Adding Gas Springs to Car Hinges...when you just need a lift.

- In this episode I show how I've added some gas springs to help hold the carbon fiber trunk up. It's a pretty simple thing to do as long as you know how to size the spring correctly.

Missed the last one somehow, so went back and watched first. Really nice work and, as usual, great explanations!
Thanks - I was pretty stuck at work and not much has gone on lately in the garage. These stupid hinges also took way to long to fix.
Sorry - late to the party for this episode, but man...o...man, it sure was worth the wait. Nice job. 👍👍
Funny Story - My wife just happened to stop by while I was enjoying the engineering portion and she asked me what the heck I was watching? I simply told her I was watching to make sure you were summing the moments properly in your weight and balance calculation 😂. She said .... what?? Well, I said, my friend Craig is trying to size the gas springs he needs to replace the OEM torsion spring now that the carbon fiber trunk lid is so much lighter. She rolled her eyes and walked off. Thanks for giving my wife and I something to talk about 🤣😂🤣
My wife has a look...she's listening - but not really. She's happier that way. Wait until the hood hinge! 6 bar linkages with 7 pivots and one degree of freedom. Yikes.
I made my own carbon hood.
Instead of 2 fully working gas springs, I bought 2 original, that did not hold one hud open, used one and works perfectly fine.
from 23kg to 3.
I never thought of using just one of the torsion springs...it probably would have worked!
It certainly does take a lot of work making these videos and working on the cars and/or projects. Appreciate the video, thanks for sharing
Cheers. For me, that's what is important...the sharing.
Well done, showing the mistakes is always good
Thanks. We all make mistakes.
Nice one....not quite sure why you didn't go with a bog standard spring sized to the boot lid weight. That said, now I know how to calculate strut sizes.
As always a great video (warts and all), thanks for sharing
It's not like I can get these springs in different weights. It also cleans up the look of the trunk/boot of the car.
Great video and thanks for sharing

Thanks for watching!
Well done!
Thanks.
Appreciate the work, you're doing to get the work out to us. And appreciate that it is a mountain of work doing a project, like your, plus the youtube stuff. Phew, tired just typing it!
Thanks - much appreciated. It's good to get a conversation going in the comments.
Craig, if those 40# springs are too heavy and the 30# are too light just stay with the 40's and add weight to the trunk lid, that'll fix it for ya'!! 😂 But seriously I get tired of trying to come up with new superlatives for your work, how about "nice" ? So does this ever happen to you? Your sitting having dinner with your wife and she asks, "what are you thinking about ?" So you tell her "I'm trying to calculate the length of spring and the force required to lift the trunk lid on the car now that I've redone the geometry of the hinge points."
I got a text from a friend yesterday saying I could have put in a 30 and a 40 and got the right value. There is always someone that can find a better solution. My long-suffering wife experiences this conversation daily. She will also randomly blow away unsuspecting "car-guys" trying to man-splain some car thing that they think they understand.
Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks for watching!
I just made my first order from SCS, wish I'd known about the discount code! lol
It's there for your second order!
Get a redline powder gun "EZ50 Redline powder coating gun", a larger oven, you can make yourself. Interweb has tons of designs. Don't touch the part bare handed after out gassing. For pressure use a DeVilbiss 803643 80 CFM Air Filter Cleaner with Regulator Amazon, and a half inch air line to run from it. For small parts like you are doing make a small vent hood you can move behind your spray stream to save on cleaning. I know finding a place for a larger oven is a pain, but the extra maneuvering space is worth it.
Thanks for the tips. I'm looking the gun up now. I've got a Devilbiss dryer/regulator after my air cooler, I need a lower pressure gauge on the gun I guess.
Your pressure is really high, ignore the psi and turn it down until you have a decent powder cloud. If your thinking of upgrading your gun I have a spare decent setup that your welcome to.
@@bake162 Thanks - I'm for sure interested in the upgrade. DM me on instagram and we can discuss.
Nice work mate.
Thanks!
Starting building a front chssis section... for a MK2 Triumph Stag to take a BMW 4.4 V8 engine...here in the UK. where did you get your chassis frame rails
I had them bent by Art Morrison in the USA. Stay tuned, I'm about to cut those off and do this all again...unfortunately.
I think that it couldn't look any better than that. And I also didn't have to yell at the screen this episode 😁👍
Glad to hear you weren't yelling! I'm very happy with how it all worked out.
From what I've seen with powder coating the paint/powder comes out like a fog more than a stream.
I've tried various mods on this gun and I still think I need to get the regulator to dial the pressure down. It could also be that epoxy sprays differently. I don't know. I'm amazed at how forgiving it is to spray.
My powder coater (CJ Ward enamelers Burton on Trent UK) just drifts the powder from the gun. It’s literally pulled into the work by electrostatic force. The powder has an electrical insulating effect so the thickness is governed by the charge potential.
He also uses a zinc passivate dip on all ferrous parts. His work has lasted much better than anything done elsewhere.
@@davidelliott5843 Not sure how I'd do this at home. I've got.a new PC system and it's working great.
you didnt warn us that there would be MATH... even metric/banana conversion maths!
LOL - in the next video, I'll show you how to fake calculate the resultant forces in a 6-bar linkage. Stay tuned...
That's a really good free body diagram. What do you do?
I'm a scientist.
@@ThrottleStopGarage so probably guilty of sitting through a physics class or 2. Checks out
Craig, how can I reach you ? Do you have a website for the store I’m in the United States I need your help regarding a part you recently made
You can contact me on Instagram DM. I don't sell parts etc. but I'm happy to help if I can.
@@ThrottleStopGarage You made a set of brackets for Steve l322 Range Rover from Shedlock2000 he said to contact you if I need a set I have the same setup but I’m missing the brackets you made for him, please help me get the brackets and thanks for the reply without the brackets I can’t use the D5 roof rack that I have thanks
👍🏼👌🤙
Cheers!
Why not just get a less powerfull spring?
I'd have to build the spring either way and getting torsion springs right isn't something I know anything about!
