- I restored a 1969 Honda CB750 Sandcast in my tiny garage and captured it with my iPhone. You can see more of my work at my website: www.ujenimotors.com
Answers to a few common questions:
1. Indeed, I did use the original pistons. They were undamaged and showed no signs of abuse. They were easily within spec too. I cleaned them gently, installed fresh rings, honed the cylinders and ended up with a fantastic engine. Granted, they aren't shiny, but I try not to replace original Honda components when I don't have to.
2. The red paint inside the engine cases is Glyptol. Its an engine epoxy that is used to seal the engine (sandcasts have been known to leak through the porous walls). Glyptol also speeds up the flow of oil which makes the engine run cooler. Got the tip from Vic World many years ago. I've done this on many engines and never had an issue.
3. The cost to restore a bike like this really depends on how much you can do yourself. I was going for a show-level restoration and I am able to do almost all of the work myself (not metal plating or machine work). Depending on the condition of the bike being restored, I would say a restoration like this costs between $10k to $25k. Not including labor :)
4. This is indeed the bike that won Best of Show at the 2019 Quail Motorcycle Gathering. I'm still in shock!
5. Though I will sell the bike someday, it is not currently for sale. Авто/Мото
Rode the Brit Triumphs for years and a can still remember the day in 1970 when I first got the keys to a K1. The quantum step up was exhilarating and the ride, the controls, the sound and the acceleration are imprinted on my mind. I road them on country and city roads in hot and cold, wet and dry, and they never let me down, and I never lost my love for these machines. Many years and many cars and bikes later, on retirement, I picked up a roughy and did the same as above. It never goes away. Great video.
It’s so amazing to watch how skilled some people are.
love to see you here
That was amazing
it's so nice to watch your videos as this one :D
Instablaster.
The most perfect motorcycle ever built in this guy’s opinion. I am so impressed, and SO jealous!!
That was the bike that started it all. A fine motorcycle indeed.
it was a great bike for it's time, but not the most perfect motorcycle. How could it be? Nothing has advanced since then? JMO
@@nothankyou5524 I think what he meant was, it was the perfect bike to start a revolution. This model, the CB750 nearly put the entire British and European big bike markets out of business. When this bike showed up, literally every manufacturer had to either rethink and rebrand or risk going belly up. So, yes, without this perfect bike, we would not have the innovation and excitement we have today in motorcycling.
@@randytiefenthaler3022 You are right , this and the other japanese bikes were the begining of the end of the british bike industry . They were clever , alot of the time they took british bikes , tore them down , fixed the problems like oil leaks added things like electric start and took the world by storm
R C Nelson it started the four cylinder bike market. But there were some real nice and fast bikes out there. Moto guzzi had a super reliable bike, the V700 at the time. Ducati came out with the 750ss a few years later and guzzi with the v7 sport followed by the series one. These bikes handled better than the cb750 were lighter and just as reliable. At the time the Norton commando was faster than the cog and handled better. I had the cb, commando and the LeMans series one. All great bikes with their own character
Impressive...love that it was returned to what it looked like on the showroom floor in 1969.
It never looked that good even when new
Nice to see another classic brought back to its original glory. Well done!
Toujours "la plus belle moto du monde". Quelle magnifique restauration. Merci Mr Roberts!!!
That just about brought a tear to my eye, such a beautiful rebirth of a classic bike.
Kudos and keep on keeping on!
One of the very best time lapse restoration videos I’ve ever seen - likes the way each restoration stage was titled.
the mechanical and editing skills are so high i couldn't even pretend to imagine how the hell you executed this video so perfectly
Nice to see a good restoration and not a bike destruction to a "cafe racer"
you're such an open minded fella, young sir. let people do what they want.
@@brq838 You're wrong, i'm not a purist, in fact I have a radically customized bike and I love Cafe Racers (but maybe yes, I'm not purist about keeping bikes original but I'm little purist with the styles). I won't tell anyone what to do with his bike and I'm not saying it to anyone in my comment (thought you're exposed to people's opinion if you post or show your bike on internet). I only appreciate a good restoration job because it seems everybody just do 'cafe racers' lately, and not always with a nice result, in my opinion. I hope you can understand my position better now. Cheers
Hard Facts chances are you have neither.
Hard Facts *whether. So much for your grade school level of writing.
