perfect production. It's hard enough to build a car without the cameras and lights in the way!
At least 42.1thousand of us know you did some work to them.... Great video.
Thanks 👍
As they say , it’s all in the details 👍👍👍😎. Excellent work 👌🇦🇺
Thank you! Cheers! The most interesting part of any build is the attention to detail.
You are a beast Craig. I loved the part with the hidden damage. My 69 Datsun roadster took a hit on the left front corner. It was poorly repaired but I didn't think it was a big deal. Well when I pulled the dash and the sheet metal was tweaked on the back of that it was an ah oh moment. Anyway it turned out the windshield frame had been replaced, the door post was down and twisted etc. All fixed now but yeah. You get the picture. Keep on keeping on. Great video.
Thanks Chris. It makes so much more sense now that I've found the damage. The trunk used to leak exhaust fumes and the old panel was pretty dented from being walked on and slammed. It's nice to work out the why that things don't work on these rolling monuments to history.
You're an absolute monster, I love the level you take literally everything you do to this build. Bespoke everything.
I did try to just buy new hinges...honest!
@@ThrottleStopGarage touché! Funny how that stuff works out though. Where are those hinges manufactured? I wonder if it's the fault of the aftermarket manufacturer or more so the discrepancy between amazons. Either way, you killed it.
@@Florida_as_FuckThey didn't say where they were built, but they look exactly like the originals (minus the details - clearly) - my guess is Sweden. I'd report it back to the vendor, but I find they're not really very interested.
@@ThrottleStopGarage I've got a feeling these hinges aren't one of their hot sellers. How many Amazon's were actually produced? Sure, I know I could ask google right now and get a decent enough answer but that's not as entertaining.
@Brandon David 670k cars total...the crazy part is how many still exist. Mine is in reasonable shape and I've worked o a few in much worse shape. Volvo does a great job taking care of their customers in the vintage market. In my opinion, no other car company does as much to provide their vintage customers parts. These were a fail, but that is odd.
aggravating little fiddly bits take up a huge amount of time, glad to see it worked out pretty well even if it did open up a whole new side project.
It was good to be done and happy with the result.
Good to see I’m not alone in diving deep into, what others might think is, pointless details. Well done and thanks! 😎👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it. It's all pointless until it's painted and you can't unsee the flaws!
That is some great work! Keep it up! Going to be a sad day when you finish it!
Sad? Not at all! In the immortal words of Master Yoda - "There is another..."
Nice meticulous work! Keep on the good work it's coming along.
Thank you very much!
Hot damn, you're spoiling us!
I honestly thought this video would take a week...not a month. It took me a while to work out how the heck to get these nailed down!
awesome video as always, that pesky algorithm makes no sense. Aftermarket parts really are a crap shoot as to whether there going to be any good, lucky your a patient man they came out looking really good.
Generally, the Volvo parts from Volvo are excellent. Most of the aftermarket is at least good quality. These were just so far off - a first for me with this car.
Love your content. Just to let you know I have really enjoyed watching all your build videos. Your ocd really makes for a great product.
Thanks for the kind words. I'll keep at it.
@@ThrottleStopGarage as an explanation I am disabled now. I used to work in my shop every day and I miss it. Watching content that you put out really gives me something to look forward to. You and others like you channel are very helpful to my mental health thank you. Os in spit of you being a Canadian just a joke
I'm sorry to hear that you're not able to work in your shop but your comment has made my day. I'm very happy to be able to provide something for you to look forward to and that you find this valuable. That's very important to me.
Enough to drive a sane man crazy.
The hinges were doing a damn good job until I hopped in the trunk and figured out why it wasn't working!
Throttle Stop Garage ...... the undisputed definition of TENACITY. 👍👍😎👍👍 Great to see your doing well. It's weird..... even when you haven't posted I still feel guilty I'm not working hard enough on my own projects. 😁
There is a lot of joy in plugging away at these little things. It feels pretty good when you get it working and it looks just right.
I’m wondering. How many times did you consider not really needing an opening trunk lid? Lol. Always love the level of detail you put into your videos. Keeps me inspired to get another job done on my project.
Thanks - I never considered it...I have to have somewhere to put hockey equipment and golf clubs.
Looks great.
I finally bought a new welding helmet that came with a cheater lens and you got a light on your helmet 😮.
