    Sonic CD was developed in Japan while Sonic 2 was made around the same time but finished sooner by US-based STI. That's why CD doesn't go with the level design concepts and spin dash of 2 even though it came out after. It's another example of Sega of Japan and Sega of America not communicating well, but I like how it turned out. CD feels like a unique mix of the first two games with a cool time travel mechanic added in.

    9:29 the thing about the super peel out is that it lets you run at constant speed for more time than the spin dash, since you're not rolling, you won't slowly lose speed when going through flat ground or an upwards ramp (though there aren't a lot of moments like this in sonic cd so it is kinda useless)

    You're the first person I've ever heard say they prefer the JP soundtrack without having to say that the US one is bad. I appreciate that.
    As for the peelout, though, its benefit is that you can maintain speed with it whereas the spindash has a decaying speed rate over time, if you don't have downward slopes. That doesn't make it much more useful in a game where they focus on verticality though.

    I like how you brought up how completely pointless the Super Peel Out is.

    • @ShaimingLong
      @ShaimingLong 5 месяцев назад +87

      The Peel Out did have a point in the original. The actual classic games have a mechanic where you have much less air control when jumping while rolling - as in you can only slow down slightly at best when jumping while rolling.
      When you jump when running, you can fully stop your momentum and even turn around and start going the opposite direction.
      For a game about exploring, while difficult jumps to make, the Peel Out allows you to make high jumps off ramps and actually control yourself in the air.
      The old Drop Dash "bug" in Origins is actually this mechanic not being understood, and Sega had to go and specifically break it so people can change direction chaining drop dashes due to all the complaints.
      It's *that* which has made the Peel Out appear to be useless. It's original existence was super helpful.

    • @esmooth919
      @esmooth919 5 месяцев назад +23

      @@ShaimingLongbe that as it may, even in the original Sega CD version, i found the move superfluous. The only reason it was useful for me was because of the gimped spindash. If Sonic CD had the Sonic 2 spindash in the original version, the super peel-out would get neglected with the quickness.

    • @ShaimingLong
      @ShaimingLong 5 месяцев назад +45

      @@esmooth919 Again, that's not the point of the Peel Out vs the Spin Dash. It's not about the speed, it's about the control. The Sonic 2 Spin Dash doesn't have the air control when jumping from it.
      If you only look at it as a lamer version of the spin dash, then you're missing the point of it's existence.

      @AlexYardZone Thanks for taking the time to watch and react. Because I missed the actual stream, and because I'm not sure where else to comment, I'll just put my thoughts here.
      - I understand it might have been confusing that I said I played the game "3 times for this video", but I had played the game multiple times LONG before I made this. I'm no speedrunner, but I have plenty of experience with the game and by no means was I going into this as a new player.
      - Sure, many Sonic fans already know the background info, but I also make these videos with non-fans in mind so that anyone can enjoy them (including my friends/relatives who don't know the first thing about Sonic). And no offense, but you did keep skipping through sections where I did make commentary, especially in the presentation section, because you assumed that they were summaries when they weren't.
      - It drove me a little crazy that you kept pausing and commenting on what you perceived to be my critiques before hearing out the full thought in context.
      - You seemed to assume that my comment on levels potentially either being too speed-oriented or too compact, affecting the time travel, was a genuine problem I had and not just a hypothetical. The reason I'm making a point of this here is because you seemed to have an overall negative perception of the video because of that comment. It was meant to be a segue into the section where I talk about the actual level design, but I suppose I didn't communicate that very well. I rarely if ever had a problem with accidental time travel; I just wanted to bring up the possibility before examining the levels themselves.
      - And finally, no, I'm not trying to sound like KingK. This is just genuinely how I talk. That said, he, along with other YTers like Cybershell and Nerrel, did show me that someone with a naturally monotone voice doesn't have to try to play up fake inflections/emotions to make entertaining content. However, I don't make any attempt to copy their style, I just read the script out loud in my own voice. I've seen people bring up all kinds of people/characters that I apparently sound like (including Bob from Bob's Burgers lmao), but I promise it's just me.
      Apologies for the long comment. I hope this doesn't come across as too negative. I do sincerely appreciate that you took the time to critique my video, and hope you'll consider giving my future content a chance.
      Thanks again.

