Yes and no. Yes it's surprising how many biological surprises we're uncovering. Yes it can tell you who your biological father is but it depends on those fathers testing (or their near kin).

My father is Algerian and my mother is South Korean (adopted). I'm trying to do some research into my paternal family and I'm having a hard time deciding which test to go for. The area/tribe where my family lives in Algeria is known locally for being from Mecca, present day Saudi Arabia and I'd like to find out if that's true. Now I've done a test from Myheritage a few years ago but that didn't seem very accurate, I'm thinking that if I do a Y-DNA test that would tell me where my ancestors came from though? Between 23andme's test and FamilyTreeDNA's Y-37 or Y-111, which one would you recommend for me?
I am curious to know if, when viewing One-to-Many at Gedmatch for my maternal male 1C, if I click on the Y does that mean those matches are DEFINITELY on his father's side and also might I see some surnames? OR does should I get him to take the Y-DNA test? I might have your Garnett-Lee situation happening with my illusive maternal 2nd g-grandfather in England (with only 184 descendants in 7 generations).
Hey Andy, I have done my both 23andme and FTDNA Y-111. 23andme has my haplo as r-z214 and and FTDNA predicted r-m269. Do you think would it be beneficial to take to big y-700 to confirm haplo group?
The Y-111 is an estimate of haplogroups because it is a STR test. Haplogroups are defined by SNPs not STRs. R-Z214 is further down the tree than R-M269. Big Y does test SNPs so it will likely give you a more accurate haplogroup than 23andMe.
So the big y will give you another haplogroup, I guess dig deeper right??
Q - My paternal 1/2 2nd cousin has a Y-DNA result of B-M181. This was done using a Y-DNA67 test. My result E-M2, was done (a few years ago) via Y-DNA37. Please tell me that if I "upgrade" with FTDNA to Y-DNA67 ($89 more bucks) [ when does the next "sale" start] (smile), might my "upgraded result" align with my 1/2 2nd cousin? I almost don't want to know, if the answer is NO. But I DO WANT TO KNOW. THANKS! (P.S. We share a paternal GGF *same man, "different" woman partners).
Honestly, I would rather you spend your money and energy building your family tree using autosomal DNA. I did a video about why 2 men in the same haplogroup aren't related. ruclips.net/video/OcgDYF_VcOA/видео.html
Which means, 2 men who are related might have a divergent yDNA as well. Or there might be something else going on. Thus, you'd be better off testing with Ancestry DNA and 23andMe (when they're on sale). Then transfer your DNA to MyHeritage, Living DNA (if you have English ancestors), and GEDmatch. Depending on where your genetic relatives have tested, you'll be able to see better answers.
I did my DNA test and it is April 2024. Where can I find the results of the yDNA & mtDNA? All the videos on RUclips I have seen only tell me what this information means. I can't find my resluts on my account. Where should I look?
FYI, to clear up confusion about the genetic Adam and Eves, it does not mean at one point there was 1 man alive, and at another point there was 1 woman alive.

Exactly. Also, the last common male ancestor (the so-called Adam) lived some 200,000 years ago, whereas the last common female ancestor (Eve) lived some 400,000 years ago, which tells you that humans of the past have heavily been polygamous; in fact, your have twice as many female ancestors as male ones... Sounds mind-bending, but it makes sense if you think about it...

I have a question... I'm a male. I think I understand the Y dna and maternal dna... so on my 23 and me it showed my paternal female 2cousin, as a 2 cousin. She is my dad's sister's grandaughter...so shouldnt that be impossible since.. my aunt doesnt have y dna, nor does her daughter, or my second cousin (aunt's granddaughter)? How'd it figure the match especially since it is a unbroken chain of father to son.
23 and Me provides an autosomal DNA test, not a Y-DNA test. They will test enough of your DNA to suggest a mtDNA haplogroup and a Y-DNA haplogroup (for male testers) but your matches will be from both your mother's and father's side.
Even though Y inheritance only accounts for 1/2, then 1/4, then 1/8 of our DNA, etc. Isn't that only mathematically? Genetically, wouldn't men share mare DNA with their fathers fathers father etc vs another ancestor of the same generation?

The paternal ancestor that males share the Y chromosome with would be more DNA with but only on the Y, not autosomal DNA.
Ok, let’s say hypothetically....your cousin sends you a random email about a distant cousin who is working on a family tree and that distant cousin is willing to pay for you to take a yDNA test if you share the results with them. You don’t know anything about this distant cousin and you think your family has the “typical” bones in their closet lol....would you take it?

I've only started to dip my toes into genealogy. Seeing a summer sale on Y-DNA testing, I came in search of information. I've already had my DNA done at AncestryDNA, which has provided untold hours of information gathering. So, I'm wondering if the Y-DNA test is worth $99. It's all so much to absorb. But, maybe I should do it for the benefit of my descendants, since it won't be possible when I'm dead. Wait, wait, wait, I don't have any descendants and never will, I'm almost 70 years old. Is this an utter waste of money for me?
While you won't have descendants, there are folks in your family tree who do have descendants and your DNA can help them. The question you have to ask yourself is, am I willing to spend $99 to create a record of my Y-DNA or is the Ancestry DNA test sufficient.
Also, I would recommend you transfer your DNA to MyHeritage, Family Tree DNA, Living DNA, and GEDmatch as this can come at a lesser cost and put your DNA in more databases that others might not know to do.
I got my results from 23andMe. I have a sister who's my full sibling. Although I knew that, 23andMe still let me know because we both had taken the test. On 23andMe, there's a section where you can ask a relative to connect with you and we can see each other profiles and comparisons. On one of our comparisons, it said that we both share the exact Y chromosome. Although I know we share the same father, how did my sister get a Y chromosome with me since she's a female? Don't females have 2 X chromosomes?🤔😬

When you link a close relative on your family tree and if your a female and confirm male relationship is brother or father it will put y haplo on female profiles
@@christopheralvarado5579 I think I get what you're saying. I'm a male. I confirmed my sister on 23andMe as my full sibling. Because we are full siblings, it automatically just gave y dna for information reasons.
Quick question - I have an unusual paternal haplogroup to my area. So I have J and my whole family history is in England. How can I find out why this is?
Maybe your results have to do with migration.
Italian Romans spread a subclade of J2 across their empire, and as you know Britain was controlled by the Romans for over 400 years. So it could be your direct paternal ancestor was some Roman person that happened to have the J2 haplogroup.
@@sykes2698 Also, the Romans were in the Near East and they took Syrian archers with them to England, according to a neighbor of mine.

It could mean that for your direct paternal line. But remember that's only one line of your genetics.