Hard Facts nah, you and the other guy could've just made a positive comment about this amazing build without adding your two cents about cafe racers. Nobody, I mean nobody, cares about your opinion on a restoration backto original, cafe, brat, scrambler, and on and on. Just make a nice comment and move along.
This took me back 47 years, I had a 1972 CB750.Damn I miss that bike....It was Gold...
This makes me happy. One of the best things about building and living with these bikes is when it makes someone share a happy memory.
When my brother came back from Nam he bought a new gold -72 CB750. Beautiful. Sadly, he and it are both gone.
Had 2 of these a 1971E and 76K. Takes me back. Its so beautiful what you did.
Stunning resto!! I lusted after this bike back in the day....
BRAVO!!! I could almost shed a tear... Beautiful work
C'mon man! That is a work of art and should sit in a museum. So gorgeous.
How can you ride something that's sitting in a museum? And if you're gonna have it, why wouldn't you be riding it? You build what you like for yourself. Let others build what they like for themselves. Works out ok for me.....
As my Velocette motorcycle guru step brother says,.....ride them and enjoy them, more people who see a bike like that on the road than in any museum.
Simply stunning. Grew up with these. Great to see one come to life before my eyes.
Thank you so much for not turning it into a cafe racer!!! You, sir, are doing a massive favour for the world of classic UJMs.
Wish it would have been a 10 minute video, the replay was just a little too fast to see everything. Almost a little bit dizzying but I'm still thankful for the video. Top notch.
Greezy_Chef you can play it with different speeds... just touch the three points top right.
@@andreashe806 Thank you. Today I learned something
Second time that I have watched this video. Those sand casts when restored are just like a jewel. Stunning!
Wow thats not restoration, thats a 2nd manufacturing resurrection of the bike!!
Wish i had the means to do this on my Suzuki Bandit!
Indeed, it is a rebuild.
You get there mate. You get there.
Bandits get scrapped in Singapore. Be prepared.
Absolutely agree fantastic amazing work!
Awesome
Those posters, that motorcycle, takes me back to the life in yesteryears. Even though I never owned one, I could feel how a owner must have felt when he rode one! Wonderful video, much obliged for making this!
And finally that characteristic unique Honda CB 750 Four-Sound . Sound for the eternity . . .
thanks for showing 👍😍
Amazing to watch, I appreciate the work you did to bring this back to its formal glory. Thank God there are folks like you who enjoy the process as much as the outcome! Everyone wins
This video is the best one on RUclips. There is something truly gratifying about watching a professional restore a forgotten jem from the past. I tooled my girlfriend Sue around Rifle Gap on a Honda CB350 in '76. I miss her. And the bike.
Very kind of you. I love it when one of my bikes reminds people of happy memories!
Wow. Fantastic job. Top quality restoration and top quality video !
Absolutely fantastic!! I had a 1970 model ... all I have left is the cover badge... boy do I regret ever trading it in for a Shadow!!
I remember those as a young man . I used to go to main dealers to look at them all . Well done you ! Brilliant restoration .
You did a stunning job! I wish I had your knowledge and expertise. The 1969 Honda CB 750 is the bike of the century and one of my favorites.
you develop knowledge and expertise by doing. There's no race to completion, so you can always stop and re access, if need be. You can always back up a few steps, and do over, as long as you have the mental discipline to accept having to back up without seeing it as a character flaw.
Get a old bike and get it running. That will give you a decent base of knowledge.
The. You look at what needs fixed. Hand controls replace them, clutch slips get a new one, paints faded strip it and repaint it.
Once you get it where you want it find another and start over.
Sam...wow...I'm so impressed. That is BEAUTIFUL. Wish I had your skill!
Beautiful bike , great video thank you for taking the time to create the video and keep another classic on the road.
Sam, you are a true inspiration to all of the home mechanics out there! This was a beautiful video and this bike turned out great! Thanks for sharing this with the rest of the world.
Very kind of you! Thanks!
Beautiful!
My first super bike I rode was and Honda CB550 Super Sport and I was about 15 years old... I'm going to get one of these again 👍
the cinematography, dayuuuuuum this is beautiful
Before anyone turns one of these into a chopped up, stripped down, cafe racer... they need to watch this video. I love that you're focusing on these specifically. Find something you love and be the best at it! 👍🍻
Damn mister, that's the sharpest restoration I've ever seen.
Also putting the engine on its side and slipping it into the frame is genius.