      @AlexYardZone 4 месяца назад +1

      @@spontman Thanks so very much for being such a good sport, it was very fun to discuss your video, even if I got prickly a couple of times lol. And yeah, sorry if I skipped some actual points of commentary beyond summary, maybe my rationalization for some skips is so that I didn’t too-heavily abuse fair use lol. But it’s not good if the video isn’t represented 100% authentically.
      And yeah, reacting in the moment is sometimes just spontaneous and that must have been frustrating if there were subsuquent points relevant to what I was responding to. Heck, I had a comment on the “25% of Sonic 3” video the other day that was like, “Omg, how can you say Sonic 3 is not exactly the most replayable game?” When that’s a first-section hypothesis that gets debunked throughout the entire video.
      As far as the summaries of game features and background info, I guess the main thing to point out is that if someone’s going to watch a video about Sonic CD that has 10,000 views, they’ve probably already watched a bunch of videos that have over 100,000 and outlined the basic facts at long length. As for simultaneously catering to friends and family, yeah, it’s a cost/benefit calculation when there are multiple total minutes of content explanations aimed only at

  • @ShaimingLong
    @ShaimingLong 5 месяцев назад +19

    Something that people seem to miss about the classic games, jumping while rolling greatly reduces your air control. For a game focused on exploration, being able to do the peel out into a jump on a ramp lets you better control where you're going. *That* is the purpose for the peel out, not higher speed for higher vulnerability, because it's obvious you can peel out straight into a roll.
    The Origins drop dash 'bug' is a result of that reduced air control when jumping while rolling. Specifically, you can't stop your forward momentum or change direction when jumping from a roll, only slow down. If you jump while *running* right, you can stop moving forward while jumping and even start moving left.
    People whined about it so much, Sega had to break a core classic gameplay element to satisfy their inability to figure that difference in jumping, in doing so made the peel out pointless. So in the current Origins jumping from a roll is no different to jumping while running, all so people can change the drop dash direction.

    It's also worth noting that some of the reason for this game feeling so different from Sonic 2 is that Sonic Team split up after the first game. Half of them went to the Sega Technical Institute in America, and they made Sonic 2, while the ones that stayed in Japan made Sonic CD. That's why there are two speed-boosting moves and why the spindash is different -- Sonic CD copied it from 2.

    Really its like the community flipped; prior to about 2015 or so it was a beloved game that was constantly ranked among the best games, then scottthewoz made a video on it and opinions kind of shifted. I will always be on the side that loves this game.

    I disagree with the idea that the game was obscure prior to the Whitehead port; it was popular among fans long before then. Sonic Gems Collection sold over 1 million copies and became part of the Gamecube's Player's Choice collection. And a PC port from 1996 that wasn't mentioned was how I first discovered the game.
    Great video though. Sonic CD is overall greater than the sum of its parts.

    As someone who prefers the Japanese soundtrack, its refreshing to see someone not completely shit on the US soundtrack in the process. I feel like many JP fans have this superiority conplex that because the US is different that its automatically bad. Like I guarantee you most of these people haven't listened to anything except Sonic Boom and the creepy boss music.
    Some US tracks I would argue are better than their Japan counterparts. For example, Tidal Tempest Bad Future. I like both, but the US version feels more fitting for the level whereas the Japanese version sounds nothing like its other variants and sounds more fortress-esque.
    As for getting the good ending, you mentioned the level design is why you don't go for special stages, but its actually why I do personally. I feel like looking for generators can be very tedious, especially considering some of their bs placements, like that one where you need to deliberately crush yourself (like seriously sega wtf). For me its easier to collect the time stones like in any traditional Sonic game.

  • @Nonamearisto
    @Nonamearisto 5 месяцев назад +2

    CD was clearly an attempt to make a more mature game without alienating the existing fanbase. The present, past, and good future are a robot rumpus, but the bad future is a robot holocaust.

  • @thekillernacho
    @thekillernacho 4 месяца назад

    My main gripe about its design is how the gameplay loop treats the Bad Future as an obstacle to only be interacted with when making a mistake, despite those variants often being the most interesting ones gameplay-wise (in addition to their soundtrack variants). As I got better with the game and learned its levels, I found I wasn't entering them much at all... which seemed like a shame. I almost feel like Bad Future should've been the initial state of each stage just to ensure the player can explore & experience each variant (although I get how needing to find two signposts to eliminate a generator could get tedious).

