Maybe if the lineup that was supposed to mash had done their jobs it wouldn't have gotten to that point. But let's blame Buck for not having a bullpen to compete with.
1:15 - What Buck is trying to say is if any portion of the baseball hits the side of the fair pole that faces foul territory, it's still a fair ball home run. A baseball is 74 mm (2.91") in diameter, so this rare situation requires less than 1" of the ball to hover over fair territory.
Honestly, though, as an Orioles fan, it didn't matter. They weren't winning that game. If Britton pitched the 10th, they just would've lost in the 11th. If he pitched 2 innings, they would've lost in the 12th. Better to just rip off the Band-Aid and get it over with.
I would like to see the first one just to see it for myself if he was getting stuff wrong since I usually check the rules and if it involves specific parks then I check their ground rules since it’s always good to know that ground rules could be different in various parks
He did not get all of them right. He was wrong about having to come out of the dugout to throw the ball. Once a fielder makes a catch and enters dead ball territory (the dugout), the ball is dead and all runners are awarded one base. Nothing else can happen.
Learned a great baseball insight from Buck years ago when he was calling games for ESPN: the first pitch on a 3-2 count has the highest rate of foul balls of any pitch thrown. Now that you know, watch for it.
Thank you Buck for discussing the rules with your players. In my 40 years as an umpire at all levels, even the best most successful coaches do not know the rules. It might be just the edge you need in a close game to pull out a win IF you know the rules?
Runners on first and second, hit and run with the runners not really paying attention, pop up around second base, Infield Fly (batter is out) runner from first passes the runner on second (Runner from first is out), ball lands on runner from second (that runner is out).

Man itd be hilarious if someone threw schowalter a beer during this segment, shotgunned the beer, then threw it at the camera man and told the camera man to ‘f off’ along with other profanity. Man I hope that happens one day.
If the catcher is between you and home plate, and leaves you no path to reach home plate, you are free to run the catcher over. The rules are different now, the catcher can only block the plate if they have the ball, or trying to field the ball. The catcher and runner must make a good faith attempt to avoid a collision. If the runner crashes into the catcher on purpose, the runner is ruled out.
the baserunner has the right of way to run in a straight line to the next base. If a fielder is standing in the way, the runner is free to run them over. If the fielder has the ball and is attempting to tag you, you are free to slide into them to avoid the tag. There is no rule that says you must come to a complete stop and let the fielder tag you easily standing up
Yep, I definitely branded Machado as a dingleberry when it comes to sliding into other players. Sadly, I hope someone as dirty as him slides into him. 🥲
Crazy rules like how it's acceptable to make the umps finger the opposing pitcher's ears when you're down six in the desperate hopes it'll get in his head? That kind of crazy rule?
Correct. Once a fielder catches the ball and enters dead ball territory, the ball is dead, all runners advance 90 feet. The fielder CANNOT reenter live ball territory and make a play. Buck was wrong on that one.
I don't believe that is the rule. It may have been at one time because I remember hearing it many years ago. Once a player makes a catch and enters dead ball territory, the ball is dead and remains dead. All runners get one base.

I’ve always wondered why they don’t use a square ball. That would make the game so much better. A football-shaped ball would be cool too. Ground balls would be interesting.
Well, that's two of these videos and two rulings he's gotten wrong. The answer to this one was in the same place as the other one too (6.01 b). Straight from the MLB rule book under "Fielder Right of Way": The players, coaches or any member of a team at bat shall vacate any space (including both dugouts or bullpens) needed by a fielder who is attempting to field a batted or thrown ball. If a member of the team at bat (other than a runner) hinders a fielder’s attempt to catch or field a batted ball, the ball is dead, the batter is declared out and all runners return to the bases occupied at the time of the pitch.
Read the rule again, because you're wrong. "a fielder who is attempting to field a batted or thrown ball" He was doing neither. He had already fielded it and was attempting to tag the runner.
@@Subangelis Try paying attention to the whole video. 1:55 starts a whole section about a foul ball toward the dugout. And at 2:40 he goes specifically into how he'd tell his players to make sure they stay on the rail and make it more difficult for the fielder trying to catch the ball at the dugout.
He also got the rule wrong about leaving your feet near the dugout: There are two rules involved, one regarding where you can legally make a catch, and one involving the advancement of the runners. [From the 2019 Official Baseball Rules: "Rule 5.09(a)(1) Comment: A fielder may reach into, but not step into, a dugout to make a catch, and if he holds the ball, the catch shall be allowed. A fielder, in order to make a catch on a foul ball nearing a dugout or other out-of-play area (such as the stands), must have one or both feet on or over the playing surface (including the lip of the dugout) and neither foot on the ground inside the dugout or in any other out-of-play area. Ball is in play, unless the fielder, after making a legal catch, steps or falls into a dugout or other out-of-play area, in which case the ball is dead. Status of runners shall be as described in Rule 5.06(b)(3)(C) Comment." We have also from Rule 5.09(a)(1) that "[i]f a fielder, attempting a catch at the edge of the dugout, is 'held up' and kept from an apparent fall by a player or players of either team and the catch is made, it shall be allowed." That makes clear that being held up at the dugout fence (and not falling) is not the same as a fall. "Rule 5.06(b)(3)(C) Comment: If a fielder, after having made a legal catch, should step or fall into any out-of-play area, the ball is dead and each runner shall advance one base, without liability to be put out, from his last legally touched base at the time the fielder entered such out-of-play area." So you can leave your feet and not have the runners advance, as long as you don't step or literally fall into the dugout. And being held up to prevent a fall does not mean that you fell.
he's wrong, you can "leave your feet" to make a catch in the dugout, and its legal, you cannot make a catch with any part of your body or feet touching inside the dugout (out of play area)
The leave your feet rule is old and doesn’t exist anymore. Once you are out of play it’s a free base even if you stay up. Also yes machado was dirty and illegal in that play. The rules state the runner has to actively avoid the fielder. Also purposefully sliding into a player to break up a play is illegal.
That infield fly call was correct. You don't know the rule so don't try to tell us an infield fly cannot be caught in the outfield. You are totally wrong.
If it is judged that an infielder could catch the ball with ordinary effort it would be an infield fly even if he caught it on the warning track in dead centerfield.
Buck is wrong a couple of times. A fielder that falls into the dugout after making a catch cannot come out to make a play. The ball is immediately dead. When two runners occupy a base, it is not always the runner who originally had possession of the base. Buck is not the rules expert he thinks he is.

Even if that play was “legal” Machado is still a dirty player that ended Pedroia’s career. He’s the new A-Rod (except I actually kind of like A-Rod now that he’s no longer a Yankee)

Status of runners shall be as described in Rule 5.06(b)(3)(C) Comment."
We have also from Rule 5.09(a)(1) that "[i]f a fielder, attempting a catch at the edge of the dugout, is
'held up' and kept from an apparent fall by a player or players of either team and the catch is made, it shall be allowed." That makes clear that being held up at the dugout fence (and not falling) is not the same as a fall.