Great job! I had to watch it at 0.25 speed to make sense of it.
It must be very satisfying to have an intimate knowledge of absolutely every part of the bike.
I was particularly impressed with your work on the tank and the seat.
4:45 THERE ARE THREE OF THIS BEAUTY?!
Wow. Incredible work, amazing videography. Top notch.
Im fortunate to have restored and kept three of them. They are special machines!
AWESOME!! Loved every inch of this video! Sir, you are a artist.
Perfeição.Que restauração !!!! A moto de todos os tempos, com certeza merece este carinho. Parabéns pelo trabalho e pela motocicleta.
BEAUTIFUL! Thanks for letting us hear it. I'll be sending this to a friend that had one of these.
I had one in 1970. Mine was factory bought. yours is MUCH cooler being a "survivor" as they call it.
Excellent work, literally a piece of art. Thanks for sharing!
A work of art by a true artist. Bravo!
Wow, totally amazing to see such a thorough and excellent job done like that!!! I recall being a kid back then and hanging out at a Honda dealership during school lunch break and just staring at these bikes and very much wanting one because they looked so good and were of such great quality!
tears are rolling down my eyes!!! AMAZING WORK!!!
You where Blessed with an amazing talent, Sir. Well done with the fantastic restoration. 👏👏👏👏👏
Results are amazing when there are skilled, talented, passionate, high standards people. What a bloody re manufacture job that was. Gorgeous bike and equally important to preserve such heritage rich and vintage motorcycle. I bow to all involved.
My brother Alan Phillips owned and drove a 1972 Honda CB750 for several years .He still thinks of it often.

HOW CAN THERE BE 62 THUMBS DOWN ON THIS FANTASTIC RESTORATION JOB, GET A LIFE DOWNERS.
Envy is a terrible thing.
I think those people are in need of an attitude adjustment.
What's wrong with some people?
He got one from me for one reason , and its an important one . You do not paint the inside of and engine , any engine . There are very tight oilways in there and when , not if, that starts to come off the casings its going to those oilways and next thing you have a wrecked engine , and before anyone starts with the ''what do you know ''comments, i worked on japanese bikes for quite a while
Restorably Beautiful, a quality most modern bikes don't have.
So happy it wasnt chopped up, and kept pristine and original. Great work.
I like the way you restoration for the CB 750. Classic style is never die!!!
That's neatly restored to its original condition. I liked your sense of theatrics, those looks of nostalgia. Though it was freaking fast, I did enjoy the ride 🏍 😊
Simply brilliant. Great job to restore a gem. Thanks for sharing. Amazing time lapse btw
Your care, patience and meticulous craftsmanship has made this rare and iconic motorcycle look even better than new!
As a former professional motorcycle mechanic and workshop owner it is really good to see your truly outstanding workmanship which has given this beautiful motorcycle a new lease of life after being dormant for so many decades! Subscribed.
Wow, you made my day! Thanks very much for your kind words!
just like the bike i saw at the honda museum. a great display of workmanship. thank you for showing it to us.
She's a beauty!! and sounds so nice,
Great video too, thanks for sharing.
Magnificent, the statement Honda made when they introduced this motorcycle echoes still today
All I can say is: WOW! Such meticulous attention to detail. Makes me want to go find one and do it myself. I had a 1972 K2 and it was my forever favorite. This brought back such beautiful memories.
Glad this brought back good memories. These are special bikes. And a 1972 CB750 won't cost too much! Ride safe!
WOW! That was amazing! The amount of knowledge and skill to refurbish EVERYTHING like that is nothing less than impressive! Honestly, I could not be more impressed. Well, maybe if it flew at the end, that would impress me a bit more.
one of the best thing I've seen in my life! salute sir :)
Dude, that was awesome.
What a beautiful bike.
Very impressive work 👍
An absolutely beautiful restoration of a classic Honda.
Sam Roberts, you are a master. I take a deep bow... this is such a beautiful machine with a complete second life
Beautifully done.. I wish I had your skills.
Great job. Really looks beautiful!
Okay i admit it.... brought a smile to my face when he swung those doors open again at the end! Great job
Nice! I'm still drooling over it after all these years.
Insane skills.....gorgeous bikes!!
Great job on this restoration....fantastic
That was a great video! Thank you for taking the time to make it
Wow, I thought it was a nice bike before you started the restoration, but it's absolutely perfect now. Kudo's to you sir, it's nice to see folks with infinitely more patience (not to mention talent) than me saving bikes from my past. Great job!!