    I'm glad I was introduced to your channel with this video. It showed up in my recommendations and this was really well made. The first time I was ever aware of Sonic CD it was when I played Sonic Mega collection on the GameCube back in like 2003 or something. In the archives of the game menus or whatever you can find cutscenes from Sonic CD and some other information about it.
    This is coming from somebody who grew up in the '90s and actually played the classic Sonic games for the Genesis. I was actually more into Super Nintendo than Genesis but I liked playing both consoles. Same thing when it comes to the N64 I preferred the N64 but I did enjoy playing both the N64 and the PS1. I was aware of the Sega Saturn back then but it seemed like it was kind of short-lived and my family never got one.
    I do wish I had gotten Sonic gems collection for the GameCube. I remember seeing it at GameStop once I forget how far back this was but I saw it there some time ago and I didn't bother to get it. I was curious but I ultimately decide to save my money and I never saw it again. It's not like I would have been broke if I actually bought it right then and there but I just was being conservative with my spending and decided not to get it. I sort of regretted that until recently.
    I forget when but years ago I did play Sonic CD for the first time by downloading some kind of demo to my phone. This was even before Sonic mania came out. But when I finally ultimately played through Sonic CD from beginning to end That was after I got Sonic Origins plus on my switch and okay well I didn't really exactly play through it the original way I played as knuckles.😂 But hey I was basically going by what the accomplishment said I needed to do in order to unlock a poster. Play as Amy and Sonic 1 and play as knuckles in Sonic CD.😂
    Sonic CD was a fun game. I mean I have a lot more experience with the other classic Sonic games and even have a lot more experience with Sonic mania but yes Sonic CD was fun my first time playing through the whole thing

I used to collect the Sega CD games when they were on the PC. Sonic CD was something that was really cool to see on store displays. Mostly because of the replayability it has, I love the time travel, and different level themes, I love the special stages, I love the music and just all the ideas it brings to the table, it is a shame that there was never a true follow up to it…however I disagree on the super peel out being useless, it just has a lot of limitations compared to the spin dash and actually looks really freaking sic!

      Irony in it having limitations when Sonic becomes harder to control while rolling. I think the "problem" with the Super Peel Out is that people find it too similar to the spin dash that it makes any of the differences it has irrelevant. The more I think about it, the Peel Out is more of a preference than it is "useless."

      @@Doobie-kx8fk yeah I can agree with that but I think it being similar to the spin dash was almost the point, where it could be a risk vs reward system kinda thing…however that is kinda downed by the fact that you can roll into a ball after using the super peel out to protect yourself so you gotta point there, still looks cool tho.

For example, I would've had just the present and past be the 1st act with the present being more Sonic 2 in gameplay style and the past be the exploration part of the game with the futures being the whole 2nd act you must go through with the bad future being a speed platform hellscape while the opposite being gimmicky with your speed and platforming

  • @AkumaAPN
    @AkumaAPN 4 месяца назад

    Well, the first semicolon was supposed to be a regular colon. You use a colon when you're about to start a list, even if it's only two items. You're supposed to use a semicolon when you're linking two related sentences together -- but each should be a complete sentence.
    If you're going to tack on a clarification, a double dash (or parentheses) is the way to go.
    So technically, that long sentence should have had zero senicolons with that particular choice of wording.
    In this case, I'd have done colon + parentheses. Colon plus colon to suggest a list within a list feels dubious.

    CD is peak fiction.
    Classic Hero's Journey
    Exceptional music so much so that the soundtrack feels like a living breathing part of the environment which also feels alive. The entire gameplay experience is cinematic.
    Which make the game a JOY to explore. I dont mind wasting time or missing a corner, because Im on the stage that is any given level. The music, robots, animals, plants all watching and singing to me.
    And while the Super Peel-Out is often seen as redundant or pointless, it's just cool. Which, is what makes Sonic so iconic. A "useless" move that makes Sonic cooler for the sake of aura. Yeah that sounds like Sonic to me.

    And that's funny to say now that we have an entire Sonic movie series, but man. It would've been
    absolute magic if Howard Drossin scored them, cus yeah. He's doing film scores after retiring from VGM

    As a "move", the super peel out *is* kind of pointless, yeah. But the animation itself existing for when Sonic's going hell for leather, a sort of "top gear" animation? That's a great idea that I wish was in the other classic games.
    And on the note of the difference between the peelout/spindash in CD vs 2/3, I honestly really prefer the way CD handles it. Sure, it feels worse in basically every regard, but that's the point: You're not supposed to be relying on it. You're supposed to learn the flow of a level, learn its ins and outs, and eventually be good enough to be able to maintain speed and momentum without having to come to a halt and wait for the spindash to get you back up to speed. It's low key brilliant - but that point sailed over almost everyone's heads.

The level design doesn't flow nearly as well as the Genesis Sonics, and the time travel mechanic makes it feel even more clunky. I imagine this would have been even worse on the Sega CD as the loading times would have been longer. Time travel, with alternate acts could have been cool, but it should have been implemented in a way that doesn't disrupt the flow. I'm thinking of the season transitions in Mushroom Hill from S&K, which were totally seamless.
