- Several times in the South China Sea this year, China's maritime militia and coast guard vessels, including the 5901 “Monster Ship” entered Vietnam’s Exclusive Economic Zone close to offshore oil and gas fields. Five years ago, Vanguard Bank in the western Spratlys was the site of an intense standoff between China and Vietnam that lasted three months. Does this help explain the relationship between Vietnam and Russia, whose oil and gas joint ventures have produced 250 million tons of oil? Today, we look into Vietnam’s partnership with Russia, whether it acts as a hedge against China and the U.S., and whether Hanoi is skillfully balancing all these great powers through its "bamboo diplomacy."

* For thousands years in history, the Vietnamese had must fought with Mongol, China, France, Japan, US and US’s allies (Korean, Thailand, Philippine, England, Australia, New Zealand v.v ) and with Red China and its allies (Khmer Rouge, Thailand, Singapore), many many generations have been destroyed in those wars.
* So now instead of finding enemies, the Vietnamese want to live in peace, develop country, take care for our old parents, young children and make friend with other nations.

Vietnam doesn’t like China but it is a neighbour that Vietnam have to coexist first. When it come push to shove, Vietnam cannot rely on Russia, USA or any other country to assist it. Look at Sino-Vietnamese border war in 1979, for example.

Vietnam have been fighting against China for thousands of years, and Vietnam have always prepared well for unexpected act from its neighbors.
Countries be like: "Friends to All, Enemies to None... except this certain country that I can pinpoint but not say because we have ties as well."
After defeated the USA during the Vietnam War with the help from Russia and China, VN is no longer having any enemy . Now it is the time to rebuild and VN needs all the helps they can get including from its former defeated enemy like the US. However, VN should be extremely carefully when dealing with the US,a warmongering nation. The US will not help VN economically without a condition and we all know what that is, to contain China.

@@binhthanh6561 As I know we Philippines never fuaght in Vietnam, America was asking us but we never did, instead we send nurse and doctors and engineers to repair infrastructure and help people who were sick, in fact U.S got angry at us for our deccesion.

@@timawa22 First of all, we Vietnamese are always grateful that the Philippines supported the Vietnamese boat-people and was the first capitalist country in the world after 1975 to open commercial flights to Vietnam during the period when Vietnam was under a strict embargo by the United States, and today we are brothers and friends in the ASEAN community.

However, history is history, the truth is that the Philippines was an ally of the United States during the Vietnam War with about 2,000 soldiers in the PHILCAG-V force including an engineering battalion, medical and rural community development teams, a security battalion, a field artillery battery, and a logistics and headquarters unit (of course, in war, not all soldiers are ground combat forces, right?)

North Vietnam was betrayed by it allied aka soviet and china in 1954 when they force us to sign the deal that doesn't benefit us