Thanks very much!
Ha! I considered making it more detailed. I have more than ten hours of time lapse footage. It would probably be a sleeping pill to watch it 😜 For example, I painted the tank six times before I got it right. I figured few people would want to see the first five times!!
Did you use Honda paint to their formulation? Can't see why you would want to take it away from original if not needed. Your choice though. I have a 1971 T250R in a similar position - low mileage and factory original...
Look on the bright side Sam...
Now you are a experienced professional at the painting of Honda CB750 Sandcast model fuel tanks, and not everyone can say that!!!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@markjohnson1224 Though Honda has published the names of their colors from this era, there is no official paint code that is recognized by modern paint manufacturers. After painting many bikes, I have learned that there is no substitute for an original sample and a pair of expert eyes. In other words, I always go to my paint supplier and work with him to find the most accurate color possible based on original, undamaged samples. The underside of the original tank had seen no daylight and had thus not faded at all. We were able to get a near-perfect match. One thing I advise against: the paint suppliers out there who claim to sell kits to match your paint. In my experience, they are rarely accurate. As far as this bike was concerned, the paint on the top of the tank, side covers, headlight bucket and fork ears were all badly faded. Repainting them was the only way to go.
@@ujeni77 What is it's current value?
@@raylawley I am not entertaining offers. It is a three-digit sandcast that was the first japanese bike to win Best of Show at the Quail this year...so it is something special :)
That is.. amazing! I was surprised this was not another café racer builds. So much nicer!
Unfortunately you completely skipped the "damage repair/rust removal part" I like most on builds :D
Spectacular! Most beautifull motorcicle ever built. Congratulations!
Absolutely incredible! "Motorcycle of the 20th Century" brought back from 'seen better days' to essentially new. I am currently shopping for one of these motorcycles.
you work very fast for sure
so badass awesome !
Love it. Back to stock/original. Great to hear it run.
Amazing resto! You know, you meet the nicest people on a Honda.
Jeez, stunning. just what mine needs.
I had a 70 model. I wish I were as good a mechanic as you. I almost killed myself back in the 70's on that thing. I don't ride anymore, just watch videos and remember.
Beautifully and lovingly restored. Would love to get one.
Outstanding job. You made look like we were back in 1969 and the bike just came out of the factory!
Magnificent! Thank you preserving this wonderful machine. Looks as good as it might have on the first day on the dealers show room floor.
The spokes would have taken me 457 hours.
I tried putting new spokes on a couple of rims once. Big mistake. Had to have a pro do it. It`s allot tougher than I thought
Brian Greenwood
😂 yeah, another level of craftsmanship huh?
Awesome work
@@jeeperscreatures - one at a time, extremely slow pace, and don't pick up speed until you're way past the level you're trying to speed away from. The pro only became the pro when he did enough of them and did it correctly. And you never know how "pro' the pro was until time lets you know, either way. Not what I would want to find out with only two wheels.
....that's funny shit !! hahah
Well done, Mister, you really know how to refurbish such a classic bike.
I had one of the 200 KOs Honda built for Daytona. Your resurrection brought tears to my eyes.
Wow! What happened to that bike? Glad you enjoyed the video :)
Fantastic job, only wish you'd made more videos on it, bit more details. Great job well done.
Wow!! the time mechine is restored for another 100 years
This is gonna be my favourite video ever congratulations from Greece
Wow what a great restoration of the bike...It gets a new life with time laps... Great job 👍👌🏍🏍🏍
You'll meet the nicest people on a Honda . = )
I watched this at .25 speed and it almost made sense then I watched it at 2X speed and the motorcycle caught on fire half way through it.
Perfect, its great to see people who can restore the complete bike themselves
I’m sitting here watching with a big smile, fantastic video.
Omg lot lot work , le you assembled a new bikei
What I would give to have ability to do this admirable feat of brining dead to life! Power of the gods!
Very nice to see this machine being restored with integrity. Inspiring work, and by the looks of it, within the means of any competent and diligent home-builder. An elegant video too. Somewhere, an electric bike designer is probably imagining causing a modern motorcycling earthquake with a radical machine that changes the world the way this one did, half a century ago.
Thanks and I hope we will have a landmark electric bike come along asap!
Awesome work, I'm glad you fired it up and rode it too, very nice.
