I have 2 Old lanterns just like this one that you are restoring. Before I retired I was a Caregiver for an elderly couple and the husband had these two lanterns in a closet. I happened to ask him what he planned on doing with them and he said he had no plans. Asked me what I planned on doing with them and I said hang them up in my living room. Which is where they are hanging still on this day 7/15/2023. They were the gentlemen’s fathers lanterns from when he worked on the railroads in California. I am so proud to be the owner of them now. It’s history for me.
in the mid1970s i inherited my grandfather's lantern which was very much like this. it had no globe, and i never knew what to do with it. i think i gave it away in the 1980s, but wish i still had it fully restored.