I like the cheater when I am wearing my contacts but when I'm wearing my glasses, I'm so used to looking over them close up that it gets weird. I think the biggest thing is I can see through this new helmet, my old one was horrible.
When I was younger, I'd laugh at guys that had a cheater...now I couldn't weld without one! The light was installed a year or so ago on that hood. It works great but the lens is a cheapo replacement and I really should ditch that hood but the head gear is so comfortable. I only wear this one for MIG/Stick and the Lincoln Viking 3550 for TIG - it's shocking how clear that thing is.
You will know and that's what counts. Because every time you look at that car, you'll see what you should have done, not what you have done, which is the reality of building something.
100% this...if there is something I could have fixed that I didn't fix it will gnaw at me.
I love your videos, Craig. Your build is of the particular kind of insanity that speaks to me and pushes me to go work on my project. Keep it going!
Thanks - having you folks watching gives me inspiration and the occasional kick in the pants to get work done!
What did you say in the beginning? "It's not worth fixing"? Famous last words! :)
Just barely not worth fixing...LOL
Your' worthy + 100.000 subs! Compered to other Channels like yours!
Appreciate that
Around the moment that you took out the digital level I was screaming at the screen: "Cut it in half and tack it in situ !!!"... And then you did 😁 As always you fix it until it is perfect. I think that you deserve 100k subscribers. A huge 👍
Next time yell louder so I can hear it! It took me a week to come to that conclusion.
@@ThrottleStopGarage 😆It sounds very familiar. I often make the ideas in my head far more complicated than it needs to be, and I will be thinking about a concept for a very long time, and all the sudden I see the light and then I ask myself, what was I thinking?
@insAneTunA I didn't leave it in the final cut, but on four separate occasions I went over the trunk fitment problems. It did make sense with the previous light damage, but I was in a loop for a while over what was going on. LOL 😆
Love your work!
Thank you!
You certainly deserve to put your feet up for 5 mins after that marathon. What patience !
Did you consider grinding down the thickness of the torsion springs to compensate for the lighter boot lid ?
I did consider ways to weaken the spring, I was pretty confident that I'd make a mess of it! So gas springs it is.
Amazing getting a sponsor super excited for you. What do you conto calculate the nm strength of the gas lifters.
Yup - it was very kind of them to give me some support. The next video covers what I did to compute the forces involved for the trunk. I'm now working on the hood hinge. Stay tuned.
If it's good enough for Tesla it could use a bit more fitment. Fantastic video.
Thanks.
I wonder if you could have taken out the pin of the old one Then redrill it to the correct size put a new pin and new bushing in.
Yes - I think so. When the hinges were only $50 and they looked perfect. So I thought I'd take the easy way out for a change. Oops.
That kind of alignment problems would do my head in.
Not enough metal capacity I think, to hunt actual problem down...
It's never easy.
Carbon rear quarters maybe?
I thought about it and they're complicated and multiple pieces and I think it's just easier to do the modifications I want in steel and be done with it.
Sod that...Me, I would have glued the lid in place, never to be opened again!!
But where would I put my luggage? Hmmm...the back seat would have worked. LOL.
Uh, I was going into withdrawal. yay!
I hope to be more consistent coming up. When these little jobs turn into nightmares, it takes longer than I'd like, but it has to get done.
Craig, I thought for sure you where going to rebuild/rebush the hinge pins. I'm still not sure why you didn't, was it ever a consideration?
Sure Alan - the stock hinge was not able to adjust the trunk any more forward where it needed to go and was a little high. Either way, the arm would have required cutting to fit and not having to fix the pivot saved work. At least that's what I'm telling myself.
One method would have been to fix the original ones, they´r are usually better as aftermarket items anyway.
Normally - but with the non-stock trunk, it all needed to happen anyway.
@@ThrottleStopGarage Yea its never easy, I have been making hinges for kit cars for a while and have beveloped a method that gets the job done quickly. I make the hinge and brackets out of carbon fibre.
@@h-j.k.8971 Those sound very cool.
Seems like it would have been easier to repair the oem parts.
Nope - they still would have needed to be cut to fit as they were out of adjustment room to get the lid to fit.
You obviously need more tools. A welder that can tack weld a carbon fiber lid to the steel body in order to establish the gaps.
I think that's just glue Ken!
Amazon hinges for Amazon?
Not from Amazon...that would be funny.
